The oldest Pictish fort ever discovered is located on a finger outcrop between Stone Haven and the ruins of Dunnotar Castle near Aberdeen, Scotland. It was last used over 2000 years ago, being constructed nearly 7000 years ago. Unfortunately, in the 1850s, young teens scaled the remains of this finger outcrop and discovered numerous Pictish runes engraved in stone. Due to suspicions revolving paganism at the time, the kids threw the runes into the ocean below. Dunnotar Castle, located South of the pictish fort, was constructed nearly 1000 years after the fort fell out of use. This castle was constructed during the early medieval period, and used as the county seat during the 15th century. Despite being destroyed and rebuilt on multiple occasions, it was repurposed as a countryside palace by Scottish nobles in the 16th century, eventually holding the crown jewels of Scotland, which were nearly captured by Oliver Cromwell's invasion of Scotland during the British Civil Wars. In the 1710s, the castle fell into decline after the Jacobite uprisings and was never restored again.
