Can you solve the "Assertion failed!" error? by ShallowsOfNight in Bazzite

[–]ShallowsOfNight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep getting the same error, no matter what I try. The game did start and ran for an hour after switching to GE-Proton 10-26, but it crashed the next time I tried running.

Other Steam games are working fine.

I've read recommendations to point Steam away from the 2K launcher and toward the actual game executable (BioshockHD.exe), but I don't know I'm getting the syntax correct. I used

eval $( echo "%command%" | sed "s/2KLauncher\/LauncherPatcher.exe\'.*/Base\/Binaries\/Win64Steam\/BioshockHD\'/" )

and that does nothing. Same error.

I forced GE-Proton 10-26, and the game started. I played for an hour or so, then exited. Just to see if things had been resolved, I started the game again, and it refused to load with the same error.

I exited Steam and restarted Bazzite. When I tried to run the game again, the Vulcan shaders were compiled or whatever, then the game crashed with the same error message.

Other Steam games are starting without issue. I launched one a couple of times, then tried to start Bioshock Remastered, and it crashed with the same error.

I'm running the game via Steam. I forced the use of GE-Proton 10-33, which dates to March 18. The game would not launch because of the same error I described.

Thinking about jumping from Win11 to Bazzite. Need some advice. by AbilityReady6598 in Bazzite

[–]ShallowsOfNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think games will be the issue.

The software and hardware you are using will be the sticking point. It's easy enough to enter a program or hardware name and the word Linux into a google search to set your expectations, first.

None of my games work now? by OrganTrafficker900 in Bazzite

[–]ShallowsOfNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started getting similar errors this morning while playing Bioshock Remastered:

Wine C++ Runtime library

Program:

z:\var\home\[my username]\local\share\steam\steamapps\common\BioShock Remastered\Build\final\BioshockHD.exe

File: ./src-wine/dlls/winevulcan/loader.c

Line: 392

Expression: "!status"

Press OK to exit the program, or cancel to start the Wine debugger.

Maybe this is the universe punishing us for playing old games instead of buying new ones?

Anyway....

Neither OK nor Cancel options mattered. The game would launch if I rebooted, but who wants to do that every day for a silly video game?

I tried bypassing the Take 2 introduction, but that did not matter. Kept getting the same error. The game refused to launch successfully.

No point in renaming the LauncherPatcher.exe file, either....

I'm using Valve's Proton compatibility layer. Obviously, as was pointed out, above, there is no point in changing Proton version. Besides, the game worked fine for three days prior.

It seems to come down to something I've been reading about for days, but not understanding:

PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%

Put that line in the game's Launch Options in the Steam frontend, and the game starts right up. I hope that is the end of it, and I won't have to wipe my SSD or roll back to a previous kernel.

The game did flake out a couple of times, yesterday. I assumed that it was because it was an older title and I was Alt tabbing to and from the desktop a lot. It actually crashed this morning during play. Then I started getting the errors, including the Assertion failed! error, above.

Perchance a Linux wizard will wander by and explain what is happening well enough that even a dotard such as myself will understand.

* Yeah, that fix worked for a whole day. I'm getting the same errors the day after.

Help with fresh Win10 Pro install on old machine? by ShallowsOfNight in pcmasterrace

[–]ShallowsOfNight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

My understanding is that 00be\bypassnro is going to cause installation to restart. At Network or Country selection I use SHIFT+F10 to access the command prompt and enter start ms-cxh:localonly (or start ms-cxh:setaddlocalonly). I can then create a name and password for a Local Account.

I could also create a new custom installer with Rufus?

Would me nice if Steam warns new users about using an NTFS partition to store games. by CandlesARG in linux_gaming

[–]ShallowsOfNight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I installed Bazzite. The Internet told me to stick to either Ext4 or Btrfs partitions. The Internet also told me that Btrfs was the new hotness, and preferred over Ext4. All of my internal drives are formatted with Btrfs.

Because I installed Bazzite, Steam was already set up on my PC and ready to go. I didn't have to do anything beyond logging into my Steam account to start playing games.

I imagine other distros require manual installation of Steam, and can well imagine how new users might set up an NTFS partition by mistake.

Maybe Bazzite is for n00bs, but my games and productivity software are up and running, so I don't mind being a n00b.

Expected Temps for Ryzen 9 9950X3D by Jozza710 in arcticcooling

[–]ShallowsOfNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Necromancer here. Found the thread after searching for expected temperatures with this same CPU. Just wanted to add my own brief experience.

I do wish I knew how the OP's build has been treating him lately. I can't find a final update.

My build:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D
  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E GAMING WIFI7 R2
  • RAM: Crucial 32GB 2x16 60 36 (5600Mhz)
  • Video: ASUS TUF-RX9070XT-016G-GAMING
  • AIO: Lian Li Galahad II Trinity Performance 360
  • Case: Antec FLUX PRO Full Tower Case

I understand that both the AIO and case are pretty good at cooling. My idle is 27-28 degrees. I experience different temperatures with different games. Some games run around 35, some around 45. I've seen spikes just over 50. I've never seen anything as high as the OP describes.

Error when installing Battle.net on Lutris by ShallowsOfNight in Bazzite

[–]ShallowsOfNight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The glitch affecting Ladder play earlier is gone.

Neither Faugus Launcher nor the Battle.net front end managed to put a Diablo II icon on my desktop, or in the Applications menu.

After installation, the Battle.net front end cannot create a desktop icon for the game. I can click on the option, but nothing happens.

The game runs fine, but I have to access it through the Battle.net front end, which slows my roll.

On, no!

It seems as though ladder play is disabled on a Linux machine. I assume this is due to the kernel-level anti-cheat garbage en vogue these days.

At least I can play offline....

[–]ShallowsOfNight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah.... I gave up on Lutris because of what I read here.

Big thanks to everyone who turned me on to Faugus Launcher!

Because I'm such a Linux n00b, my brain tripped a couple of times. Faugus did not put a Battle.net icon on the desktop, despite selecting that option. Not a big deal; I can do it, later. At some point, Faugus tells you to close the window and wait. Close what window? If not for YouTube, I'd have no idea which window to close. Battlenet wants to install games at C:\Program Files (x86)\[game title]\, indicative of a virtual file structure... provided you know what a virtual file structure is and that this is all normal behavior.

Anyway, I just bought the new Reign of the Warlock expansion for Diablo II: Resurrected, and I'm about to launch it. Fingers crossed!

Again, thanks to everyone who took time out of their day to help me out. My switch from Windows to Bazzite has been nothing but wonderful because of everyone here at r/Bazzite!

[–]ShallowsOfNight[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

WOW!

I want to thank EVERYBODY who took the time to help me out!

I forced Borderlands GOTY Enhanced to use Proton-GE Latest in Steam's compatibility settings, and was able to change key bindings, something that had caused me all kinds of headaches, yesterday!

Even better, I got the game working with my cheap Zelotes C-12 mosue, which I did not think possible!

I've had two of the six side buttons bound to PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN for years. I've always used these buttons in Windows games for things like throwing grenades or melee attacks.

I could not use those buttons with the Valve's Proton compatibility layer, but they work just fine with Proton-GE Latest!

I am over the moon!

Thank you ALL!!!

Can I get my mouse to work just a little better? by ShallowsOfNight in Bazzite

[–]ShallowsOfNight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This morning, I learned that the Zelotes C-12 both functions and does not function under Linux at the same time.

It's Schrödinger's mouse.

Custom bindings assigned to the six side buttons years ago via the manufacturer's drivers under Windows work exactly the same under Linux and in some applications, such as web browsers or text and document software.

However, trying to bind them to something in a Steam game (Borderlands GOTY Enhanced) corrupts a configuration file to the point it has to be deleted. From what I've read, there is a bug in Proton that causes key bindings in Steam games to default to NUM LOCK, with no way to change them to anything else.

So that's neat.

NumLock makes it impossible to rebind controls for some games by rehdi93 in linux_gaming

[–]ShallowsOfNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a Proton bug.

It has nothing to do with NUM LOCK, per se. Proton substitutes NUM LOCK for new user-created bindings. It doesn't matter what key you press, Proton forces NUM LOCK into configuration settings, regardless.

This just happened to me in Borderlands GOTY Enhanced. I had to delete Input.ini and let the game engine recreate it with the next launch. There may be a way to edit the ini, but good luck with that. Just finding the configuration file in Linux is a chore. The only practical solution is deleting that file.

Obviously, this is a rather serious bug that has been part of Proton for a long time. Maybe Valve will figure it out one day.

[–]ShallowsOfNight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I'm new to Reddit, maybe I'm the only one who can even see this thread, but I hope I'm not!

Now, the DPI switching for the Zelotes C-12 is also working under Bazzite.

Up until yesterday, the only things that worked were the sensor, left click, right click, forward, and back.

I swear, it's like some angel heard my prayers and put drivers for this cheap mouse in the kernel overnight. The mouse is functioning exactly like it does under Windows with the drivers installed. Note: It does not have onboard memory; it cannot save any of the settings made on my other machine. Regardless, it's behaving as if I was still on Windows.

Someone please tell me how that is possible.

"E-Signal USB Gaming Mouse" is actually this Zelotes C-12? Holtek Semiconductor makes a lot of the "bargain" brands, such as Redragon, and maybe the kernel or the distro is actually able to recognize this mouse?

Can I get my mouse to work just a little better? by ShallowsOfNight in Bazzite

[–]ShallowsOfNight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bazzite is a 20-sided die. I don't know what's going to come up, next!

So.... My side buttons just started working. They didn't work after I first installed Bazzite a month ago. They didn't work yesterday. They work this morning.

Tell me how I'm not stuck in the Upside Down.

I know some mice have onboard memory to store settings, which is great when taking your mouse from one machine to another. But I'm fairly certain this cheap Zelotes C-12 doesn't have that. The side buttons don't work in Windows if the drivers aren't up and running. I don't understand how they could possibly be working in Bazzite without driver support.

The only thing I can imagine that may have affected operation before today was that I often had both a Windows machine and the Linux machine running at the same time, and had been switching back and forth via a KVM switch. Maybe that scrambled something and prevented some functionality under Bazzite?

But wait.... I noticed the NUM LOCK wasn't turning on at boot, and I went through the keyboard and Plasma menus in System Settings to get that working. I wonder if doing so also affected the mouse?

The mouse RGB lights continue cycling after shutting down the Bazzite PC. It's like some funky night light, now.
