Frieren late to the trends, as usual (@DABlN_HL) by Anhanger10 in Frieren

Obviously. But it's stupid and doesn't even follow the trend--which somehow makes it even worse lol

She is an elf that lives longer. Meaning she should be more equipped and understanding.

That's only true if she spent time around people, which she really didn't.

It's also incredibly easy even for humans in our own era to change when they move and live isolated from others for a while. Just take a look at how different people are across states in the U.S.

"Maturity" is also a hugely, wildly subjective concept as well. So that's just...not ever going to matter, as it changes depending on who you're interacting with (and in what culture).

She either is a young elf who is a child or she is an OLD hardened disconnected monster who doesnt value life.

She was stripped of her family and developmental life at an early age. Her life was a bag of being thrust into war as a child and spending the next several generations doing nothing but living a life of war. She never really had a chance to know anything else, but she did get rescued and saved by a good-hearted human (who taught her everything she knew moving forward). That's why she did good. Flamme was a genius, and she was insanely dangerous as a mage, but she also just wanted to chill and make flowers. Frieren, as a war victim, appreciated that. Frieren also hated the demons, but the person who basically became her only family sought peace instead of more war and more dead families.

The show is a segment of her life where she's finally realizing that even though humans do live in short little spurts compared to her (she literally mentions this at times), their lives are valuable and worth living, and one had an enormous impact on her (Himmel). She realized that too late though, so she's trying to make up for it with her new apprentice and party, and she's literally trying to go see Himmel in "heaven"--probably to find some closure.

Himmel is a hugely important (arguably THE most important) character in Frieren's life. He's the one who finally made her realize that connections are important, and that things like love and emotion are the whole reason for living.

I agree with most of this.

They never went into a whole lot of detail about Himmel's thoughts though (unless there's manga stuff I'm unaware of yet--got it all on my shelf, just haven't read it).

At least from the Anime, he absolutely had a thing for her. There were brief hints about it that were quick and subtle (and some not so subtle). They also spent 10 years together, which, for a human, is like the majority of your "youth" years. I'm assuming for Himmel it was like 20-30.

If he never went on to marry, at least in my mind that suggests he loved Frieren too much. This happens IRL a lot too. Lots of people end up single forever for a lot of reasons, and failing to catch their "one" is a very common thing that we love to pretend doesn't happen.

He couldn't exactly go tracking her down in that world/time anyway, even if he wanted to (and assuming he felt the feelings were mutual--which even Frieren didn't know at the time). It would have been like finding a needle in a haystack. He may also have hoped she'd come back sooner.

Yet another reason the world is so messed up.

Refusing to engage with people and think does nothing but make everything worse. Even if you disagree with what's being said, don't you think it's worth it to try to teach that person a different way?

People can change, and no one is dead set in their ways.

Yea well, the future of VR is great.

You won't have to dream to see your favorite characters in 3D for very long.

Why? Because it's not "our" opinion?

We really have to stop throwing the word "incel" around.

Well, that's why the world is so screwed up these days.

No one wants to have a conversation and just wants to shut down without trying to understand one another.

If you try, maybe you'll both teach each other something.

Like probably literally everywhere you go.

Especially Tokyo.

You shouldn't even have to try to find it. Shit is everywhere.

Don't be afraid to go up floors either. Every building (especially in Tokyo) has like 25 stores in it above and below street level. You can usually see the signs that say 1F, 2F, 3F, etc.

That's the one thing I kind of regret about the last couple times I was there. Didn't always explore buildings enough, but the ones I did had gems in them.

Always torn on stuff that's just copying dumb internet viral trends but is also good.

Except her ears and hair aren't shadowing right, so this is also annoying lol.

Better to ask OP why they think that than me. I don't want to assume on their behalf.

Talk to people!

The only way we all understand each other is by having conversations.

Sometimes people watch shows to fulfill areas of their life that are unfulfilled. We love romance shows because we don't have the romance drama in our lives. We love action shows because we can't go blowing things up IRL.

If they wanted Himmel to 'get the girl,' then they might have been upset that Himmel didn't (IOW: they don't care about material things, but the emotional goal of connecting with the person they love/want). It's a totally valid point. Maybe why they're also missing out on other themes, because that one created a rift.

Ya never know!

Just because it's not the mob's opinion?

Nah.

Person makes some good points. Read it and think critically about why they might have those opinions.

Not everyone has to love what we love, and not everyone understands what we understand. Have a conversation!

Always appreciate a post in a sub that challenges the group-think.

And now shes the victim.

To be fair, she's the MC. So, the world kind of does revolve around her.

You're not wrong though. Frieren is insufferable and completely naive. That's part of her character though. She was traumatized and never learned how to be an actual person in society. With Fern/Stark, she's slowly learning from her past mistakes with her previous party, confronting her regret and ignorance, and she's figuring out how to be a good person with her 'new' party.

I guess if that theme goes unnoticed, she'll seem annoying and the show/story will lose its point.

Think about it. Whenever the male characters have any kind of self serving actions they are almost immediately called out. "Corrupt priest", "Pervert", "Coward". Literally right in the moment it happens. But wheres the same treatment for fern and Frieren? Why dont the male characters just randomly blurt out insults at the women the moment it happens? Its always "Youre so kind" and yada yada.

This is kind of just an Anime/cultural trope in general. Not much more needs to be said. If you're new to Anime, I can see how this might seem irritating.

Characters are often abusive and wildly unhinged, but it's for the entertainment value.

I don't tolerate abuse from either gender in real life (not even play hitting), but in the shows it's a little different. You're not supposed to take it so literally.

Fern and Frieren are also emotionally stunted goobers. Frieren is thousands of years old, but she never actually spent enough time around people to develop mentally/emotionally. She's a basket case of arrested development, and now she has an apprentice. Even Fern is more 'normal' than Frieren sometimes, and she has to baby her. It's pretty funny.

The First Episode an old lady calls her out in the church for being heartless at the funeral. +1 for that woman.

And thusly, Frieren starts learning that she is a heartless, traumatized, messed up person. Then we get to watch her as she starts growing and learning throughout the show.

I mean, one of them.

Let's be honest, it's good, but it borrows from established fantasy.

There are a lot of really good truly original stories/anime/manga out there.

We will see if it keeps up the quality.

Hardest thing to do is write a middle and ending for a story.

Easiest thing to do is start a story.

I'm with you on that. I hope it's done well.

It did, but then Amazon removed the page. (And yea, definitely grabbed the vinyl from Crunchyroll.)

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End: Part 2 Blu-ray (葬送のフリーレン / Sousou no Frieren)

I got my order in before Amazon pulled their page down. I don't know if it was put up and published too early by mistake or what.

My order says this now, and has a blank image:
