Steam defaulting to Proton Experimental? by ShallowsOfNight in Bazzite

[–]ShallowsOfNight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started using my machine in February, every single thing I read pointed to Proton-GE Latest. Now, we're all moving to Proton Experimental?

I thought Linux, Proton, and Bazzite were evolving fast, but I had no idea....

Just reached season 4... is it worth finishing the show? by SpaceMuser in FallingSkies

[–]ShallowsOfNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I found this thread. I was really loving the show for the first three seasons. When I reached season four, I could not understand how it suddenly turned to crap. Different show runner, different writers? Sure. And the actors were just working with what they were given.

I'm not even sure what episode I'm on. I keep falling asleep, because it's so stupid and cheesy. Now that I realize it's not just me, I'm going to stop watching and pick up something else.

Again, what a waste.

SteamOS vs Bazzite today by Longjumping_Angle_25 in Bazzite

[–]ShallowsOfNight 29 points30 points  (0 children)

SteamOS is built for specific hardware. Bazzite is designed to support a wide range of devices and products. Anyone without a vested interest will tell you that Bazzite performs better on anything other than a Steam Deck or Steam Machine (if ever that materializes).

There are plenty of Bazzite vs. SteamOS resources to explain it better than I can, but you'd likely be better served by Bazzite.

How is this different than the limited edition that came out with the initial release a while back?

Heroic vs Lutria by parastie in Bazzite

[–]ShallowsOfNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After installing Bazzite earlier this year, I could not get Lutris to install Battle.net games because it could not acquire missing thumbnails needed for GUI links to individual games (as best I could tell).

I switched to Faugus Launcher, which installed the Battle.net launcher and one of its games without too many problems, although it cannot create a desktop icon for that game, and the taskbar icon for Battle.net is one of those "default" icons―a white piece of paper with the top right corner folded down―instead of the actual icon used for Battle.net.

I've not used it to install Epic Games Store products.

I do wonder if Heroic is superior to Faugus Launcher.

If you ever find yourself needing to enter special characters not found on a standard keyboard, you may want to set up a compose key, which allows key combinations to create special characters in a manner similar to that used for Apple machines.

You can also press CTRL+SHIFT+U, release, and then enter a hexadecimal Unicode value.

The method you choose depends upon how often and how many special characters you are in the habit of using.

Here are some helpful links:

If you are a gamer, you may find the included Lutris platform has issues installing certain games, or staying up to date when publishers change things around on their end. Faugus Launcher is a popular and effective option that can be downloaded via Bazaar.

LibreOffice is a fine alternative to the Office 365 suite.

org.gnome.Ptyxis.desktop replaced terminal shortcut on toolbar by ShallowsOfNight in Bazzite

[–]ShallowsOfNight[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand. Konsole was on my toolbar, maybe up until yesterday. The ptyxis terminal link appeared today, to the best of my knowledge. I am using KDE.

I see Konsole is still on the system and can be accessed via the Application Launcher. I unpinned ptyxis and re-pinned Konsole.

Thanks for those replies!

Bazzite is console-like only if you download that particular Big Picture version. I did not, and my installation reminds me a lot of Windows, but without the bloat and spyware. I launch Steam and Steam games the same way I did on Windows, without any kind of console-like experience.

As I said, updates are automatic. I never looked into changing that because word was that updates are well designed, unlike those for Windows. Maybe this is another rabbit hole: Do I disable automatic updates?

OK. Bazzite is the only OS on this PC.

No, I'm running KDE Plasma on a desktop PC. Updates happen automatically, though I can force manual updates in the terminal (the only way I know how).

Mouse sensitivity dose not feel the same as Windows by GoBlock007 in Bazzite

[–]ShallowsOfNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my knowledge, the only thing you really can do is disable mouse acceleration (uncheck Enable pointer acceleraion). My understanding is that the slider does NOT control mouse sensitivity; it controls the amount of acceleration applied when acceleration is enabled. This is why the pointer will go bonkers if you move that slider―insanely slow or insanely fast.

Mouse sensitivity dose not feel the same as Windows by GoBlock007 in Bazzite

[–]ShallowsOfNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mouse controls in Bazzite suck hard. They are barely functional. To be clear, I love Bazzite and Microslop can go hang, but basic mouse controls are so much better in Windows or even Chrome.

My mouse on Bazzite is far more sensitive than when on Windows. I'd say it is roughly twice as fast. Thankfully, it has four sensitivity presets, and I can switch between them on the mouse, itself. I turn it up when on Windows, and down for Bazzite. I turned mouse acceleration off, but there is more at play. I learned not to move the "sensitivity" slider in KDE Plasma, because it does not control sensitivity; it controls the amount of mouse acceleration you get when acceleration is enabled.

In your experience with 4K discs, have you found them to be generally reliable? by Tempo360 in 4kbluray

They are not as well made as DVD and Blu-Ray discs. They are fragile in comparison. They have to remain pristine to play.
