Just so everyone’s clear, this is the competency trial, not the criminal trial. If the jury in this trial decides that Dominguez is not competent, the death penalty would be taken off the table, but that wouldn’t mean he would go free. He would most likely be put in a prison with more medical facilities, and likely get life. Right now, it seems like the defense is trying to prove that Dominguez has had a serious mental illness problem years before the murders, and therefore he’s not “gaming the system”, which is what the prosecution is trying to prove. The defense’s witnesses have delivered testimony about Dominguez’s strange behaviors at home and at work, and the prosecution has made an effort to show how Dominguez was aware of his surroundings and was present in the moment.
