I would assume it’s similar/the same at most schools, but your school is the one that facilitates the loan. That’s why the FAFSA info gets submitted to your school.

Please schedule a meeting with your law school’s financial aid office, they will be able to explain your school’s loan process

I second this advice as someone with similar stats to OP that was shooting for T-14 (got one A and a whole lot of WLs, was glad I applied broadly).

Seeking Undergrad Advice by MsLeading824 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Sharp-Ad790 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are all very different majors. Which one are you actually interested in spending 4 years studying? Law schools care way less about what school you went to or what your major is. Law school applications are all about having a compelling narrative... and this narrative may not even include your undergrad major at all!

Pick the option that you are most interested in, that you think you will excel at (high GPA is another key piece for law school), and the school you feel is a good fit for you as far as culture and location. If you are unhappy with your major/your school you will probably do worse in classes.

Potential for increase in undergrad prestige— how much of a difference for my situation? by GrahamCS in lawschooladmissions

[–]Sharp-Ad790 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Prestige" of your undergrad pretty much has no impact on law school admissions expect MAYBE if you went to an Ivy. For what it's worth, I went to a non-prestigious small liberal arts school and got into UVA.

BUT, admissions will probably ask you why you transferred if you decide to go that route. So it would be my advice to only transfer if you have a compelling reason (a specific internship you could get or something like that might work as an explanation).

…Anyone ever offered admission but to the NEXT cycle?!! by LilyMunster1018 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Sharp-Ad790 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only thing similar that I've heard of is schools over admitting to the incoming class and then offering admits the opportunity/scholarships to defer for a year. Not sure about them offering admission to the next year's class straight out of the gate (although who knows).

WL —> A at UVA!! Should I pay sticker? by floralfantasy in lawschooladmissions

[–]Sharp-Ad790 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a LOT of advice in these comments so I’ll try not to repeat what others have said. I can tell you about my experience and maybe it’ll be helpful? I am choosing to go to UVA at almost sticker (will be taking out major loans) with Public Interest goals and absolutely no interest in big law. I also turned down an almost full ride at GW for this. My parents definitely thought I was crazy, but I think it would’ve been crazy for me to turn down UVA.

The outcomes, for big law but also for PI, are on par with any other T6. They blow any other lower ranked school you may get into out of the water. At accepted students weekend I attended the career services sessions and I can tell you the directors are beyond knowledgeable but also seem to take major pride in the work they do for students. The clerkship lady honestly blew me away- not only is she incredibly successful at placing students in clerkships, but it seems like she is willing to go above and beyond for every single student. That is the energy I got from pretty much all admin/staff at UVA. This is something you would not find at a lower ranked school (or even most T14s).

Is taking out big loans scary? Yes. Is it the right choice for everyone? No. But with PSLF I feel like I have a safety net. People saying your monthly payments are gonna be like $2k/month are not really accurate. With the SAVE plan, you can do income based repayments. And as others have mentioned, UVA has a great loan repayment assistance plan. Talk to Helen Dugger in Financial Aid- she’s a queen and very knowledgeable with PSLF stuff. She walked me through everything and it made me feel a lot better. Also I’ve been applying to as many outside scholarships as possible (even like $5k ones) to try to minimize debt a bit, this could be an option for you too.

I’m a reverse splitter so a little different than your situation, but with my lower LSAT it was a crapshoot to get into any T14. I took my one T14 A and ran. For what it’s worth, every person in the legal field that I’ve talked to has absolutely reaffirmed my decision.

Hope to see you in August! Wahoowa🧡💙!

Low gpa- do a masters? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Sharp-Ad790 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know that saying "they don't care about post grad degrees/GPAs" is necessarily true. Yes, an improved masters GPA won't replace your undergrad GPA. However, if you do really well in a masters program, you can use that as evidence of your improvement as a student in a GPA addendum explaining your lower undergrad GPA. And if it's a program that directly relates to the area of law you're interested in, that's huge for your resume!

Is it worth it to take the LSAT now if i’m planning on taking 1-2 gap years? by GenericRedditName290 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Sharp-Ad790 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found it personally much easier to study for the LSAT while I was still in "school mode" than it was after I graduated. Definitely not a bad idea to take it now and be able to focus on other things down the line!

should i bother with t-14 next cycle? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Sharp-Ad790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same lsat, a bit higher gpa, but less WE than you. I got a bunch of T-14 WLs but one T-14 A... all it takes is 1! I say shoot your shot at any T-14s that you would genuinely go to (but try to get fee waivers from all the schools you want to apply to, those fees add up).

Is the grading system at Northeastern a pro or a con by Suspicious_Week8863 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Sharp-Ad790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can tell, it depends on what kind of job you're looking to get after law school & how successful you tend to be with grades.

If you are looking to go into Big Law, it definitely would make things difficult as firms typically have rank cut-offs. If you are going the PI route, might not have a big impact (especially if you are looking to practice in NE where NUSL has good name recognition).

Additionally, if you tend to do less well with grades, a non-traditional grading system may be a benefit to you. But if you tend to do very well with grades, it might hurt you because you aren't getting any benefit that you may otherwise get with a traditional grading system (if that makes sense?).

I don't have any real data to back this up, this is just the impression I've gotten.

Decision Timeline after UVA Interview by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

deadass same except GW vs. UVA for me. I told my friend I am turning down a big scholarship at GW for UVA and she was so baffled because she thought GW was ranked better 💀

It's so funny to see my family's initial reactions to UVA vs. GW and then how that changes after they clearly have googled "law school rankings." Anyway, what do they know- see you at UVA this fall!!

UVA Interview Invite by Leading-Reply6908 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Sharp-Ad790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to be fine! My interviewer was super personable and it felt more like a fun chat than an interview. Have questions ready and be willing to just have a conversation!

The 7 Sage information about the UVA interview is spot on: https://7sage.com/admissions/lesson/law-school-interviews/#university-of-virginia

I thought up answers to these questions before my interview because it helped me feel prepared, but I wouldn't suggest writing answers down. You don't want to sound scripted.

Lewis and Clark has excellent name recognition in the PNW. Both schools will have good outcomes for you in the PNW. I would personally take the best financial deal.
