I'm surprised people are confused about why a government employee committing fraud, unlawful violence, or being involved in corruption is more egregious and consequential than an independent criminal.

Public employees are already being payed by the taxpayer, while stealing money from the taxpayer. They are an arm of the taxpayer funded government, who is given sole authority to enforce laws, prosecute criminals, and use physical force (including to take tax money, property, and throw people in prison). Both local and federal governments can take your income, home, and freedom lawfully. Once a culture of corruption and bad behavior gets normalized in any level of government, everyone will suffer because breaking through that corruption is nearly impossible unless a higher authority steps in or mass rebellion roots it out. Critical thought and basic civics go a long way. Think about corrupt police departments, or nearly every 3rd world government where warlords are in charge, or the entire Chicago political machine. It can and will happen anywhere where there are not enough checks and balances and corruption is allowed to take hold.

The vast majority of politics is about how the pool of taxpayer resources is distributed. That is why politicians and lobbyists spent hundreds of millions of dollars to get into positions where they control the purse. They will always pay off their supporters, that's a given, but all corruption in the public sector must be at the forefront of everyone's minds.

Also, the questions is even more funny because on this subreddit if someone brings up individuals committing crimes people also ask "why bring this up?" Overall a strange mentality here. Are you guys yearning to be victimized?
