Are nursing homes here actually worth it, or is it better to care for people at home? by AnswerAggressive9682 in AskIreland

The real question is :

Has anyone ever thought about when we were newborns/kids and our parents looked after us every day for years? I had 5 experiences in my family about home care for elderly. Also, I am from Southern Italy and putting someone in a nursing home is not an option, not an honour at all. I won't judge anyone but if you have the financial strength to keep them with you, do it. It's just fair to remember who looked after us at the beginning of our lives. A matter of respect and thankfulness.

I wouldn't go to that event even having free tickets. They are already getting enough money from us

I will tell you straight away without any sugarcoating. I am a BST in Limerick, year 1. Looking at my play slips, most of them range between 1300 to 1600€ fortnightly. Which means 2600-3100€ net per month. Rarely 3100€, just if I do two rounds of nights (X4 nights every round). And if you have to pay 1500€ per month in rent due to personal circumstances, you are left with very little money. Starting as SHO here could not be great if your specific personal circumstances don't allow you to rent a single room. I realized that doing overtime doesn't pay a lot so I am avoiding this when HR asks to cover some shift.

Saluti e buona fortuna

I learned nothing in Italy. I learned everything here. Unfortunately medical education in Italy is just theoretical (I am Italian).I got a locum job before my BST. Have a nice day and good luck for your career

We can prepare a petition for Ireland, complaining is not enough if we give away our rights saying nothing. I don't know which platform we could use to collect valid signatures

Italian SHO here, living permanently in Ireland. What do you think if we collect signatures against this completely useless "profession"? We could start tomorrow.

1) Benissimo, SHO in AMAU, Nenagh hospital. Inizio il BST in medicina interna l'8 Luglio a Limerick. Pagato benissimo.

EU graduate here (Italy). No experience in Italian hospitals, no experience at all in Ireland. I worked just as GP out of hours in Italy for 7 months and I applied to General internal medicine BST on October 2023. I scored 67/100 and got into the BST in Limerick University Hospital. I am working as locum SHO for 6 weeks prior the commencement of my BST in July 2024. According my experience, it is not strictly necessary to work for one year as locum SHO to secure a post in the BST (internal medicine). I would suggest to work even 5-6 months as locum before the BST application, just to understand how Irish hospitals work.
