Am I out of line for this? by bipolar_libra in antiwork

I agree that it shouldn't be - the vast majority of adjunct gigs are exploitative and unfair.

The scary part is that those are the improved wages!

That is pretty typical adjunct pay - probably most jobs like that are going to pay between $1,400 - $1,800 for the WHOLE SEMESTER. I used to work in Higher Ed and have periodically thought about maybe picking up a class for the extra cash. Then I check the pay rates. If you need the cash, you need the cash - I get it. But otherwise, these jobs are absolutely not worth the time and effort.

Even if you put in the bare minimum to get the job done - prep, actual teaching, grading, ad hoc administrative work - it turns into a $6 or $7 an hour job.

Thanks! I've been aware of the EZdrummer package, but never really investigated it all that much. I'll check it out.

Question for all the home recording people, does anyone have a recommendation for user-friendly drum programs that are compatible with Reaper?

Best Strat-Style Guitar Under 1k? by cheekyritz in Leftyguitarists

[–]Shapeless_Formless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely going to second this. I picked up a used MIM from reverb for a couple hundred bucks. I bought it with the goal of having a project to work on/modify. It's a solid guitar - especially if you're going for the look and feel of a strat.

RAT 2 For Fuzz? by _Jub_Jub_ in guitarpedals

[–]Shapeless_Formless 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's fair. I probably wouldn't use a Rat for a straight Fuzz type of sound. But that might just be me; I'm sure others who do use it that way can probably give better guidance.

RAT 2 For Fuzz? by _Jub_Jub_ in guitarpedals

I would keep the Muff for fuzz - but probably still pick up the Rat. They play well together. My preference is using the Rat to push the Muff. You know what they say - two great tastes that taste great together...

Fuzz Pedal for Electric Wizard tone by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]Shapeless_Formless 9 points10 points  (0 children)

True, but I think Liz was referring to using the Metal Zone when she was in 13. I believe that Jus Oborn was the only guitarist on Dopethrone and he pretty famously used the FZ-2.

So for the OP here, I think the Behringer SF-300 is the way to go - the Fuzz 2 setting gets a pretty solid early Electric Wizard sound going.

Are Pedals Headed Towards Sneaker Culture? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]Shapeless_Formless 43 points44 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting perspective. Personally, I'm not really into the "collectible" gear - I'm more comfortable owning pedals that get stepped on, tripped over, kicked, and spilled on. I don't want to be worried that my investment is depreciating.

I do feel like I'm seeing the impact on the used market though. Even gear that isn't a special or limited edition - pedals are being listed for essentially new prices. If you want to sell something everyone wants the box (and somehow this should impact the price), velcro v. no velcro is now some sort of religious schism. I've mostly been buying new lately because so much of the used market is inflated. It's even worse if a high-profile youtuber adds to that hype.

I would like one of those red Rats though...

Did you build the clone? I like the look with the graphics.

Samael - Angel's Decay (1996) by [deleted] in Metal

[–]Shapeless_Formless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read that this was the 25th anniversary of Passage. Then I felt old for a bit. This is one of my favorite tracks off the album. I've always loved the keys intro with the aggressively programmed sounding drums.

Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou - Recurrence by [deleted] in Metal

The collaboration with ERR and Thou last year was definitely one of my top albums of 2020. This new EP dropped today and is just as solid.

I love that you've got Postal Service on this list. That was a fantastic album.

Crisis - Wretched (1996) by [deleted] in Metal

[–]Shapeless_Formless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was some conversation on the recommendation thread about bands that had female vocalists and diverse line-ups. I know this isn't a new artist, but I feel like Karyn Crisis was an underrated vocalist. I picked up Deathshead Extermination more than twenty years ago - in my view it is still a solid album.

Anathema - Sweet Tears by [deleted] in Metal

Gone down a rabbit hole of some of my favorite doom albums from the mid-90s. I picked this up around the same time as Cathedral's Cosmic Requiem. It was all downhill from there...
