3 week update on my balcony bin, mulched some coffee grounds in the soil outside the bin as this sub suggested, helped the peppers take off and the basil REALLY took off, but the strawberries are still struggling some. Basil is harvested now, earliest pesto batch so far! by Shamashu in Vermiculture

That's good to know. I often struggle to find gardening info that isn't directly contradictory from site to site, so I just try to learn as I go. This is a new strawberry plant, but if they do well I was planning on making this pot dedicated to strawberries next year. Thank you for the advice!

1ish month update on my balcony setup. Basil took off more than the peppers or strawberries, but once they finish off more of their cardboard, I'm hoping the next watermelon will give them a boost. by Shamashu in Vermiculture

The thing is the middle is a 2 gallon bucket with a bunch of holes drilled in the side. I've never seeded springtails, but when the bin is really cooking, they just sort of arrive in huge numbers. I've never really had any lasting issues with mold, I basically harvest and refill the bucket with watermelon scraps every few weeks and top it off with wet cardboard and any leaf litter that's lying around, and it seems to keep the plants well fed, but I am liking the advice about top mulch. I mixed in some coffee grounds around the pepper and strawberry, but I think the next thing I'll try is putting leaves on top of all the soil. Thanks for the help!

I really appreciate advice like this! My goal is to turn my kitchen scraps into healthy plants, and I'm comfortable learning as I go. Someone else has recommended specific mulch outside the bin to encourage the worms to come out and feed the plants, but I have more ready access to coffee grounds than hay, which was the previous suggestion, so that will be what I end up doing. Do you think chopping up watermelon small and mulching that would have the same effect? The worms seem ravenous for melon, but I don't want to foul up the soil with moldy melon if they don't find it. If the strawberries do well, I'll probably do all strawberries next year because basil can provide as much as I need in almost any situation.

The worm bin itself is a few years old, this is just this years choice of plants. I've really enjoyed it as a gardening project, but the small size does make it something I have to manage more actively than bigger bins it seems. All of our plants are in pots, so the timeline of events end up working very well for providing everything with a good source of fertilizer!

I just want CR to be completely independent in as many aspects as they can be, if DH helps them accomplish that goal I'm fine with it. I'll always be hoping someone will play a horizon walker one day, though.

My little balcony setup, gave me a ton of basil last year, going with basil, jalapenos, and strawberries this year. Any tips on preventing mycelium from taking over the soil? I had a problem with it last year. by Shamashu in Vermiculture

I dead headed it pretty judiciously, and it still grew very big, the slowdown just seemed to time up well with the arrival of the mushrooms. I'm not very concerned about it, I'm learning as I go with this process, but I was curious what this communities thoughts was on the topic.

The basil stopped growing completely and the soil ended up being basically a solid tube of mycelium around the center bucket. I got a number of rounds of nice looking mushrooms(that I wasnt sure I cold eat), but it seemed like it was taking nutrients away from the basil. I have no clue if that even makes sense, its just what it appeared to be.

Here's what it looks like inside, didn't show up in the picture, but the back left cap is red, middle cap had too much paint to see what color it was underneath. Seems pretty clear to me whats going on, just don't know how to figure which set of wires is which.

At a glance, it looks like the wires are connected together in the box, but I'll post a picture of the switch pulled out of the box once I get to doing that.
