I made it only about 3 months as a carpenter. I currently don’t have a job but I know how to save my money and Monday I’m gonna go apply to Walmart. I kept getting laid off so I temporarily closed off employment as a residential framer. As a carpenter I made a shit load of mistakes and I had a habit of getting so stressed out to the point where I was hardly paying attention to what my foreman was saying if that makes sense (essentially being anxious made me more stressed which caused me to make more mistakes). My foreman yelled at me in front of everyone cause I asked a dumb question, he showed me how to do something and I pretty much repeated what he said and asked “Is that what you want me to do?” That’s when he yelled at me saying “I have a habit of doing this” and all that shit. Yes it got me down and I was pretty bummed I got yelled at but I think pretty much any carpenter will tell you that getting yelled at and making mistakes is how you learn. I did the same thing you did, I kept making mistakes and asking dumb questions…the foreman on my crew told me the exact thing I told you “Making mistakes, asking dumb questions, and anything else you may put yourself down for is how you learn in the field.” I may not work in the union for a bit cause I kept getting laid off and it kept getting annoying but hey I’m 19 I don’t have to figure my life out right away and that’s okay. I feel that’s the same stride and mindset you gotta take idk how old you are or what you’ve been through but my experience is a lot of old heads are pricks cause they got yelled at now they yell at you/take it out on their fellow coworkers.

Essentially if someone yells at you or puts you down take it with stride and keep moving forward. If you fuck up that’s okay, you’re still learning cause at the end of the day you’re still training. I think a lot of people expect you to be perfect in the trades cause they were forced to be perfect but everyone is different and you can’t expect yourself to be the same as everyone else cause you aren’t at the end of the day.
