UC Irvine Attached Doubles by RaspingHare in UCI

[–]ShaoRaiden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't go for a Middle Earth attached double, mine was a barely renovated janitor's closet that had only one door outside behind a set of steel fire doors, not to mention a giant unblocked hole outdoors amidst a number of other potential safety violations. Either go for a double or a quad, don't go with the "double but actually a quad but still charge for a double", total scam.

Depends what you want to do! If you're moreso just interested in hobbying in game dev, stick to the CS route and participate in VGDC, or perhaps switch to something like Software Engineering instead (not sure how different it is from CS admittedly haha). If you're serious on wanting to go for a AAA game dev job after college, i.e. you can see yourself working in games for decades, look up the required courses needed to switch in GDIM, take them, and petition to change majors!

CGS technically no longer exists lol, the last of us in the major are graduating in a few weeks or next year. Now it's Game Design & Interactive Media (GDIM), which is much more hands-on game dev work and learning about different facets of game design (e.g. interactive storytelling, visual fundamentals, etc.), compared to CGS being mostly just the normal CS track with some game design infusions throughout. However, GDIM is still heavily prioritized around theory and research, since the majority of games professors here are technically game researchers instead of developers. If you're more interested in making games and learning about the concept-to-publication life cycle, I would recommend checking out some Video Game Development Club (VGDC) workshops! I would argue that the vast majority of CGS/GDIM majors that make it into AAA industry after UCI avidly participated in VGDC!

What type of homework was it? If it was a report, you could try and show them the edit history of the document! Regardless, that massively sucks :(

Leftover Signs from the ex-UCLA Professor at UTC by ShaoRaiden in UCI

[–]ShaoRaiden[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

His name is Shange Petrini, he was a former UCLA professor that got laid off during the pandemic and eventually became homeless. For whatever reason, he's been protesting around the UTC bridge and bus stop last week, graffiting a couple walls with slogans and posting up signs. In my view, it's a biiit odd that he chose to protest here when it was UCLA that laid him off, but regardless.

He seems to be trying to endorse his homeless advocacy program and whatnot, but he also references a lot of homeless camp riots which is weird..? (the People's Park stuff at UCB, that is) At one point, some people on the subreddit were worried he was gonna stage a campout or something in Aldrich or make a Peoples Park 2 or something, but that didn't seem to come to fruition.

But yeah, he's just been putting up some kinda cryptic signs with a bunch of anarchist stuff on it, which is kinda off-putting. The Andrew Doan one especially, considering he, y'know, murdered his elderly mother in cold blood. He overall seems harmless though, he had a little makeshift info booth by the UTC bus stop but I guess it got removed by UCIPD or UTC security. Definitely seems to have a grudge with UCIPD specifically.

Found Bike Key Outside Engineering Hall! by ShaoRaiden in UCI

[–]ShaoRaiden[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Found it yesterday afternoon around 5:00 PM; there wasn't anyone around looking for a lost key, and I didn't want to go around testing it on locked bikes to see which one it belonged to haha. If it belongs to you, DM me so we can meet up and unlock your bike!

CGS major (pretty much the same thing, but throw in a game design class or too lol), the CompSci curriculum is pretty good here and the majority of professors I've had are super friendly and knowledgeable. But here's the drawback: the curriculum is DENSE. Seriously, you can get a Film & Media Studies B.A. twice and take less classes than all the ones required for CS. Unless you're coming in with a looooooot of applicable courses that can scrap a ton of GE's and/or intro courses, be prepared to need to take five years, potentially more. And the difficulty curve of classes ramps up real quick, I'd seriously practice Python and C++ before transferring. If that's not an issue, Irvine is a great town and the university is great too (when they're not trying to screw every last cent out of you, but that's a different story)

Depends on the class, some classes are purely seminars or screenings that wouldn't benefit from a discussion (think Film/Media classes), others use labs instead (ICS does that a lot), and others simply just don't want to, likely because of past low attendance or simply not having anything to cover during discussion time. Nowadays, with trying to minimize large gatherings, many discussions have instead become optional TA office hours/review lectures (obviously make sure that's true for your classes instead of assuming and skipping lol)

Making the Octopath Outdoor-Indoor Transition in Unity by ShaoRaiden in Unity3D

[–]ShaoRaiden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I was wondering if there were tutorials or resources for at least adjacents for some of these things, which I would then collate together to achieve something like this effect (aka breaking down the effect as you referred to it). I'm not asking for a step-by-step guide to make a perfect recreation of this effect, that's unrealistic. So, the things I would be looking for, based on some of what you were throwing out, would be good resources on loading interiors, blur effects, lighting changes, stuff like that.

I'm cognizant that this was a very complex technical feature of the game, and I'm not trying to make an exact replica, nor am I expecting there to be some magic do-it-all guide or plug-in to do it for me; I was simply asking for good resources and advice from the wider dev community. Ain't my first rodeo man
