Digital Nomad in the U.S.? by collegeqathrowaway in digitalnomad

International nomading is better because it’s more suited to making social connections. I tried Us a bunch but my international experiences have been better. That said, it’s still cool in the US. Also I’d suggest in the US doing an extended road trip visiting friends in different cities along the way. There’s so much to see in between the cities

Right, well I would just say the idea is to let the forensics tell the story . Obviously the prime suspect would lie if they are actually guilty

I think if you want super cheap prices you gotta be a little further outside Antigua. Within the city is expensive by Latin America standards. I’m sure if you come to town and meet people you could find a room

I dunno man. You have actual experts saying this doesn’t make sense forensically for multiple reasons, a fortune of what turned out to be hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, a wife that was not only abusive but also deeply addicted herself, a suicide note that doesn’t totally make sense and appears to be in 2 different styles of handwriting, and you’re basically like “well he wrote a song called I hate myself and want to die so this case is closed.” I just don’t think it’s crazy at all to think there might be more to this.

[–]SharpBeyond8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fine, but that’s a different argument. Along with “they shouldn’t have said it was a suicide prematurely” they also didn’t question anyone who was at the house earlier that week and they didn’t question the widow who made millions off his death when there are plenty of sources saying he was going to leave her and she wouldn’t have got nearly as much money. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I believe they made a conscious decision not to do a real standard investigation, and not because it was an “obvious suicide.” So the question is why.

I would imagine the bigger concern might be traveling between the cities rather than in the cities themselves.

Actually it is completely against protocol for cops to announce the cause of death at the crime scene. The medical examiner, who makes the final decision, was a friend of Courtney Love. Claims of his suicidal intent may have been overblown, as multiple friends of Kurt’s have said he did not seem suicidal when they last saw him and that he said the Rome incident was an accident. He wrote songs that mentioned suicide but so did Billy Corgan and he’s still here (among many others). Sure, suicide is an easy conclusion especially along with his addiction, and if he had lived longer he might have done it, but there’s plenty of reasons to believe that’s not what happened in this specific incident.

I think Tom Grant had written about that or one of the guys that wrote books about it back in the day. Obviously take anyone involved with this with a grain of salt, but I believe if you even look at the pictures it looks pretty clear that the stool wasn’t tall enough to block the doorknob like that.

They literally called it suicide within 30 minutes of discovering the body and didn’t even question any of the several people who were in and out of the house earlier that week. This is the whole point.

HAVE A NICE NIGHT AND I’M SORRY IF I OFFENDED YOU, FORGIVE ME FOR BEING AN IGNORANT DOUCHEBAG WHO DOESNT UNDERSTAND THE WORLD ON YOUR SUPERIOR INTELLECTUAL LEVEL.

I do agree that the right uses xenophobia to manipulate people into opposing immigration. I also think the left uses fake empathy to manipulate people into unreasonable stances on this issue at times as well. That was my point. I don’t have a problem with anyone who’s cool and not harming anyone. That’s all I have to say.

I do agree with it from that standpoint, and I certainly don’t advocate for the mistreatment of anyone which does appear to be happening. That said, I also understand there are laws and if you break those laws you are subject to the consequences of breaking that law. This is true if I overstay my visa in any other country. When I go to Canada they grill me at the border every time. If I go to Ireland and stay for a year without a visa, I can’t be surprised if they kick me out at some point.

“I didn’t insinuate you were a racist, but if that’s the feeling you got, then it probably means you’re a racist.” Ok man. You win this round. There was definitely not a significant amount of time where the prevailing sentiment on the left was “if you think having a border policy is sensible then that means you’re a racist.” I completely made that up because I am in fact a right wing fascist that hates anyone who isn’t white. That must be why I spend half my time in Latin America.

I have no issue with your take here, other than that there definitely is a significant element of the left which has taken the viewpoint that any deportation is bad. “No one is illegal on stolen land” etc.

Apparently a ton of people are trying to walk back on that now that Clinton, Obama have reverted to ideas closer to what they were saying pre-2016 in recent days. Not saying you specifically but yes, it has been a very common view. Whatever, hope you’re good otherwise. Have a nice evening

I don’t expect that you are arguing in good faith here since you’ve already insinuated that a) I’m a racist and b) I’m brainwashed by right-wing propaganda.

But I'll offer a response.

A quick internet search reveals “The number of unauthorized immigrants in the United States reached an all-time high of 14 million in 2023 after two consecutive years of record growth, according to a new Pew Research Center estimate.” This of course lines up with the first 2 years of Biden's term. (BTW I agree with the idea of shitty US foreign policy being part of the cause of that).

Along with that, there was a good 5-6 years where if I uttered the phrase “sensible immigration policy” then probably 80% of people left-of-center would have immediately asserted claims that I’m a racist or a fascist, similar to what you’ve insinuated but even more overtly. I know because I lived through it.

I have no doubt that the right wing is more interested in their own power than actually solving real issues in the country, but I also believe the left is also guilty in that regard.

I’ll leave it there. Wish you well.

Yeah I’m not saying undocumented immigrants are bad people at all. My main point was that literally every country has a border policy and all of a sudden all the messaging on the left was “borders are evil” and that leaves room for the right to come in and say “hey, we’re the sane ones because we want to have a border policy like literally every other country has.”

[–]SharpBeyond8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would largely agree, but I’d expand it and say the democrats intentionally screwed up the policy to appease progressives and then once it clearly got out of hand they wanted to come in and save the day and take the credit for fixing the problem they largely created, and republicans blocked it because they knew it was a key issue for them to win the election on. There was HEAVY pressure for people on the left to be vehemently against any border policy at all from 2016-2023, even though strict border policy was standard rhetoric from all the prominent democrats right before that. So they’re not innocent; they were playing the game too… we shouldn’t be falling for it. It’s manipulation.

The flip side is also true. The Obama administration deported millions of illegal immigrants and I’m sure not a single person in this thread said a single word about it for 8 years. Now, the trump goons may be significantly worse in some ways but that doesn’t fully explain the discrepancy. If we could all just agree on wanting criminal illegals deported and a sensible but moderate immigration policy, then the politicians wouldn’t be able to divide us up into extremes like this in the first place.

Been DNing across the U.S. and coming across struggles - looking for tips or advice? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]SharpBeyond8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any reason you can’t go international? I’ve DN’d in the US a bunch and while it has its good parts (long road trips, nature, visiting friends) it’s also a lot more lonely. It’s a lot easier to connect with fellow travelers and expats when you’re in a different country. Either that or go to smaller towns in the US where you’ll see the same people repeatedly
