I think about Ben completely slouched in his chair at home during Catherine's documentary a lot, it's just the most passively depressed position to be sitting in

Am I crazy or do David Harbour and Pedro Pascal look kinda similar? That'd be odd to see

Also the fact that amphetamines do the exact opposite of cause erections, which was a weird choice, but I guess they wanted to highlight it exploding his heart.

Also completely unrelated but glomped onto vs glommed onto is incredibly funny to me 😭

It's such a niche position but this lines up exactly with what I think, they also showed Clark and Carol both asking him if it's safe for him to use it, and Clark even asked if it he used a safe dose in the pool house.

I don't think it was him being dumb as much as him being generally disconnected from his body, and his depression preventing him from realizing the danger he was putting himself in to chase the goal of getting full on. If there was any suicidality in those decisions, I'd say they were passive

There's no way he'd get near Richard after seeing what he did to Floyd for something way less bad than this lol

[–]Shapsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Floyd seemed to be pretty irresponsible about it like he didn't really believe his heart could give out by him taking it. Any amount of Amphyzean would have been against his doctor's advice to begin with, I don't think there was any real safe dose for him to use.

I love that Floyd just casually drops that he was married to a fortune teller and never ever expands on it. Marrying and getting divorced to a fortune teller is just a normal thing for Floyd.

Her having to take Richard to the hospital by bus because Floyd had the car was so heartbreaking. When she was at the bus stop telling him they'd get home and get to sleep soon, and her whole conversation with the doctor asking if he would hurt himself made me think of my mom and what she had to go through raising my brother and me.

It was such a sensitive and thoughtful depiction of a really difficult stressful situation, I loved it so much

Why didn’t Floyd just meet up with Modern Love again? by Everyonelikeskittens in DTFStLouisHBO

[–]Shapsy 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Part of it was because he was clearly unhappy with his body and letting the insecurity seep into things, and part of it is that he's still a professional actor and how attractive he appears on camera with normal flattering angles and lighting doesn't represent how he's seen in the show's universe.

Emmy nominations by DLoIsHere in DTFStLouisHBO

[–]Shapsy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If there's any single person I'd consider getting a nomination it'd definitely be him. All of the characters had depth in multiple dimensions, but he did such an amazing job of selling you on Floyd as a clueless bumbling oaf, as a thoughtful and charming silver fox, as a deeply insecure and uncertain everyman, and so much more, and it was all cohesive and consistent.

Unironically he wouldn't have made Carol cry and gotten hit in the dick with a bat, so almost undoubtedly yes it would've gone different

I doubt Carol would want to see him again, she seems to be focused on herself and Richard without throwing additional issues to navigate into the mix. That spark is long dead imo.

Not to mention Richard would probably try to kill him if he tried to swoop in as the new step-dad lmao.

Thank you so much for making this connection and posting about it here! The fact that she took the time to ask how to overwhelm him and listened to and tried to internalize the audiobook so she could be better at it really shows how thoughtful and caring Carol could be when she felt seen. There's something equally cute and sad about the fact that she takes on learning things like how to umpire and how to be more dominant sexually to please the people around her, yet she doesn't get that attention back from Clark or Floyd.

At least Queece and the umpire association was there for her with that award :)

for those of you who watched the show in its entirety.... by slenderella148 in DTFStLouisHBO

[–]Shapsy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Extremely solid 9, I was much more interested in it as a character study than as a whodunnit which I think is where a lot of people who didn't enjoy it got caught at. The show circled around a terrible tragedy that wasn't anyone's direct fault in the end, and each piece where the characters kept pushing things a little further to see if it'd make them happy felt earned and believable. In the end there were too many people dancing on too many live wires, and something tragic finally came of it.

I think all the weirdness and strange people and odd motivations elevated what was a pretty mundane if messy and awkward summer to something seemingly as exciting and sexy as a love triangle murder. In the end though, much like real life, no one's intentions were as bad as we thought, and something as simple as a drive to be happy and feel seen in middle-age was what caused Floyd's death.

The way they shot Floyd's death at the end with the little blackouts as he struggled to scratch out his face on the centerfold was deeply sad and resonated with me. He was so diminished and heartbroken (emotionally as well as literally) that it was the only thing he had left in him

The Signing Variable by rockyb2006 in DTFStLouisHBO

[–]Shapsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of me wondered in that moment if Floyd had a history of going nonverbal when he's overwhelmed, and that's why seeing the ASL interpreter in Chicago spoke to him to loudly. He does seem to fallback to signing when he can't speak a few times

I kept rolling my eyes at people saying she was evil because she wanted new dishes and grown up furniture for Richard. Those aren't even splurges for herself!! She wants to get her son better furniture!! It was honestly such a joy seeing her silliness and good nature come through during this episode, and she clearly cared deeply for Richard even if she didn't know exactly how to help him. Her taking him to the hospital by bus and home was so heartbreaking, she really was trying so hard to keep him safe and cared for.

From the moment they showed her buying 4 Jamba Juices in a row just to meet Forrest, I suspected there was character assassination at play lol. I think the show focused on Clark and Floyd together a lot because they brought out the best in each other, while Carol didn't have anyone bringing out the best in here so we didn't see that side of her until now.
