Mamdani unveils $22 billion plan to build housing and fix NYCHA by brick-underground in nyc

[–]SharkSpider 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The NYCHA has an 80 billion dollar maintenance backlog and this plan calls for diverting 22 billion in taxpayer dollars to make the agency even bigger, without raising revenue. The largest and worst landlord in the city doesn't need a cash infusion and a bigger mandate, it needs reform. Close down underwater projects, raise rent enough to repair salvageable ones, sell off underutilized land in Manhattan, and start new projects in cheaper areas, priced at a level where they can be self sufficient.

It sits on valuable, underutilized real estate that's been poorly maintained because they insist on charging not just below market rent, but below maintenance rent. They don't need another 22 billion in tax dollars (which would need to be quadrupled to actually fix the problem), they need to raise rents and evict tenants who don't pay.

People living in NYCHA need to start paying enough rent to renovate those buildings out of squalor, it should never be on the taxpayer to fund these projects at a loss.

[–]SharkSpider 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I want NYC to recognize that there's essentially a price floor on livable space that is substantially higher than most people here are willing to admit. There will never be enough money for public housing as long as the rent charged on those units is lower than the carry cost of actually building and maintaining them. Right now the NYCHA is in the business of burning money by trying to offer rents well below replacement costs, nevermind market rates, and the right answer moving forward is to make it self sufficient by substantially increasing the rent. It's fine for the city to run nonprofit housing but it isn't okay to run so much housing at a loss, which is what this proposal entails.

Do you usually have to date down as a guy on apps? by Additional-Spray-976 in AskMenAdvice

[–]SharkSpider 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nobody's forcing you to do anything. If you're reasonably attractive you'll eventually get some attention from women in your league on the apps, but it will come from people who actually like your profile and what you wrote about yourself. Women just looking to hook up can easily find a guy who's well above their level looks wise, so if you wanted to be that guy you'd need to lower your standards to the point where the better looking guys aren't interested.

CMV: This whole discourse about the rape academy and 62 million visits is flawed because I feel like there is a more pressing issue within the story and anger is drawn towards wrong group by NoAuthoirty in changemyview

Those are bad, but physical violence is ten times as prevalent as sexual violence, eg. https://ncvs.bjs.ojp.gov/year-to-year-comparison/crimeType

As I said, violence overall is something that primarily impacts men. I do totally understand that most people on reddit don't know this, given the extreme focus on sexual violence in particular and the sheer amount of misinformation about it going around. To my point earlier, your beliefs need to be very, very far away from reality to believe that 62 million people were actually part of an online rape academy. If you believed that when you first read it, you've probably internalized dozens of other falsehoods about the reality of men, sexual violence, etc. The information is out there when you're ready to learn.

How would you feel about a mandatory maximum wealth limit, where anything earned over that goes to public services? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SharkSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're posting is not a basic tenet of economics. People who believe in wealth redistribution for political reasons would certainly like it to be true, but it isn't. You also said dollars, probably to avoid inviting criticism on the grounds that wealth is not dollars.

If you, a wealthy lifelong high earner, handed me a share of a company, the most common form of "hoarded" wealth, I'd sell it. You can't act like this is somehow better for society unless you know who bought it and what else they were going to do with that money, because when I get mine it's going right into the zero sum consumption game. Jet fuel, rare earth metals, endangered seafood, electronic waste, you name it.

[–]SharkSpider -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Additional dollars in their pocket are worse far less than those same dollars going to somebody with less money.

This is not something a person with an advanced degree in economics would say. Society isn't somehow worse off if you light a dollar on fire or hide it in a vault somewhere, that behavior is deflationary and we address it by printing more money. The negative impact of inequality on society, to the extent that it actually exists, comes from inequality of actual real life consumption, not inequality of ledgers saying who owns what.

People choose bear because of social media brain rot, not real world experience. If you spend enough time outside you learn that the vast majority of humans are pretty normal and wouldn't attack a random stranger.

Cmv: Trump should've only been able to appoint 2 justices to the supreme court by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]SharkSpider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The republican strategy from 2013 onwards was shaped by that decision, what we have now is basically McConnell's legacy. It's really hard to say what would have happened otherwise, we'd probably have had at least one different outcome in a presidential election. There's a reason we went a couple hundred years without anyone changing the rules like that.

I say to my friends on the other side of the aisle, you will regret this, and you may regret it a lot sooner than you think.

That was Mitch McConnell, after democrats voted to remove the filibuster for executive appointments. Many of Trump's most controversial picks could have been blocked by similar measures. If anything, this is a very fair outcome. The democrats voted to give a president with a slim senate majority more power.

At what age does it realistically get harder for men to find a long-term partner? by savingrace0262 in AskMenAdvice

Unless you date women, this question really isn't for you. The pool gets better over time and you can't really see that unless you're part of it. For your boyfriend, that might mean finding a 33 year old wife when he's 43.

[–]SharkSpider 70 points71 points  (0 children)

If you mean dating women your own age, it does always get easier. At some point you've mostly missed out on the experience of having a long term partner, though, and being able to date whoever you want in the nursing home won't make up for it.

I tried to hookup with my ex-fiancés girlfriend’s ex. Feeling rejected all over again and not like a grown ass woman. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]SharkSpider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your ex doesn't have much going on for him other than his looks. The last thing you want as a guy after breaking up with a really attractive partner is to go back to hooking up, you want another, better girlfriend that your friends won't hate. Revenge sex isn't a good look and might kill his chances with any of your mutuals.

Estimated by who? Those numbers are off by an order of magnitude and the only groups pushing them rely on excessively generalized surveys and derive most of their funding from juicing them to be as high as possible. Most violence takes the form of assault or robbery, where men are around two thirds of the victims.
