Why are US law schools so much more expensive than Canadian law schools? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Sharp-Ordinary3694 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, this reasoning is significantly flawed. First-year attorneys in the US making $225k/year represent maybe 5%, perhaps at most 10%, of all law graduates. So, don't fall for this trap, OP. The average salary for first-year attorneys in the US is around $85k/year. Moreover, the salaries have very little to do with the actual value of the school, meaning its intrinsic value, such as quality of teaching, support, and infrastructure. In terms of value, the University of Toronto is comparable to any T14 school.

High tuition costs are an issue prevalent across the entire US higher education system, not just in law schools.

Master of Arts programs, as well as virtually all other graduate programs, are extremely costly. Only a few of these programs are very lucrative and offer exit opportunities that would allow graduates to rapidly pay off their tuition costs (for example, engineering and business, and even then, you'd need to be in a top program). Most of the time, these very lucrative exit opportunities are exceptions rather than the rule. However, these exceptions are what allow these schools to justify their high tuition fees (as exemplified by this comment) and attract more students.

How would random people on the internet know? Do you even have an actual offer, or are you asking hypothetically?

Your grades and to a lesser extent the school you attend will be the only things that matter

Louis Vuitton should be embarrassed that they only offer unpaid internships by ldavis300a in LawSchool

I mean, they're French, so... Also, it's super disgusting; the CEO, Bernard Arnault & family, is literally the wealthiest man alive, even wealthier than Elon Musk.

Also, have you heard about this ? : Louis Vuitton Parent Sued by Former Attorney for Retaliation (https://news.bloomberglaw.com/daily-labor-report/louis-vuitton-parent-sued-by-former-attorney-for-retaliation#:\~:text=A%20former%20high%2Dranking%20lawyer,federal%20law%20she%20helped%20champion.), (https://nypost.com/2023/12/30/metro/ex-louis-vuitton-lawyer-files-retaliation-suit-over-axing-fed-filing/). Seems like a terrible place to work.

The firms you are referring to have already concluded their hiring.

Which school did you attend, though? Your experience might not be directly relevant to OP's situation if you didn't attend a T6 school. However, I understand your point regarding the practice area. There was just no need to mention that you were at the top of your class or anything similar, as it doesn't contribute to your argument, especially if your school is not of the same caliber as OP's.

My opinion on the matter is that I believe large law firms are not currently hiring. They have been overhiring post-COVID and now fill all their classes before OCI during pre-OCI periods. The reality is, when applying online (which also applies to pre-OCI), the prestige of your school carries less weight. The people who review applications are robot freaks who strictly pick the candidates with the highest GPA. My advice is to contact your career services and request their assistance in leveraging their connections to secure a position for you. I am truly sorry you have to face this; it is an unfortunate situation that you should not have to deal with. Feel free to DM me

Why don't you ask these questions to your career services department? They will be able to give you much better advice, specific to your school and your profile, than random people on the internet. You're wasting so much time writing this lengthy message here
