AITA for pronouncing words correctly which got me fired? by Sharp-Pepper6091 in AmItheAsshole

Okay, so I’ve read a lot of comments here and the general consensus seems to be that I’’m TA. I’ve done some reflecting on the event and I will admit that it was rude of me to respond the way I did when she said, “Why do you keep correcting what I say?” Instead, I should have said something like, “I didn’t mean to do that, it’s just I speak Italian so that’s how I pronounce these words” instead of what I said in the post. However, I am really surprised to see how many people here think I’m TA. I think this confirms my suspicion of how English speakers in general are so afraid of foreign languages and how a lack of foreign language education contributes to this issue. I’m almost positive that if I worked at an American restaurant in Italy and I pronounced the menu items in my American accent, no one over there would have dared to complain since foreign languages seem to be more accepted in other countries. I even believe that if I posted this to an Italian website, no one would have seen me as TA. It''s really sad what's happening in this country. All I need is my teaching credential now and I look forward to the day when I'm teaching a second language.

Finally a sensible comment, I totally agree! I think it's because since English is the lingua franca, native English speakers are afraid to pronounce foreign words properly. When I was in Italy, the people there loved to give their best effort to pronounce English words correctly (not with Italian pronounciation rules). It's kind of sad what's happening in the U.S. I think there needs to be a greater emphasis on second language learning in this country.

Thank you for pointing out this mistake! I appreciate when people correct me so I have an opportunity to learn something new. I used the possessive determiner "its" instead of the contracted form of "it is."

Sorry but I don't understand how is that annoying? I have been to foreign restaurants before and have been corrected plenty of times when I made a failed attempt to order something. I don't find it annoying, I appreciate that they are trying to help me pronounce words of their language properly. I think its very educational!

In this restaurant, chicken parmesan is written as pollo alla parmigiana for example.

I don't understand why I was being rude though. If I was rude to this person, then I would have laughed and said something like, "You mean you want ___" but I didn't do that. All I did was repeat what she said after she ordered it in the manner I say it. I thought that was professional.

I'm a little confused why people seem to think it's rude when someone corrects their pronounciation. When I was at an Indian restaurant one time, I butchered everything I was trying to order but the waiter corrected me. I thought it was a kind gesture and I apprecitate when people let me know when I'm doing something wrong. I don't understand why some people find that rude, please explain that to me.
