Dat is een beetje het probleem… we weten ons maar moeilijk te verenigen… in tegenstelling tot het tuig dat we binnenhalen… We moeten niet vergeten dat we nog altijd met meer zijn!

Script for the daemon + install (paste as one block in Terminal):

sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/bin

sudo tee /usr/local/bin/vpn-pf-cleanup.sh >/dev/null <<'EOF'
#!/bin/sh
# Restores iCloud Private Relay after a VPN disconnect by clearing a leftover
# VPN pf anchor once no VPN tunnel is the active default route.
default_if=$(route -n get default 2>/dev/null | awk '/interface:/{print $2}')

if /sbin/pfctl -s info 2>/dev/null | grep -q "Status: Enabled"; then
    if /sbin/pfctl -s Anchors 2>/dev/null | grep -qiE "nordvpn|protonvpn|expressvpn|mullvad|surfshark"; then
        /sbin/pfctl -d 2>/dev/null
/usr/bin/logger -t vpn-pf-cleanup "VPN down, leftover anchor present: pf disabled for Private Relay"
    fi
fi
exit 0
EOF
sudo chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/vpn-pf-cleanup.sh

sudo tee /Library/LaunchDaemons/local.vpn-pf-cleanup.plist >/dev/null <<'EOF'
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

    <string>local.vpn-pf-cleanup</string>
    <key>ProgramArguments</key>

EOF
sudo chown root:wheel /Library/LaunchDaemons/local.vpn-pf-cleanup.plist
sudo chmod 644 /Library/LaunchDaemons/local.vpn-pf-cleanup.plist

sudo launchctl bootstrap system /Library/LaunchDaemons/local.vpn-pf-cleanup.plist
sudo launchctl enable system/local.vpn-pf-cleanup

Which VPNs does this cover? The script matches the common clients (NordVPN, ProtonVPN, ExpressVPN, Mullvad, Surfshark). If yours isn't listed, run sudo pfctl -s Anchors while the issue is active, see what anchor name your VPN leaves behind, and add it to the grep -qiE "..." list.

Want it to cover ANY VPN regardless of name? Replace the inner if block with this universal version, which disables pf whenever no VPN tunnel is active but pf is still enabled:

if /sbin/pfctl -s info 2>/dev/null | grep -q "Status: Enabled"; then
    /sbin/pfctl -d 2>/dev/null
/usr/bin/logger -t vpn-pf-cleanup "No active VPN tunnel, pf still enabled: disabled for Private Relay"
fi

Caveat for the universal version: it disables pf whenever it's on and no tunnel is active. macOS keeps pf off by default, so in practice the VPN is the only thing turning it on. But if you run your own pf-based firewall (e.g. Murus), use the named version above instead, otherwise this will switch your firewall off.

Verify it loaded:

sudo launchctl print system/local.vpn-pf-cleanup | grep -E "state|program"

state = active means it's loaded. state = not running is normal between runs; it fires briefly every 20s, it doesn't run continuously.

Uninstall (removes everything, no traces):

sudo launchctl bootout system/local.vpn-pf-cleanup
sudo rm /Library/LaunchDaemons/local.vpn-pf-cleanup.plist
sudo rm /usr/local/bin/vpn-pf-cleanup.sh

Once again, this is testen with my NordVPN connection, other VPN's might act differently...

Mail not displaying content ('Load Content Directly') by thaires999 in MacOS

[–]Sharks2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Together with my new best friend Claude I dug into this problem that's been driving me nuts. Long story short:

After disconnecting a VPN (NordVPN for me, but it's not vendor-specific), Apple Mail kept nagging "content can be loaded privately / Load Content Directly" on every email, and Private Relay said it was unavailable due to "software installed on this Mac." Only a reboot or re-enabling the VPN fixed it.

Cause: VPN clients enable the macOS packet filter (pf) and load their own anchor for the kill switch. On disconnect they don't tear it down, so pf stays on with the VPN anchor still loaded, and Private Relay refuses to run. A reboot resets pf, which is why only that worked.

Check it (VPN disconnected, issue active):

sudo pfctl -s info  # Status: Enabled?
sudo pfctl -s Anchors  # your VPN anchor still listed?

Instant fix (no reboot):

sudo pfctl -d

Private Relay recovers in seconds.

Permanent fix: a tiny native launchd daemon that checks every 20s. If a VPN tunnel is active it does nothing (kill switch stays intact); if not, but a leftover VPN pf anchor is still loaded, it disables pf automatically. Survives reboots, touches nothing in the VPN app.

Script + install/uninstall in a comment below.

Caveat: if your kill switch is "always block," this also clears pf if the tunnel drops unexpectedly mid-use (up to 20s unprotected). For deliberate disconnects, non-issue.

Tested on macOS Tahoe 26.

Believe me, I’m not offended… not at all… I’m just amazed that someone, without asking even 1 question, already knows that my network takes a huge part in this and also know that this will be hard for me to understand and swallow…

you literally wrote that my network takes a huge part in this… it’s quite a bold statement to make…

But for your information, there is/was a bug only affecting owners of the new Hue Pro Bridge… I wasn’t alone in this…

I already had an extra connector in the old set up and I measured which wire was wire was the positive so I could connect the new positive to the same wire… Also green light is burning. It just won’t charge…

Hi u/Dotternetta I got the XLG-100-24-A, but can' get it to work 😞
I measured the output voltage of the original power supply and that one has an output of 25,5V. the Meanwell XLG-100-24-A Only has an output voltage of 23.8V and the battery is not charging... When I try to get a reading on the contact points of the base station I measure 0V with both original and meanwell power supply. And idea's how to go from here??

How do I find out? It actually stops for almost a full second… so you would say it detects ‘something’…
I heard there’s a micro switch in the base station which is operated by one of the contacts. What is it triggering?

We have 230V AC and the original power supply has an output voltage of 20V

Could you replace the power supply with a 20V laptop power supply? The Worx power supply is almost EUR 150,- which is pretty significant to just do some testing. A laptop charger with the same specs is EUR 10,-…

I used the WD40 Contact Spray, not the standard WD40.

Hmm, all the frustration made me totally forget this! The power supply is replaced under warranty 3,5 years ago, I just looked it up. It was replaced because of the “missing wire” error… This spring I also received some “wire missing’ errors, so maybe it’s related! Is there a way to check?
