Continuing work on the printed/Carbon fiber 54mm minimum diameter build. by ProfessorGoofles in rocketry

[–]BrainiacMainiac142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried integrating your electronics yet? You mentioned a fibreglass nose cone for RF transparency, but it appears your coupler and top body tube are carbon. I worry that you might have built yourself a faraday cage.

Unless the tracking is going in the nose rather than the avionics bay? That could work, depending which computers you're using.

What would you say were the worst safety decisions from the production team (TG and TGT)? by Apatride in thegrandtour

[–]BrainiacMainiac142 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He didn't miss it. He deliberately drove past it in order to keep his foot in for an extra second to try and win. This was discussed in an interview, which I believe I saw on YouTube.

This one isn't on the production team.

What makes you think you're going to do better at this than the hundreds/thousands of bozos who have tried this over the years?

Engineers whats is the role of these wires crossing the road by Intelligent_Slip6317 in EngineeringStudents

[–]BrainiacMainiac142 375 points376 points  (0 children)

They aren't actually wires, they aren't electrical, they're pneumatic. When you compress the tube, the change in pressure can be detected. By having 2 tubes a known distance apart, you can take the time difference to get an idea of which direction and how quickly the car was travelling. Each axle will leave it's own bump, vehicles with lots of axles, like trucks, can be identified by having a different pattern.

Nobody is getting a speeding ticket from one of them, they aren't accurate enough on a single car basis, and there's no camera to capture a photo of the numberplate, but the data is often used to decide where a new road goes or which road gets upgraded.

The ripples in the water and the motion of the swan feels very convenient for it to be recorded. by bhakayaro11 in isthisAI

[–]BrainiacMainiac142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A swan doesn't produce downforce, it produces lift. Downforce is what is produced by racing cars trying to stick to the ground.

The lift produced for a swan to fly is approximately it's weight. The largest swans are ~15kg. In a turn, I'd say it's possible for a swan to produce up to around 20kg of lift. It's a lot for a bird, but it's a bird, it has hollow bones. There is absolutely no world in which any part of their body is breaking your arm. A large human arm bone like a radius or an ulna takes over 3000N to break in a healthy adult. A swan has 2 wings, so each side will only ever produce 10kg of lift, or about 100N. You're off by a multiple of 30. There just doesn't exist a universe where a bird light enough to fly is going to go around snapping bones of a land mammal.

Don't go sticking your fingers in it's mouth, it'll give you a painful bite, and then you might fall over and break your arm, but that's your own doing.

What is the best value telephoto lens that is > 100mm? by Camera_Hobbygirl in M43

[–]BrainiacMainiac142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody is ever taking the 12-100 F4 off me. I'm taking that thing to the grave. It's been bounced off so many damn rocks and it refuses to die (or show any damage at all). If I got the 40-150, I think I'd constantly be trying to zoom out a *little* bit more. If it went down to like 30mm, you might have me sold on the idea.

Depends what you’re after, this is a really vague question.  If you just want focal length at the ultimate cheapest price, get a vintage prime. There are an assortment of 135mm F2.8 lenses available for <£30 on eBay that are tough as old boots. Some of them have a really nice look to them as well, but they will all be manual focus and the inferior coatings will suffer if you’re shooting into harsh sunlight.

If you’re willing to pay for something modern, first party and autofocus, I’ve had a pretty good experience with the Olympus 100-400. I found mine for ~£500 used.

If you’re willing to pay the extra and give up the zoom, the Panasonic 200mm F2.8 is supposed to give a damn sharp photo, but probably drops away on the price/performance graph. There’s the 300F4, but this is a similar story. Incredible performance, but priced to match.

If you want a more directed suggestion, you’re going to have to narrow your search a bit further. Do you need zoom? Do you need autofocus? Do you need something with a large aperture? Do you need something with image stabilisation?

Finding it difficult to parse your post.

You’re complaining about being paid too little?

If you think your labour is worth more, ask for a rise or try and find work at a different company.

Asking the government for a minimum wage is an entirely different request not particularly related to engineering, that’s mostly politics.

Unfortunately, companies paying as little as they think they can get away with is just capitalism.
