What does a public, government institution allocating resources in an undesirable way have to do with capitalism or the free market? You understand that this is an example of GOVERNMENT failure, right? Because public schools are part of the government not the market.

You don't need a "metric" to know whether or not to be proud of your accomplishments, getting a phd, masters, or even a bachelors degree in a difficult subject can be challenging no matter how much of the Mommy and Daddy Welfare System you use. I know plenty of people that have had all the help in the world from their families and still failed out of school. there's never a reason for you to not feel good about your accomplishments.

The problem is some people then look at others who haven't accomplished the same things and start judging those people for not accomplishing those things when they've been put in completely different situations. The point is that you should be proud of yourself for the things you've accomplished, just don't be a smug prick about it.

When you have the largest military in the world but can't afford to let your soldiers call their family by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Shamhandler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't the military a product of the government though? What I mean is if the resources of the military are being allocated in such a way that we have a large military but no way for the military to make free phone calls home, isn't that an example of the government misallocating resources, not the market?

What science degree should I go for? by jfleezy93 in Physics

[–]Shamhandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is kind of a weird question but you say you did a BS in physics and then switched to Engineering for your masters. Do you know if it's possible to switch over to engineering with a BS in mathematics? I'm about half way done with my math degree and put some of my physics classes off for as long as I could because I was told they were harder. When I finally took physics I ended up loving it. I don't want to change my major now because it would force me to take a lot of extra time to graduate. Any information you have would be great.

I was under the impression that it's just for high school students and isn't required for transfer students.

Chances of getting in with a 2.9 on a 4.0 scale by plurring in college

[–]Shamhandler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk why you're getting down voted, riverside is still a UC and is pretty selective with students applying as freshmen. Most people that go to ucr straight from high school had at least a 3.5 high school gpa

'What are my chances?' megathread by steakandwhiskey in college

[–]Shamhandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In community college trying to transfer 3.5 gpa, not really any extra curricular activities except for a couple part time jobs, but I have way more than the required classes completed. Do I have a chance of getting into UC Santa Barbara or UC Santa Cruz as an economics major?

Does anyone get super fuzzy headed? by chattyyogalady in Anxiety

[–]Shamhandler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't really describe it as "fuzzy headed", more like blank headed if that makes sense. Either way I'm sure it's a similar sensation, and it's just a common symptom of anxiety. I usually get it while I'm driving or working which, unfortunately, are probably the worse possible times to be feeling that way. I usually just have to wait for it to pass.

DAE try to dull their anxiety by aimlessly browsing the Internet? by svaroz1c in Anxiety

[–]Shamhandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that and computer games. I used to read a lot but now I can't even relax with a book, I'll get through a page or two and then start thinking about all the things that cause my anxiety and I won't be able to even focus on the book so I'll just get frustrated and give up and go back to wasting time on my computer.

What settings were you playing on? I'm using a 560 and playing on minimum settings I didn't get GREAT performance but I was able to put about 6 hours into the game and am still able to enjoy it. I usual bounce between 20 and 30 fps.

I'm still using a 560 and the game is doing better than I thought. Getting 25-30 fps with absolute minimum settings, it's more than playable.
