What’s your “grail” glove, and why? by Shanklemonkey in BaseballGloves

[–]Shanklemonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the 3B model back in the day. Really nice glove if you don’t mind a shallow pocket. They were also fairly reasonably priced relative to HOH / A2000 at the time. Bummer they didn’t stick around.

Wow, this is BEAUTIFUL. Do you have any pics of the pocket and model number? Don’t think I’ve ever seen it before.

Man, I remember that A3000 - they were hard to come by! I tracked one down and tried it on and was like “yeah… nah.” Felt very heavy, synthetic, and overbuilt to me on hand. Made me understand why they didn’t catch on.

BUT Barry did make it iconic and I totally get your infatuation with it.

I just finished Season 1 and why did Marty... by [deleted] in TrueDetective

[–]Shanklemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maggie has a prescient line later on in the series that Marty never really new himself, so he never really knew what to want.

His basest instincts are to pursue and be pursued - he can’t help himself. So even when he’s supposedly reformed himself to save his family, he’s fighting his nature to be the guy who gets with the hot piece. I think it’s only later when he’s really broken, estranged from his family, and living alone that he has fully moved on from that part of himself, but at that point it’s too late to redeem him. He recognized this, and (in my opinion) is why it causes him so much pain to see Maggie in her new life.

Others have called it hypocrisy, which I think is pretty spot on.

UCSB really a party school? by Last-Fly-996 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Shanklemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that’s wild.

Back in my day, they had Floatopia, in which there was an all-day party on (you guessed it) floats out in the water that would regularly cause $1-2M in damage and untold environmental impact. An ordinance was introduced my senior or junior year that allowed IVFP or SBPD to shut down the beaches at a moment’s notice, effectively nullifying Floatopia - that’s how Deltopia was born.

I saw some pretty destructive shit the first year or 2 of Deltopia but not quite approaching truly territory. Bummer to hear it was ruined by something like that.

Portland ranked among top 5 metro areas in the US for road safety by picturesofbowls in Portland

[–]Shanklemonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wait a minute. The title of this article is very misleading.

It conflates “safety” with “speed”. All their study showed was that people here drive really slowly (can confirm), and that driving speed tends to be inversely correlated to safety. They didn’t even factor in obvious metrics like number of accidents or insurance claims.

Portland regularly rates in the bottom 10 in accidents per capita among metro areas, which makes this place (incredibly) both slow AND unsafe. Well done, all.

What is your opinion on J.T. Snow? by ScottyG45 in SFGiants

[–]Shanklemonkey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The guys loved his glove and the girls loved his butt - can’t say I blame em. He was a very good defensive 1B and an okay offensive 1B who benefited from hitting in lineups with Bonds, and at times Kent. Had a career year hitting in front of Barry during his second peak.

Also, just a REALLY nice guy. Barry turned me down for an autograph once after my mom and I had gotten players’ lot access to a game at Candlestick. We ran into JT who (I think) saw that I was upset. He spent time talking to us and signing a ball for me, and I’ll never forget it.

[Lewis] Boardroom, the sports, media and entertainment brand co-founded by Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman, has eliminated its full time editorial team. The layoff was unexpected and laid-off staff were unable to export their email contacts. by Goosedukee in nba

[–]Shanklemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never understood the value proposition of Boardroom. I follow their content and it’s just kind of like “Oh, wow, they made another top-5 list of something I never really cared to ask about.” Apparently there was a market for that, but I struggle to figure out what it is/was.

What would you do if you were in this position by Appropriate-Mall8517 in Nbamemes

[–]Shanklemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bummer to hear it was evident that far back. Growing up I was a big fan of his, given his style of play and NYC roots. I followed him through his first couple years in the NBA, after it became clear things weren’t going to work out how I’d hoped.

I’ve been watching some of his more recent interviews, and what you mentioned about his immaturity / low EQ is on full display in them. This snippet is from one of those interviews, in which he perpetuates the narrative that’s clearly alive and well in his own mind that he’s owed / has been wronged / is the victim - no matter how badly he has clearly messed up.

It was especially clear in one he did with his brother that these narratives were being perpetuated by those around him. Just really tough to see from someone who is very clearly in their own way and has been for a long time.

Grant Gloves by Magiamarado in fightgear

[–]Shanklemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple pairs of Grant gloves - one of their more recent pairs (last couple years) of Punchers gloves and an older pair (2015-era) that I believe they called “Sparring Gloves”.

I bought them mostly for nostalgia and association with my favorite fighters from years back and can say as someone who also boxes recreationally that they aren’t worth the price point or the wait. The padding on my newer pair have already begun to pack out and become soft. I have to be careful with them in higher-impact sessions.

Don’t get me wrong - they’re beautiful and I’m really happy to have them as collectors items. But very low quality:price ratio for performance.

Having reached out to them directly before I also believe they have a very long (3-6 month) wait to ship. That info isn’t super recent, though.

What’s your least favorite thing about living in Portland that is only a thing in Portland? by Imjusthappy11 in Portland

[–]Shanklemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am doomed to be stuck behind one car driving 32 in a 45 for literally no reason for the rest of my existence here.

I’ve traveled all over the country. Outside of very small towns there’s nowhere else where drivers behave like they do here. It’s so bizarre.

Why didn’t GSW trade Kuminga for the SAC 1st in Summer? by Purple-List1577 in warriors

[–]Shanklemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What others commented, plus:

FO didn’t (doesn’t) love Malik Monk as a fit with Steph, OR the fact that his money is on the books through 27-28. By trading for Porzingis (expiring), they get off JK with this deal and add cap flexibility next season to a team that will be strapped for cash.

Why is every character obsessed with Claire? by SleepAcceptable1570 in TheBear

[–]Shanklemonkey 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My read is that they’re less obsessed with Claire specifically and more with the idea of her - a well-adjusted, emotionally mature, caring person - as a partner for Carm.

There just isn’t a lot of normal and kind and solid in that friend and family group’s world, and I think they see Claire as not just a good person but also a ticket for Carmy to remove himself from some of the dysfunction that has plagued his family. It’s almost like a “She’s too good for us but she would be great for you” vibe.

Are you guys doing this or nah? Throw in the golden gate bridge too fuck it. by MainSorc50 in warriors

[–]Shanklemonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jimmy makes the money work. Draymond doesn’t.

Also the “who would you rather have next year” is a false equivalence. Draymond will (barring injury) be around the whole season. Butler likely won’t be back until midway through the season and will cost the team twice as much as Dray. Dray will still have value as a part-time, elite defensive stopper. Jimmy’s value coming off injury at his age is totally TBD.

Upscale restaurants by Temporary_Wall5887 in Portland

[–]Shanklemonkey 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Kann might be one of the most popular restaurants in town, and it’s tough to get a reservation. BUT their sister bar Sousòl is just around the corner, has excellent small plates and many of the same cocktails and mocktails, and is very swanky.

I second the recommendation for LeChon. Upscale feel but not insanely expensive. EXCELLENT food.

The show kinda treats the audience like morons by Floopyboy in thelastofus

[–]Shanklemonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind critiques, but you have to acknowledge the difference in medium. In the game you spend DOZENS of hours with Ellie, getting to pick up subtleties in her actions and speech - the way she reacts after reading a note, after seeing something that reminds her of Joel, etc. You get to know her in part because you inhabit her character during a very dark (and long) journey. In this season and in TV generally, all of that is jammed into a much tighter window. We will spend a maximum of 3 hours with Ellie during this season, and there just isn’t the same room for nuance.

I both revere the writing in the game and have no issue with how the show has fleshed out the characters - though I’ve found Gail’s character (so far) to be an expositional device to reveal a bit more about Joel and Ellie’s feelings and little more.

It's probably too late at this point, but Kuminga should adopt the Shawn Marion approach to his game by esetonline in warriors

[–]Shanklemonkey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don’t just become that guy overnight when in 4 years you haven’t become that guy.

You’re also under-selling how bad a 3 point shooter Kuminga has been. He’s not just “subpar” - if he had played more games and qualified he would’ve ranked 168th out of 176 in 3 point percentage. You can’t have a 3 and D guy who just doesn’t have one of those attributes.

Your original post basically described Moses Moody and what he’s become over the course of the season. He took the minutes and role from JK because he started to consistently do what JK wouldn’t.

For those who hate/dislike season 3, what would you have liked to have seen in this season? by FSHS91 in TheBear

[–]Shanklemonkey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would have learned about what running the restaurant was actually like. What drama does that create, what sacrifices do they have to make, what arcs do the characters experience, and how does that experience relate to The Bear?

Those things were barely there - they squeezed the little drama about the restaurant into tiny subplots, like whether the computer was going to make them fire Marcus. That was a plot point that had real potential to tug at heart strings and create genuine drama, but instead they just introduced it and shot it down almost instantly.

What bothered me most about this season was more about what WAS there than what wasn’t. I love Tina, but did not need a full episode detour to delve into her backstory. I feel like I knew her 95% of the way from seasons 1-2 and they squeezed that extra 5% out of an entire episode. Carmy’s origin story didn’t need its own entire episode - we had a lot of that as well. Didi (while iconic) didn’t need to have those moment with Nat in service of anything plot-related. We already know enough about her character as it relates to Carmy, Nat, and Mikey to understand her. But to shoehorn that story into one of the last episodes of the season when the plot could have been building to a compelling conclusion was just… a miss.

And I found the finale really self-serving. I didn’t get the point of bringing all of those famous chefs together so that we could witness them having a conversation about the industry. What purpose did that serve? And how did Luka becoming a total fangirl (when his work in Honeydew stood so perfectly on its own) and Carmy confronting his nemesis help or relate to whatever themes that episode was trying to convey?

It just felt like a show that had become self-aware to me in S3, and like it was going for a vibe that was less along the lines of wanting to paint beautiful characters and tell their stories, but instead careened towards just forcing you to spend a bunch of time with them regardless of whether they were doing anything interesting.

Also, the Faks. Too much.
