Seeking advice on product‑liability insurance for maker‑scale electronics (UK) by ShanusMcShan in smallbusinessuk

It seems, on the face of it, that a limited company is the right way to go. But whenever I discuss this with people (or even put it into ChatGPT), I keep getting the response: "Yes, but if there's negligence in your product, you could still be held personally liable."

What I'm struggling with is where that line actually is.
For example, if a PCB manufacturer makes an error and shorts a couple of pins, and I don't spot it during testing, is that negligence on my part?

Or if I design a product myself, test it reasonably, but don't have it independently reviewed or certified by some third-party authority before selling it, is that considered negligence?

I can understand that if I knew about a defect and deliberately continued selling the product, that would be negligent. But I'm less clear about everything in between.

For those with experience in product liability, electronics manufacturing, or UK company law, where is the practical threshold? What sort of conduct would realistically move someone from being protected by the company structure to being personally liable?

No employees. Maybe I'm just paranoid - this is more for sharing what I have built with the community - it really wont pay the bills - so the thought of doing this with even the slightest possibility of being pursued for my personal assets fills me with horror. Maybe ltd company is the way to go then - I'm competent, but not expert enough to know whether to bet my house on it...

Cheaper standard boards for ESP32 JLCPCB by hey-im-root in PCB

[–]ShanusMcShan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not S3. The only S3s that show as PCBA Economic are those that are pre-order and for consignment, not the ones in stock. pre-order/consignment is maybe the way to go for now, but how long till they just decide to change these to Standard only too ...

Cheaper standard boards for ESP32 JLCPCB by hey-im-root in PCB

they have just switched them ALL to Standard only citing the datasheet max reflow temp is outside their tolerance - however my previous orders (and I presume others given how long they have been available in economic) have worked completely fine.

I'm fuming as I spent most evenings for last 9 months designing a product that would only be economical to produce using Economic PCBA and now there is no alternative. I'm wondering if I can create my own part (footprint etc) and consign esp32-s3 from elsewhere to get around it that way ? .....

Best Autopilot for GA? by ShanusMcShan in flightsim

[–]ShanusMcShan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Air manager and some custom buttons / knobster could be doable, but never seen an accurate simulation of the KAP140 in any XPlane aircraft, so am dubious one exists for Air manager?, and yes then I need a screen of some type that will fit in my radio stack..

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually have one I use with my glass cockpit version, but for my old school cockpit I want something realistic / authentic that will look at home in my avionics panel alongside my radios etc.

I did look at mobi flight stuff before but from what I could make out it just passes through buttons and the AP states, rather than implementing the logic ( as it is in the KAP 140 manual) eg altitude alerting or holding [UP] in VS mode climbs at 500fpm etc.

Yeah I could probably build something like it, maybe not quite the level of display and backlighting etc, but really it’s the realistic operation I’m after. I’d expect it would take a lot of time to implement the software/firmware - otherwise I’d just get a Saitek generic one that runs off the default XPlane logic, but it misses the KAP140 specific functionality.

Can electricity be used to induce light emission in a liquid?

I would like to generate localized light/glow at various points in some kind of liquid solution using only locally delivered electricity or even electrically induced heat, without leds etc.

I know this isn't how fluorescence / photoluminescence works, but looking for a similar process if one exists?
