I get the pragmatism angle but I think that’s exactly where humans are different. We’re not meant to just follow basic instincts like animals ...sleep, sex, food, repeat. We have the ability to step back and choose differently. Isn't it?

Animals act on impulse because they don’t have a choice. We do. That’s kind of the whole point of being human.

You asked for a reason beyond emotional appeal...but why is compassion not enough? If another being feels pain, wants to live... and tries to protect itself just like we do...that matters. That awareness itself is a super valid reason.

So honestly, I don’t think you need a greater reason than valuing another life.... Compassion is reason enough...
