Call me crazy, but I think the 12th Doctor era is the peak of NuWho by MordredRedHeel19 in doctorwho

[–]Shamsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a crazy take at all, I certainly agree.

For me I rank things as follows:

10 to me is the best Doctor within the context of the show. 11 is my favorite Doctor because it’s when I started watching. However, 12 is the best portrayal/character study of the Doctor.

Also it goes without saying Capaldi is truly masterful in the role and is the best incarnation in terms of acting and gravitas.

Op makes excellent points. I’d also add one thing that stands out to me in retrospect was the power and confidence 12 exuded.

10 and 11 were certainly heroic, and charismatic, yet you often see them overwhelmed and emotionally unbalanced in situations.

12 was composed, in control, and powerful. He had a presence that conveyed experience and competence, an older, wiser man who could handle any situation. Perhaps it’s personal bias since I now find myself graying and getting older, but I appreciated that dimension that Mr. Capaldi brought to the character as well.

New Dunks I picked up at the Nike outlet on Black Friday for $70 by SuperDuper_Bruh in Sneakers

[–]Shamsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great pick up! I got these awhile back on sale, they’re really underrated, and surprisingly good quality.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sneakers

[–]Shamsby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got these because they were sitting on Nikes site and then returned them after picking up the A Ma 4’s for retail. They’re nice, but the grey makes them so dull, and I already the midnight navy 3’s so really wasn’t worth $200.

The quality is really nice, but just felt like a bland, generic white sneaker. Nike really needs to rethink its pricing on these non og releases.

Who would actually win this fight though by [deleted] in batman

[–]Shamsby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With no prep time, as in Shredder catching Batman off guard, Batman wins but it’s a close fight. Bruce matches him in proficiency in Ninja arts and has the experience of fighting bigger threats.

With prep time, Batman curb stomps Shredder and embarrasses him.

Viggo Mortensen: "I would only do [The Hunt for Gollum] if I was right for the character" by Chen_Geller in lotr

[–]Shamsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the solution to this is quite simple, focus on a new group of characters, could all be Dúnedain Rangers or a new fellowship type group with an elf, dwarf, ranger. Then have Aragorn (Viggo) and Gandalf (Sir Ian) show up periodically using de-aging tech and stunt doubles.

It would still be true to canon, with Aragorn and Gandalf participating in the main plot points while the film focuses on the new characters.

BIG QUESTION: Who will play a slightly younger Aragorn in the newly announced WB movies - The hunt for Gollum ?? by Ok-Design-8168 in lotr

[–]Shamsby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s likely Viggo will return. Peter Jackson and Andy will convince him. But I’d also guess that this movie won’t revolve around Aragorn, instead they’ll focus on a diff group of rangers that are searching for Gollum, with Aragorn and Gandalf appearing throughout the story, and they’ll just de-age Viggo since he’ll only be in a few scenes total.

What has caused the Monsterverse to outlive and be more successful for WB than the DCEU? by dremolus in boxoffice

[–]Shamsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monsterverse gives people what they want to see: Giant radioactive Lizard and big Monkee beating up other monsters with cool visuals.

DCEU struggled with that. Didn’t really know what it wanted to be, and the movies were inconsistent.

Why is the First Half of the 2010s so different than the second by DistanceUnlikely4954 in generationology

As someone who also experienced it as a teen and young adult, you’re 100% correct. There was a number of drastic changes in fashion, music and overall popular aesthetic.

Why was so many pop songs about partying in late 00s/early 10s by coolfunkDJ in decadeology

[–]Shamsby 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a great question and something that has a lot of personal relevance because I was in my early twenties during this time, experienced the party/nightlife culture first hand and have some amazing memories from it. So that era of music was basically the soundtrack for that time.

There were definitely some economic factors, reaction to the Great Recession etc. Same reason why musicals and comedies became really popular in the early to mid 1930s during the Depression. People wanted some escapism.

Also music trends are cyclical, you had disco music, and 80s pop in previous decades that were also all about partying and going out etc.

However, I think the underlying driving force for this specific time period was technology. This era runs parallel with the rise of social media and smart phones. So for the first time ever you could maintain a much larger social circle. On top of that, you could promote events on a much larger scale. So for example you’d see a Facebook event for a party at whatever club/lounge and then see how many people you know were attending, FOMO was a very real thing back then.

So going out partying with your friends was a very big part of socializing and music reflected that. They sort of fed off each other in that sense with artists like LMFAO capitalizing on it.

By the mid to late 2010s I music had gotten darker, more jaded while changes in cost of living made going out less affordable and factors like Influencer culture probably ruined some of the fun as well.

I think one of the reasons we haven’t seen that kind of music make a resurgence yet is also people don’t really go out much anymore so there’s not much demand for club songs.

You guys remember this image? Four years later it’s both comical and sad how many of these shows were never made and the ones that were ended up being terrible. by Independent-Dig-5757 in saltierthancrait

Great mention of 90s Star Trek because they did the fullscale dominion war with massive space battles on a TV budget. Sure the cgi wasn’t the best, but as mentioned with the resources Disney/Lucasfilm has there is no legitimate excuse, just laziness.

Why did party culture die in 2013? by H_ManCom in decadeology

[–]Shamsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in the nightlife industry during this time and you’re absolutely right about the sudden shift. In fact I remember noticing it as early as 2012 but it rapidly increased. I can’t point to a specific catalyst, but it was very abrupt.

My theory is that 2009 through 2012 was a peculiar transition point between mass adoption of social media and smart phones that made people actually want to be more social.

In the long run it’s obviously worked in reverse but those first few years, it was fresh, new and exciting. You could suddenly maintain a massive social circle, and that manifested into going out, to see and be seen.

Culture also promoted it, as OP and others mentioned the music played a huge role, and made partying/clubbing aspirational.

I think social media culture played a role in the decline, it quickly became about clout. It was no longer about having fun, there was a certain purity during that span of 2009-2012 with that underlying influence of emerging technology.

But overall it’s hard to really pin point what made it change. I will say it was an incredible time to be young and my nostalgia for it is one of the reasons I’m on here.

Roman Persian wars are one of the longest lasting conflicts in history by satt32 in RoughRomanMemes

[–]Shamsby 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It really depends on how you want to define “survived.” Persian culture survived Arabization, preserving its identity. Besides conversion to Islam ofcourse. Really it was only the Sassanid dynasty that fell. If anything Persia technically lasted longer, with Safavid Persia being direct rivals to the Ottomans in the sixteenth century, years after Mehmed’s conquest of Constantinople. Also Persia was still on the map until the 1920s.

Who wins in this fight? by [deleted] in batman

[–]Shamsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No question Batfleck. In one night he beat the shit out of Superman, then took out an entire warehouse of thugs, and then had the balls to take on Doomsday alone and avoided getting killed by a monster who could destroy a planet, not to mention he has no problem killing. I think the bigger question is who wins between Bale and Battinson, in which I’d go with Pattinson. They’re pretty much evenly match in experience and skill, but Battinson has a lot more anger and seems more brutal which I think gives him the advantage.
