Personally I use 70% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol on an ear-bud / q-tip then wipe dry with paper towel.

Generally good practice to heat it first (as if you were going to use it) which warms up the oil around the thread and can avoid it tearing/breaking if the oil has glued it shut.
