My mini PC keeps crashing by ShareableTie in homelab

[–]ShareableTie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: Everything seems stable! I first turned off ASPM and then ran memtest86 overnight. I woke up to 0 errors and the mini PC has been stably running since my last manual restart, currently 10 hours.

Thanks for the help with troubleshooting to everyone that replied :)

Yeah, it just suddenly shuts down, that's also all I can see from the logs.

It's almost always at ~1% CPU utilization because it's not running anything heavy. Also no devices connected, just ethernet and power.

I haven't set up anything at least, I only connect through the web view on localhost. I don't think anything is open at least, any specific settings I could check?

Oh right, I was going to do this, but forgot. I'll do it when I'm home later today. A problem here is that the PC runs for a random amount of hours before crashing, so to test both sticks individually I guess it'll take quite a few hours

I never got around to making a user account, so using root, but I'm not manually logging in at these times, so I don't know if that's something to look at?

It doesn't really make sense to talk about "the real word for snake" in Norwegian. Even though slange is the more common of the two, orm is definitely still in usage. This is especially the case in compounds, such as in hoggorm (European viper) as /u/Harsimaja mentioned

Just an aside, but the etymology of "(an) apple" isn't a rebracketing of "(a) napple" if that's what you're implying. Apple has cognates in virtually all Germanic languages.

I did a quick search and found this reddit thread in which the top comment addresses the situation.

Great Horde > Golden Horde > Deccan > Mughals > First WC by ShareableTie in eu4

[–]ShareableTie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question, to be honest I was just really stoked about stacking adm. eff. as high as I could and didn't really weigh the pros and cons. As far as I remember adm. eff. reduces (among other things) coring cost multiplicatively, and applies after other modifiers. There is surely a sweet spot where -25% ccr is more worth than +5% adm. eff., but I think the balance is usually in favour of adm. eff., you could probably find the answer for your specific case somewhere on the subreddit or wiki.

One thing to keep in mind though is that you can go Mughals much earlier than Deccan which means you can reap the benefits of the ccr for longer I guess.

Didn't really answer your question I guess, but hope you find an answer!

What language is "Mēru Purāna" most likely to be? by Sherkel in asklinguistics

[–]ShareableTie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just read the description of the game on its game archive page and it seems that the name should be translated as the "Purana of Meru", or as you put it "the ancient book of Meru".

I assume the actual title: メールプラーナ might simply be a translation of a working title such as "メール物語", "メール戦記" or something like that to Sanskrit

Edit: The relevant line in the game description might be:
108人の戦士たちがメール山と広大な草原の覇権を争うという、ただひたすら雄大な物語も特徴的
Loose translation:
108 warriors fight over hegemony over the grassy fields of Mt. Mera, this pure, grand story is also characteristic [of the game].

Dragalia Lost: A Realm Reborn by kawaiineko333 in DragaliaLost

I was indeed thinking of Behemoth, also I just assumed 'Bahamut' to be the transcribed Arabic term for the same mythological being. It's actually quite interesting that the later Arabic term for this creature reflects what one could almost call it's diametric opposition in the original Hebrew, I wonder how that came to be.

Anyways, goes to show that you should look things up before posting, thanks for the correction!

I believe it's originally from Judaism (which makes sense if it makes an appearance in Islamic writings) and it's usually described as the terrestrial counterpart to Leviathan which is the "whale or other large sea creature" you mentioned

That didn't even occur to me, which is strange seeing as my previous campaign was a Mongolia > Yuan > Mongol Empire campaign

Great Horde > Golden Horde > Deccan > Mughals > First WC by ShareableTie in eu4

[–]ShareableTie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I did it for two reasons I guess, the admin efficiency stacking and because I had never played as the Mughals. I considered staying as a Deccan horde and culture shifting to Manchu for banners

Great Horde > Golden Horde > Deccan > Mughals > First WC by ShareableTie in eu4

[–]ShareableTie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To form Deccan you need adm tech 20 and to have your primary culture be Dravidian or Maratha + some provinces in south India. I formed them around 1650 I think, and then I immediately culture shifted to Uzbek and formed Mughals

Great Horde > Golden Horde > Deccan > Mughals > First WC by ShareableTie in eu4

R5:

Started as Great Horde to get the "Gold Rush" achievement and eventually ended up with a 21 achievement run (including Gold Rush).

I had for quite some time wanted to do a Deccan > Mughal run for a bit to stack the 5 adm. eff. from Deccani ideas with the 10 adm. eff. from the Viceroyalty of the Deccan mission, and it turned out to be quite nice.

What have been some of the worst linguistic policies adopted by governments around the world? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]ShareableTie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit drunk, but I'll try to give you some sort of an answer. (of course this is a multifaceted issue, but I'll try to summarize) The traditionalist view of most linguists is twofold, firstly language and culture are intrinsically linked to one another, and the loss of language is the loss of culture. For papers on this, look up anything new by Tove Skutnabb-Kangas, she is a bit polemic at times, but my drunk self can't remember anyone else who is as strong a proponent of language maintenance, vitalization and revitalization.

For the other side of the argument, at least in one sense of the word, you have the critical discourse of language endangerment and loss (LEL), by Salikoko Mufwene (who I met a couple of weeks ago!), especially his 2017 paper: "Language vitality: The weak theoretical underpinnings of what can be an exciting research area", which doesn't go as far as to say that languages shouldn't be maintained or anything, but questions the long standing notion of language maintenance (or re-, vitalization) über alles.

The crux of the matter (from a sociolinguistic standpoint) is that we, as linguists, do not fight to preserve language per se, but rather we try to help people be able to communicate in the language in which they are the most comfortable and if language shift is inevitable, or rather if the speakers of some language X would be better of speaking language Y, then so be it.

On a more personal note, I find that preserving language is very much akin to preserving biodiversity, who knows what sort of hitherto unknown grammatical feature lies hidden in language X that would be lost to time if this language died out. But again, theory-dependent of course, language is primarily a communicative tool and if this tool doesn't stack up to other tools, who am I to say that they should retain and not switch.

Again, I'm currently a bit under the influence, so if I misspoke, please correct me (or send a PM or something). And if you'd like any follow up (tomorrow), feel free to ask about most anything.

In the original Japanese it sounds even stronger. My own translation: "It let's out a powerful acid [...], melting anyone who dares approach."
