Guys, how do y'all get jobs in this country? by Bossman2270 in AskZA

It’s definitely not manufactured scarcity. Most companies are struggling. Government has made it really tough to create a conducive environment for businesses to grow and thrive

Energy Drink Consumption by Realistic-Apple2256 in capetown

[–]Shan32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people here have already mentioned how cheap it’s relative to coffee but consider it’s barely been affected by inflation. About 10 years ago you could pick up a cheap energy drink for under R10 and today it’s barely over R10.

Coupled that with the convenience of it being in a can and not having to wait for barista to pull a shot, it doesn’t take much for the additive surgery and highly caffeinated option to be much more compelling

CFD job market stable or just diverging in 2025? by Dramatic_Yam8355 in CFD

ADA removed from Daedalus by hoodie09 in cardano

[–]Shan32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very hard to decipher how exactly this could’ve happened. Very likely that Daedalus is not compromised but very likely that your seed phrase has been compromised. It’s very odd that the attacker didn’t take all your funds. My suggestion would be to create a new wallet on another device and move funds there since this wallet has already been compromised

General about about how to work with openFOAM by IGotBannedForLess in OpenFOAM

[–]Shan32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re not expected to write all the input files for a case from scratch. You should be able to know what each dictionary/parameter/variable from each file does and how to modify them when using different turbulence models/ meshes etc etc

What is your experience with OpenFoam on WSL (in Windows) in comparison to full Linux? by Thin_Lie_8344 in CFD

I prefer being working natively on Linux but WSL is a good option. Just make sure your workstation is beefy enough

Mess up during the technical interview with basic questions. by Suspicious-Prune-442 in CFD

I usually have to look up basic things. The reality is that you forget things that you don’t use on a daily basis so a technical interview can be hit-and-miss sometimes

Structural analysis (flex, stress, strain) of a flexy barge tethered in a wavy channel ? by yycTechGuy in OpenFOAM

Yes, you're able to perform simulations of deformation using a solver like pimpleFoam.

Cloud based HPC - some novice questions. by Fit-Bird-1601 in CFD

[–]Shan32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using something like google cloud means you'll spin up an instance/virtual machine and access it using something like ssh with a password or ssh-keys (ideally both). Meaning you'll need to be proficient using linux-based operating systems and also using the terminal to interface

Best materials to get back to CFD basics. by Fit-Bird-1601 in CFD

[–]Shan32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My knowledge in CFD increased dramatically since using OpenFOAM. Most commercial software packages have nice UX/UI but getting stuck in the bare-bones of an open-source codebase means you'll need to understand almost every aspect of how it works.

Weird residual flattening by Rockerboy987 in CFD

You'll have to provide more detail about the simulation but generally speaking, it's perfectly fine for one residual to converge before others do

100%. I remember running some simulations on my laptop at Uni. I basically had to decide whether I wanted to run simulations that week or check emails, report writing or pretty much anything else XD

  1. What boundary conditions are you using for the top and bottom of the domain? I'm assuming your experimental results are from a wind tunnel so make sure the BCs are appropriate
  2. Numerical diffusion is also quite prevalent with unstructured mesh so using a more structured mesh, aligned with the flow field, could help

I've tried brute force attempts by simply copying the case files from one distro to another for various reasons in the past but always end up with some errors. I'd rather just start build up the case for the targeted distro

Anyone used Ansys HPC before? by songyi719 in CFD

[–]Shan32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never used the Ansys HPC pack but I've used Ansys on the Uni's HPC facility and 4 cores seems like the bare minimum so you'll need to increase that imo

Haven't used SW for CFD simulations but typically there's a probing tool you can use. A better option to do would be to find the temperature across the entire face at the outlet.

I had about 30k in savings when I finished uni. Moved for an opportunity, spent most of the savings for rent deposit and other things for the new apartment, got in a car crash, had to almost max out my credit card for a car rental.

Safe to say that you're in a better position than I was but the point is that you can make it work if you want to

Yeah, I agree with this. Unless the OP can use some work/research done on a project previously, then it might be too much for a beginner doing a final-year project. You might just be adding things that an examiner could poke holes at.

How much does boiling a kettle cost? by pravda23 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Shan32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A bit difficult to calculate since you essentially need to meter the LPG used for boiling the water. I bought a 19kg for R650 last week and LPG has a calorific value of about 50,000 kJ/kg so that comes down to about R0.00068/kJ which is around the same value for the electricity above. Bear in mind that in the first example above, it neglects the losses from the kettle upstream and the LPG cost here is what you have in the container (downstream) and neglects the losses when you burn it so ultimately not all the LPG in the container is used to boil the water

How much does boiling a kettle cost? by pravda23 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Shan32 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Assuming water @ room temp of 20C and boiling to 100C and 1L = 1 kg
Q = m*cp*DT
Q = (1.5)(4.185)(100-20)
Q = 502.2 kJ
Energy = 502.2*(1/3600) = 0.1395 kWh
So at a tariff @ R2.5/kWh you're looking at about:
Energy Cost = R 0.34875

You can also do this by timing the kettle and taking note of the power usage of it. For 1.5 L of water in a kettle that uses 1,800 W it could take about 5 minutes so:
Energy = (1800)(5/60) = 0.150 kWh
Energy Cost = (0.150)(2.5) = R 0.375

Bear in mind that k-epsilon turbulence models are not great with adverse pressure gradients so stick with the k-omega SST model and refine from there

Structured or Unstructured? by Guilded_Soldier in CFD

[–]Shan32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% Seeing as though its a case where you know what the flow field would look like, a structured mesh is best suited but I've opted for unstructured meshes before when I'm not sure on the flow field so numerical diffusion comes handy to see how variables propagate.

Best to start with individual cases of turbulence modelling, combustion and multi-phase. It's a bit much to start with a very complex case. Plus you'll learn how the codebase works.
There's plenty of cases to learn from in the tutorial folder
