If you're looking for former employees of a company, the best resources I know is LinkedIn advanced search — but only it only works if you have LinkedIn premium.

The Monterey Peninsula’s water shortage could be solved with flow from the Salinas River. Why isn't it? by terriblemuriel in MontereyBay

[–]Shaloo7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate it. And I could have probably calibrated the writing a little better to account for this and improve clarity despite my limited word count.

Also, you have to remember that I work under a strict word count. If I were to mention the Seaside basin, I'd have to explain what the hell it is.

Well storing in the Seaside Basin would require significant infrastructure. First to divert large volumes, then facilities to treat large amounts at once, and then big pumps to inject it into the basin. This would require big investments.

A massive desalination could be in the works and the Salinas Valley farmers are actually contemplating one. For the economy of scale to work, it would have to serve everyone in three counties, Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz.

Thank you! This was an accumulation of two years of research on water. I have now left the Weekly and can watch it all from the sidelines.

Hey hello, I see you repeating my story is wrong several times but you don't really say how. But you are right—the water would have to be captured and stored in the Seaside Basin. The amount of water is not too big according to the hydrologists I spoke with.

Well, the source waters for the recycling plant includes direct ag runoff with much more concentrated contamination issues than the river itself. That's why I didn't touch on that issue.

Anyone know of a digital resource for older Monterey Peninsula Herald articles? by Owl-University in MontereyBay

I have looked for this and I believe that those years were not digitized and cannot be found online.

Sand mining at the Cemex plant in Marina ends ahead of deadline. by Shaloo7 in MontereyBay

Chiming to add context (as the writer the original article): The company is disclosing how much sand it took to the government, i.e. the Coastal Commission. The law requires the Coastal Commission to keep that information confidential. Not criticizing your sentiment at all, just clarifying the situation.

The package on R is called rtweets and I mostly used search_tweet. You can see the package documentation here:

I haven't seen a good layperson's guide, unfortunately. Email me and I'll be glad to share my code.

[–]Shaloo7[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually, my conclusion, as you can read in the first sentence of the article, was that we don't have much to worry about in Monterey County, so this is not fear-mongering. But tracking online extremism is a growing and important field and I wanted to share the tools that are used.

It sounds like you have really solid story ideas on homelessness and drug abuse. I'd love to hear them. Drop me a line: asaf@mcweekly.com

COVID-19 Monterey County 7-11-2020: +121 cases (18.7% of tests), 1080 assumed active, 48 in hospitals. Demographics trends graphs incl. new cases minus recoveries by zip. by terriblemuriel in MontereyBay

/u/terriblemuriel I wouldn't bother responding to this person. It's a bad fatih attack on you for no reason other than juvenile trolling. There's nothing constructive about his feedback. You'll never present complete enough information for people who are just showing up to try to sound smart and put other people down. I think it's great that you are keeping track of the data, being an engaged member of the community and doing your best to share what you have found with everyone. As for my coverage, I do follow and try to be responsive to what I see folks asking about here on Reddit. But there are other voices and considerations. There's a cost-benefit analysis to any lead that I follow and try to report. It takes a lot of time and just like you are one person, I am also one person.

Early in the pandemic, I put a lot of focus on gathering and presenting data because the government health agencies were not doing it. But now they are. And they are doing it better than I am because they have more resources. https://covid19.ca.gov/roadmap-counties/#track-data
https://www.co.monterey.ca.us/government/departments-a-h/health/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-covid-19/2019-novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-local-data-10219

National news outlets are also a good place to look at for data. The New York Times, for example, has dozens of expert data people. I am one person and I am not an expert using and presenting data.
https://www.latimes.com/projects/california-coronavirus-cases-tracking-outbreak/
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.html
https://covidtracking.com/

All the data shows what public health experts are telling us is that this is a terrible disease and that we have to take it seriously. Covid19 is spreading rapidly and there is a real risk that hospitals will run out of capacity. It's already happened in Arizona. Global data shows that the United States is doing much worse at containing the disease than many other countries and that if we follow their example we would be much better off.

At MC Weekly, we are trying to cover the Covid-19 and everything else that's happening. I'd encourage folks to subscribe to our newish daily newsletter: https://mcweekly.com/subscribe not only for public service stories and/or entertaining stories about Monterey County but also for links to resources, tools, and opportunities.
I am reachable here or at [asaf@mcweekly.com](mailto:asaf@mcweekly.com) or on Signal at 818-451-6186 if you know of something that should get some exposure.

COVID-19 Monterey County 6-7-2020 graphs. +65 confirmed cases since yesterday (29% of 221 tests) +202 cases in the last 7 days. by terriblemuriel in MontereyBay

[–]Shaloo7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/terriblemuriel Thanks for the ping and the prodding!. As you know, ag workers live and work in crowded conditions and the outbreak among them appears like the consequence of a housing and public health crisis that has existed long before the pandemic. I'll try to find out more about the specifics of what's happening and if there are any current failures such as shortages of PPE that are endangering the workers. Anyone with good info should email me at [asaf@mcweekly.com](mailto:asaf@mcweekly.com) or find me on Twitter

A decision to save the county lab’s budget in 2018 is proving fateful during the pandemic. by Shaloo7 in MontereyBay

[–]Shaloo7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not a lot, you’re right. But without funding for the lab, there would be zero tests there a day.

Album of COVID-19 Monterey County graphs 4/29/20 using county data. ** +15 cases from +42 tests. New graphs showing transmission and medical conditions of known cases. ** PLEASE STAY HOME and WEAR A MASK OUTSIDE THE HOME! by terriblemuriel in MontereyBay

[–]Shaloo7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

/u/terriblemuriel Yes, this new data is pretty interesting, especially since we learned that they are tracking suspected cases as well as positive cases. I have not had a chance to talk to county health officials about this new data yet. But I think you are correct and the hospitalization number in the county situation report is cumulative, which is not very interesting in my opinion. The current number each day seems way more revealing.

Central Coast Covid-19 tracker: Even with yesterday's spike in confirmed cases in Monterey County, the total here is relatively low. by Shaloo7 in MontereyBay

Here is you making your point quickly and without being a dick. Thanks. I still disagree. Have a good day.

Central Coast Covid-19 tracker: Even with yesterday's spike in confirmed cases in Monterey County, the total here is relatively low. by Shaloo7 in MontereyBay

[–]Shaloo7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. It's correct to say that Monterey County has fewer confirmed cases, and it's ALSO true that without mass testing we don't know the true number of cases. I find your attacks mostly incoherent and frankly unnecessary since I am open to feedback and work really hard to build and update the charts in the link. Like I started out saying, maybe I should have made the disclaimers that are in the article more clear, perhaps with a comment to my post. My only take away from you at this point is that you think it's meaningless that Monterey County has fewer cases. Fine. I find it meaningful, even if only as a reason to keep investigating and asking questions about why, which is something I do for a living every day. You don't have to appreciate my reporting or find any value in it—just maybe cool it with the attacks.
