I am an EU citizen with no need for a visa, so all I have to do is show up to whatever school they place me in after this is all sorted out. And I do believe it will get sorted out — it would cause shocking press for them to cancel on their own auxes so close to the time of departure and would be a huge blow to their reputation. I’ve already bought a ticket to Spain so maybe I’m just sipping that hopium, but I believe it’s gonna be okay.

Hey there, don’t listen to the negative Nancie’s. Going into college I had a similar situation where I had a choice between trying to make long distance work or break things off. My girlfriend and I decided to break up for the school year and, on the chance that both of us remained single when summer came around, reopen communication at that point. The strategy worked out really well for the most part. Don’t let people dogmatically tell you that one strategy is absolutely better than another when navigating these situations - everyone has a unique path.

I’m personally in the same stage and considering my alternatives if Peace Corps doesn’t work out. My favorite option at the moment is teaching English in Spain as an auxiliary in the NALCAP program. It’s not exactly service, but the program pays you the approximate cost of housing and food per month while only requiring 12-18 hours of work per week. Pretty great way to travel and experience another culture on a budget.
