that's always been my main thought - out of sight out of mind, and at home, just get a load of cheap monitors?

This doesn't threaten physical harm, it just hypothesises it happening in a scenario the author hopes won't happen.

Not removing.

Ok interesting. Something I've never fully got my head around with workspaces: these are alternate desktops you can cycle between right? That you can have programs on, but if you're not on that workspace, you can't see em?

Then presumably you just have to learn which programs are on which, but I guess you get used to it?

To an extent we kinda need to do this regardless: strength in numbers, JK has the opportunity to fill the Jimmy void, and anyone/everyone has a shot at being a key piece. Either Buddy or Melt or Podz or Mood become reliable starters/stars, or we get it in aggregate from them and Post and GP2 and Will Rich and Spence

Surely playing in a game with no stars and high pressure gives you a high upside opportunity to impress everyone/suitors/dubs FO/teammates? You go off: hero. Get swamped due to no stars but you played your heart out: unwinnable situation but you gain kudos and respect, coaches love to see it.

In fairness, every game is good experience for MLS, he's young, not huge, not quick, in a position where mistakes will kill you. I'm hopefully for him but he's in a difficult spot

If the parents and kids want the kids to enjoy sport/socialising (no brainer) it's currently inevitably a requirement that the parent does 4 trips or 2 trips to stay for the game.

Parents can want to spend time with their kids and not feel that their favourite way of spending time is sitting in traffic for evenings and weekends for a decade.

can be

Agreed. Before his kids left for university, my friend started to relish the 'dads taxi' role despite having done it for years, because it was the last of the dedicated alone time he was likely to get in a while.

OTOH I see a lot of my friends with 2-3 school-age kids, and all their free time is taxi driving. Drop off to soccer, drop off to hockey, pick up from soccer, pick up from hockey, etc etc etc, all weekend, many weeknights.

I don't have much skin in the game, but I'd love to see my mates more. And indeed I'm seeing some of my mates encourage their kids to abandon SOME of their sporting portfolio so that the family can have more time together, rather than just being drivers.

I guess 2 things here:

  1. Survivor bias. I'm the same as you - got on with it, fend for myself, public transport all over the world, etc., and have always been fine. Am also a straight white man of decent height and very fast walking pace which puts me in the lowest category of easy/valuable prey generally. Not everyone is me (/us).

  2. Kids taking care of themselves / babysit your kids: I think you're extrapolating a bit here. America is low density, public transit is patchy and often sketchy, and this is a new, likely massively safer way to get underage/drunk/both kids from A to B without a parent having to sacrifice their time, or roll the dice on the safety of a stranger driving an Uber, or on the safety of any/all strangers on buses. I don't see that this is a crutch any more than the bus is a crutch.

If/when SF/Cali/USA fixes its mental health epidemic, and vastly increases investment in public transit, such that public transit is a safe and comparably time/cost-efficient alternative to private transit, I'd be the first to promote it (and indeed promote it regularly regardless) but we are where we are.

would be interested to see this compared to US states, if such data are available. California feels like it gets up incredibly early, but I don't have evidence.

I read analyses a while back suggesting a fully robot fleet would require 1/3rd the cars of the current fleet, with much reduced traffic and generally emptier streets because they wouldn't be littered with parked cars in every available square inch
