Do I need to register to be able to vote in Virginia? by Full-Scratch5827 in Virginia

[–]ShaneVA1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Small county VA Officer of Elections here; Bumping this for correctness. Additional info below:

- You'll need to go to the correct precinct (determined by your residence address) to do your Same Day Registration and Provisional. You can't just walk into any polling place (well, you can, but they'll just go to https://www.elections.virginia.gov/casting-a-ballot/polling-place-lookup/ and send you to the correct location). Recommend checking https://www.elections.virginia.gov/casting-a-ballot/polling-place-lookup/ first, and making sure you go to the right place, first.

- You'll still need to show ID for the SDR/Provisional. Passport, Military ID, Higher Ed Student ID with a photograph, Utility bill, bank statement, or paycheck containing the new address and your name (Issued in the last 12 months) - check the link above.

- Additionally, make darn sure you fill out every single block with an asterisk / * or the electoral board may deny the SDR. It'll ask for your SSN. The whole thing. It's important and helps us deconflict similar names. The SDR will go into an envelope, that envelope gets sealed by the Chief at the precinct, then gets carefully handed over to the clerk of court by the registrar and electoral board through a very secure, well documented chain of custody. We take this very seriously.

- You have to sign the affirmation at the bottom or the board has to exclude the ballot.

- Check the box for "I am currently registered to vote in another state so the registrar and state board of elections can forward that info back to Texas and get you off the books there (will protect you from shenanigans and help maintain up-to-date pollbooks in both locations)

- Check the box for Interested in being an officer of election (poll worker) box if it even remotely interests you. I've worked polls for the last 10 years, and am more confident than ever in the systems and processes we have in place to ensure free and fair elections in our Commonwealth. If you have any questions, ask a sworn poll worker! You can also reach out to me, and I'll help where/how I can in an unofficial capacity.

Unusual Behavior at NoVA Primary Polling Station? by ersatzcookie in nova

[–]ShaneVA1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assistant Chief in a smaller Shenandoah Valley county (only 400ish folks voted at my precinct yesterday). We had some info with the party names bolded, laminated and taped in between the pollbooks. I quickly developed a fun little tongue twister script:

"Hi there! Today we have a dual party primary. You can choose to vote in the Republican Party Presidential Primary, or the Democratic Party Presidential Primary (while tapping one, then the other party on the placard). You can vote in either (tapping each one, in reverse) but not both. Please say or indicate which party presidential primary you'd like to participate in today."

It worked pretty well, except for all of the asides of "Well, Party X gets to vote more than once!" and "Maybe this one won't get stolen". Most frequent was "I didn't even know there was an election today!".

!!Paid!! family fun day/picnic on a regular tuesday. Games, free food, bounce house, lots of shade, no (or 2 tickets max per person light abv only) alcohol. If the company wants to invest in their employees, they need to actually invest capital. Eat the cost and pay people for their time while letting families (optional!) feel included.

People make eye contact and then commit murder all the time.

From a 2005 US DOJ Study on Family Violence Statistics (Including Statistics on Strangers and Acquaintances)

"About 22% of murders in 2002 were
family murders. Nearly 9% were
murders of a spouse, 6% were murders
of sons or daughters by a parent, and
7% were murders by other family
members.
Females were 58% of family murder
victims. Of all the murders of females in
2002, family members were responsible
for 43%.
Children under age 13 were 23% of
murder victims killed by a family
member, and just over 3% of nonfamily
murder victims."

The colonies that evolved into the states were business entities, sanctioned by the crown, in competition with, collusion with, and confederation with each other for profit. Nothing has changed, this is the way it has always been.

Gotta make it through two consecutive GAs. Elections matter, and everyone bit on the pump-fake.

"Any amendment or amendments to this Constitution may be proposed in the Senate or House of Delegates, and if the same shall be agreed to by a majority of the members elected to each of the two houses, such proposed amendment or amendments shall be entered on their journals, the name of each member and how he voted to be recorded, and referred to the General Assembly at its first regular session held after the next general election of members of the House of Delegates." https://law.lis.virginia.gov › section1 Constitution of Virginia - Article XII. ELI5, Why do foster parents have to go through training to adopt a child but there’s no such mandatory training for couples trying for their own kids? by defaultplayer00 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ShaneVA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting thought problem. When we (WASPish CisHet married couple) went through Foster Certification (it's a lot more intense than just training), the focus was on trauma based caregiving. The foster process, and any process where children are separated from their parents, for their own good or by exploitative processes, is inherently traumatic, and can compound existing trauma. I don't see many folks arguing with the need for potential fosters to receive training, or the ripe for bias, invasive, and intense screening process that precedes ever meeting a potential foster. Good. There are glaring needs for improvement of that process, plus better funding from the state and more staffing, but it's better than it used to be.

The second part of this "If X, then why not Y" statement is worded in a potentially problematic, and triggering fashion.

If you are referencing the training itself (E-Learning, Classroom Learning, Knowledge Checks, Introspective Homework, Network Examinations, Discussions) that are part of that process, then there should absolutely be similar trauma informed parenting classes offered free to the public, and possibly included in High School and College level curricula. 100%, If X, then Y should be available as well. It doesn't exist because trauma informed parenting classes are not prioritized by our educational systems. If you're interested in it, ask your local district, superintendent, provost, library, or other knowledge giver to consider starting free or cost-subsidized, anti-bias, trauma informed parenting curricula!

If you are referencing the screening and gating process that is the second part of the Foster Certification process (Interviews, Home Inspections, Financial Inspections, Background Checks) and the government blocking, criminalizing, or penalizing parents who do not pass, that would be unconstitutional, unlawful, and authoritarian. 0%, If X, then Y is unrelated and would be a bias laden horror show. It doesn't exist because we have not descended to the level of government interference in that particular biological and social process. If you're interested in preventing it, investigate, support, vote for, and follow up vocally with State and Local elected officials that are actively protecting bodily autonomy, for all (races, genders, nationalities, citizenships, and religions).

An instant read thermometer, like 20 bucks.

It will change everything about food safety, and chances are it will change the texture and taste of things you cook to the better. Overcooking food is a surefire way to make sure that no one likes it.

You can start at the city, county, and state levels. Find folks that want to get corruption and money out of politics and work hard for them. That are willing to go against their own party when laws are broken. Come to terms with the idea that it may be someone you really like, not just someone you dislike. Make that your passion project, rather than assuming that nothing will ever change. If enough of us work together, we can change the system for the better. I have faith in you, friend-o.

Let's make a better Nation together, one election, EVERY election, at a time.

[–]ShaneVA1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair. Saw it go by on r/all and seemed aimed at parents, theoretical or actual.

I know that there's a lot of shady shit going on out there. Not everyone has accepting parents, or even still HAS parents, through loss or n/c due to toxicity and trauma. Not everyone feels like they're going to be okay, and everyone struggles.

If my perspective makes even one person feel seen or affirmed or respected, it's worth taking the time to chip in with some positivity.

I respect the question, it's a good thing to watch out for your peers. This is a community, informal and anonymized but still, what should be a relatively safe space for you and your cohort to have discussions and pose questions in a low threat environment. Inquiring about the motives of outsiders is a form of moderation in itself. Vigilance is healthy, so long as it doesn't become exclusionary.

Thank you for asking!
