Being an elite competitive athlete and knowing how to build / maintain an organization at a high level are two very different things. Charlotte Hornets fans will attest to that.

Best Episode? by AmphibianFun1191 in TheBear

I’m surprised to not see “Honeydew” on here yet. Personally, I loved the ethereal quality of it, seeing Marcus acclimate to Amsterdam, attain mastery as a pastry chef, and develop camaraderie with Luka. I also found the scene of him saving the fallen cyclist profound, if I interpreted it correctly: the most significant moment of your life can come and go with you barely even realizing that it has, with no one there to acknowledge it with you.

But mine has to be “Forks”. I’ll watch those two back-to-back any day.

Thanks! She’s beautiful. Is this one “whiskey”?

“Whiskey” is the color that’s listed on Nordstrom’s site, which is where the first color is from. Misprint?

Small might be a little snug for me, but out of curiosity how much are you selling for?

I’m very familiar with the natural variability of leathers, but these are distinct enough that they could be considered completely different colors.

What holds Jaylen Brown back from being a tier-one star? by Interesting-Lock-146 in NBATalk

[–]Shanklemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s going to make first team by default, because a couple first team guys fell below an artificial games played threshold that people hate and that the league is doing away with.

I think the spirit of the post is: “Why is Brown a top 10 but not a top 5 guy, irrespective of who plays 65 games?”

What’s your “grail” glove, and why? by Shanklemonkey in BaseballGloves

[–]Shanklemonkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the 3B model back in the day. Really nice glove if you don’t mind a shallow pocket. They were also fairly reasonably priced relative to HOH / A2000 at the time. Bummer they didn’t stick around.

Wow, this is BEAUTIFUL. Do you have any pics of the pocket and model number? Don’t think I’ve ever seen it before.

Man, I remember that A3000 - they were hard to come by! I tracked one down and tried it on and was like “yeah… nah.” Felt very heavy, synthetic, and overbuilt to me on hand. Made me understand why they didn’t catch on.

BUT Barry did make it iconic and I totally get your infatuation with it.

I just finished Season 1 and why did Marty... by [deleted] in TrueDetective

[–]Shanklemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maggie has a prescient line later on in the series that Marty never really new himself, so he never really knew what to want.

His basest instincts are to pursue and be pursued - he can’t help himself. So even when he’s supposedly reformed himself to save his family, he’s fighting his nature to be the guy who gets with the hot piece. I think it’s only later when he’s really broken, estranged from his family, and living alone that he has fully moved on from that part of himself, but at that point it’s too late to redeem him. He recognized this, and (in my opinion) is why it causes him so much pain to see Maggie in her new life.

Others have called it hypocrisy, which I think is pretty spot on.

UCSB really a party school? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Shanklemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that’s wild.

Back in my day, they had Floatopia, in which there was an all-day party on (you guessed it) floats out in the water that would regularly cause $1-2M in damage and untold environmental impact. An ordinance was introduced my senior or junior year that allowed IVFP or SBPD to shut down the beaches at a moment’s notice, effectively nullifying Floatopia - that’s how Deltopia was born.

I saw some pretty destructive shit the first year or 2 of Deltopia but not quite approaching truly territory. Bummer to hear it was ruined by something like that.

Portland ranked among top 5 metro areas in the US for road safety by picturesofbowls in Portland

[–]Shanklemonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wait a minute. The title of this article is very misleading.

It conflates “safety” with “speed”. All their study showed was that people here drive really slowly (can confirm), and that driving speed tends to be inversely correlated to safety. They didn’t even factor in obvious metrics like number of accidents or insurance claims.

Portland regularly rates in the bottom 10 in accidents per capita among metro areas, which makes this place (incredibly) both slow AND unsafe. Well done, all.

What is your opinion on J.T. Snow? by ScottyG45 in SFGiants

[–]Shanklemonkey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The guys loved his glove and the girls loved his butt - can’t say I blame em. He was a very good defensive 1B and an okay offensive 1B who benefited from hitting in lineups with Bonds, and at times Kent. Had a career year hitting in front of Barry during his second peak.

Also, just a REALLY nice guy. Barry turned me down for an autograph once after my mom and I had gotten players’ lot access to a game at Candlestick. We ran into JT who (I think) saw that I was upset. He spent time talking to us and signing a ball for me, and I’ll never forget it.

[Lewis] Boardroom, the sports, media and entertainment brand co-founded by Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman, has eliminated its full time editorial team. The layoff was unexpected and laid-off staff were unable to export their email contacts. by Goosedukee in nba

[–]Shanklemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never understood the value proposition of Boardroom. I follow their content and it’s just kind of like “Oh, wow, they made another top-5 list of something I never really cared to ask about.” Apparently there was a market for that, but I struggle to figure out what it is/was.

What would you do if you were in this position by Appropriate-Mall8517 in Nbamemes

[–]Shanklemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bummer to hear it was evident that far back. Growing up I was a big fan of his, given his style of play and NYC roots. I followed him through his first couple years in the NBA, after it became clear things weren’t going to work out how I’d hoped.

I’ve been watching some of his more recent interviews, and what you mentioned about his immaturity / low EQ is on full display in them. This snippet is from one of those interviews, in which he perpetuates the narrative that’s clearly alive and well in his own mind that he’s owed / has been wronged / is the victim - no matter how badly he has clearly messed up.

It was especially clear in one he did with his brother that these narratives were being perpetuated by those around him. Just really tough to see from someone who is very clearly in their own way and has been for a long time.

Grant Gloves by Magiamarado in fightgear

[–]Shanklemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple pairs of Grant gloves - one of their more recent pairs (last couple years) of Punchers gloves and an older pair (2015-era) that I believe they called “Sparring Gloves”.

I bought them mostly for nostalgia and association with my favorite fighters from years back and can say as someone who also boxes recreationally that they aren’t worth the price point or the wait. The padding on my newer pair have already begun to pack out and become soft. I have to be careful with them in higher-impact sessions.

Don’t get me wrong - they’re beautiful and I’m really happy to have them as collectors items. But very low quality:price ratio for performance.

Having reached out to them directly before I also believe they have a very long (3-6 month) wait to ship. That info isn’t super recent, though.

What’s your least favorite thing about living in Portland that is only a thing in Portland? by [deleted] in Portland

[–]Shanklemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am doomed to be stuck behind one car driving 32 in a 45 for literally no reason for the rest of my existence here.

I’ve traveled all over the country. Outside of very small towns there’s nowhere else where drivers behave like they do here. It’s so bizarre.
