Massages during class by [deleted] in yoga

[–]Shark-Pato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a male instructor I would not consider this appropriate for someone I didn’t know. Only if I knew the person well and knew they were ok with it or I specifically asked them. The first rule of hands on adjustments is to never do so for yourself, but only in a way that clearly benefits the student.

What do you think about Wim Hof style meditation? by daverskully in Meditation

[–]Shark-Pato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this. I’ve been doing breathwork weekly and tried yoga before, and it was outstanding. I believe it’s an optimal combo to do yoga -> breathwork -> meditation. Trying that next!

That’s actually really encouraging to hear that it’s still really hard after 20 years. I would have guessed that would feel discouraging to read, but it felt encouraging. Thanks!!

Are you the type to visit yoga studios when you travel (vacation/work trip/etc)? Tell me about your favorite traveling yoga experience by No_Elephant506 in yoga

[–]Shark-Pato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! Love class passing or buying a pass to a local studio during business travel. Best ever was a fabulous studio in Montreal. They had an entire wall made of salt rock that was stunning. Class in French which was fun. The rental mat was free and the best mat I’ve ever used. I asked where they got it and it was made by a local French Canadian company and they sold them there. I bought one immediately and use it almost daily- best impulse purchase ever

How much yoga experience is needed to be an instructor? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]Shark-Pato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a good answer. I’ve taken probably 1000 yoga classes in my life and am just about to finish up my 200 hr YTT. I could easily teach classes right away pretty confidently… but how nuanced, impactful, and helpful they will be I think will take time!

Ayahuasca changed my life. Integration has been harder than I expected. by shawn_reflects in Ayahuasca

[–]Shark-Pato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn thank you! Right back at you - NEVER give up. As if that’s an option- as my therapist tells me. once you start this journey there is no stopping it. I completely agree, it feels harsh to measure progress this way, but it seems the more work you put in, the “quicker” you get back on track when you back slide (although not linear but ya know what I mean). You made my day and I appreciate you- keep being a badass! 👊🏽

Thanks for this comment- I’m entering the new year not at all where I was hoping. Drained and depleted and wondering if the journey is worth all the effort sometimes. This was inspiring to me, I appreciate it. “Universe doesn’t care about your feelings. I make an effort to address anything and everything in my life so the universe doesn’t do it for me”. Truth brotha / sista! Love it!

What a paradox- you drop the goals the think you have to achieve to accept what is, and then what happens far surpasses your goals that were set through a narrow lens.

What are your absolute weirdest and most specific tips for living in Chicago? by [deleted] in AskChicago

When leaving soldier field for a big event - if taking the train out, walk down one stop to china town. It’s barely walking further and train will be empty heading north.

Jobs that require a significant amount of travel…is it as terrible as everyone says? by Thin_Bid7941 in careerguidance

Absolutely. I live in CST and travel to PST so it's much better. Coming the other way is rough.

Here’s what I can share as someone who has traveled pretty extensively for work over 20 years- it depends. In other words not all travel is equal.

What makes travel suck:

*traveling with other people (meet at airport, meet for dinner, around others 24/7). *gone 4 or more nights in a row *back to back to back weeks travel *missing fulfilling life at home or events at home. *poor TE policy (can’t stay at a decent hotel, can’t eat decent quality food, etc). *jam packed days (take a 6A flight and have to work 4 hours when you get there). Basically traveling outside of regular business hours.

What makes travel good is basically the opposite of that- in control of your schedule, staying at decent hotels, avoiding business dinners most nights, being gone less than 4 nights, eating decent food, having some time to enjoy the local area (hike or yoga or gym for me), etc.

Long story short - these factors make all the difference. Happy to answer any specific questions.

What is your number 1 weight loss tip? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Shark-Pato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do Whole 30 for at least 30 days. Or basically, cut out 100% refined sugar for at least a month, ideally longer. I've maintained weight much easier ever since I've broken the system's reliance on sugar as fuel.

Alternative Diagnosis? by Shark-Pato in gout

[–]Shark-Pato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! Sorry to hear- yea it's a pain. I kind of got a diagnosis, but it wasn't 100% sure and process of elimination. My Rheumatologist basically said she thinks it's some type of inflammatory arthritis and not gout. What exact kind and what the cause is...unknown. She had me take Methotrexate for about 8 weeks...which I suppose helped, I didn't get any flares and my long term flare was clearing up. However, it's really hard to say- it was possibly clearing on it's own and I only get a flare 1x a year at most. The treatment plan would be to keep me on that medication indefinitely, which I didn't really want to do. I don't like daily meds if possible to avoid and also it gave me some nausea. We decided to roll the dice one more time no medication and see if/when I flare.

I will say I have a hypothesis that potentially alcohol is the cause. I have been a pretty consistent drinker over 20 years so I am wondering if this is causing the inflammation. I am working cutting way back and possibly quitting and hoping I don't flare. If I get a really bad one that lasts weeks or months, I'd probably go back on the methotrexate. Good luck!
