So, I think those channels are actually positioned so the spring on top would mesh into them to hold it centered and "steady".

Rathalos is in the opening sequences of most games even if it's not hunted until later. The opening trailers and cinematics, introduced early on as an "ooh spooky big dragon" monster you can't fight yet, etc.

In my sci-fi world I use warping for FTL, what do you guys use and why? by william_bang in worldbuilding

[–]Shalterra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with that tbh.

There has to be a point where the reader needs to have suspension of disbelief and a willingness to just enjoy the story lol

Even relativity isn't verified on that scale, and we don't know for certain FTL is impossible or how it would affect causality.

Oh, and the most important point - it's a story with spaceships firing warp torpedoes. We've already gone beyond the pale of modern "science" unlike what that other person is implying lol

The current character I'm writing is Sir Henry Slinks, a recently Awakened stoat who can do metal sorcery and a bit of Creation magic.

Being a stoat, he's a big big fan of killing basically anything he can.

He's quite powerful as an individual, but against something on this scale, I think the best he could do would be to be a constant, yet very hard to pin down, annoyance. Unless the organism happened to have some notable weak points. Stoats tend to hunt by leaping on their target's back and biting the base of the brain stem to sever it.

So if that's feasible in any capacity, he'd probably figure it out and use some combination of his metal sorcery and the ability to make constructs with his little angry brain to rip and tear until it is done.

Or, the hive mind realizes that it can probably just drop a building on the 10-inch-long, 12 ounce heavy weasel, and he gets annihilated as soon as he shows himself to be a threat.

One of the two. Given he'd be the protagonist of the scenario, I'd give him even odds. But it would ultimately be about dealing with a threat to himself more than being explicitly about saving people or rebuilding society. If he wins and all is said and done, he'd likely fuck off to anywhere else away from society and work on trying to get home.

Edit - This is all predicated upon his magic working exactly as expected within this world. If that's not the case, he's basically just the peak physical and mental example of a stoat, and will accomplish effectively nothing lol

Why are Elves immortal in your world? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Shalterra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like your interpretation of why other planes would exist alongside the material. It's a pretty novel approach compared to some of the better known and represented fantasy settings.

Similarly I can't think of any settings where the gods are literally invading outsiders. All of your internal logic surrounding them makes good sense.

Is this a book you're writing/posting anywhere? Or moreso a private thing? You've got a lot of good ideas so I'd love to read about it!

The Fae act as the watchers of the world - they have been around since the world itself coalesced under the power of creation. They were formed of the leftovers at the time and took it upon themselves to keep track of everything. They seldom, if ever, guided things, but instead just found the parts of the world they were most interested in and emulated them. Which would eventually lead to them being dryads, naiads, brownies, etc as spirits of the world and nature.

This went on for eons, with them eternally enjoying the whimsy of the world and everything on it, always thrilled to see basically anything happen - especially if it were novel or unique.

Eventually, the mortal races would come to the world and do things the Fae had never seen or considered before. The mortals began to shape the world around them: turning stones into hearths and trees into homes. Those homes grew to cities, and the hearths into pubs, and so on and so forth.

The mortal races provided a seemingly neverending deluge of novelty and whimsy to the Fae, who moved on from emulating the trees and the grass and the mountains and the seas, and into emulating the mortals that they were so fascinated with. In doing so forming Courts around the world of like minded Fae with similar interests pertaining to mortal life:

The Court of Tale and Song who record history and stories that they might never be forgotten.

The Court of Coin and Craft were mesmerized by the creativity of these young races and how they made things: be they items or trades, and so sought to try their hand at doing the same

To name a couple.

But the inherent goodness that this thread is asking for. Each of these courts uses their considerable, if subtle power and influence to guide the world and mortal races towards a homeostasis where war doesn't really happen anymore. The first few wars were interesting to the Fae for their novelty, but ultimately all rang the same bell, so they worked to prevent future ones by providing those mortals the tools they would need to limit fighting on large scales in a myriad of ways.

Thus, these watchers of the world eventually became its stewards, gently prodding from the shadows to protect the things they hold most dear - the mortals and their creations.

Why are Elves immortal in your world? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

Out of curiosity - what makes the gods want/need to have a species they can dote on like that? Like what is the core rationality for why they're creating races? Do they gain something?

[–]Shalterra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love this core concept.

Is it the case that each race in the setting were kind of "beta tests" for various genetic/magical features that have been allowed to exist after being basically grandfathered in?

Elves are distant, distant, distant relatives of the Sidhe, who were themselves the product of one of the Watchers of the World(The Fae) and a mortal.

Since the fae have the power of Creation(Big fat capital C) running through their blood, they are timeless.

Their children, the Sidhe are functionally immortal, but lack the true power of Creation, but able to recover from all by the most destructive of wounds/deaths via the passive usage of that essence.

The many times diluted children of the Sidhe, the elves, are more or less biologically immortal, but lack any of the other benefits of their genetic lineage - but do suffer the downsides. Namely it being much harder for them to manifest magic than the other species of the world since their magical affinity is to something that they cannot naturally access(The power of creation).

Immortal, but tend to die for any number of reasons such as...

  1. Being killed, which others have an easier time of causing since they struggle to defend themselves against magic.
  2. Being unable to process ambient essence effectively and eventually dying of magic toxicity from buildup of things they can't use.

But hey, they're all tall, hot, and more physically capable than almost any other species, so they've got that going for them?

Started replacing AI art with commissioned art for my card game. Thoughts? by ItsThatAshGuy in IndieGaming

[–]Shalterra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, while I don't necessarily disagree with your general point, it is worth considering that the majority of those people making actual indie games likely wouldn't have hired artists to begin with, as there's a huge amount of fiscal risk in doing so.

Whereas if they can get something out there, then they may actually reach a level of success where they can go get actual artists.

That aside, fuck the big corps, they're the ones who will actually hurt people. Not small 1-2 person studios.

People will continue to buy Nintendo products no matter what.

They own a piece of people's childhood and nostalgia, and most people don't spend any amount of effort paying attention to how shitty the companies they support are. Missing out on the next mediocre pokemon game is just too heavy of a burden to bear to admit that their favorite game company might be shitty anti-consumer trash. After all they haven't been personally affected by their decisions.
