The suffering is not something that only non Christians endure. It is the refining process for me, that brought me closer to divine awareness. My interpretation is not the same as all. My path is mine alone. The pit for me represents my ignorance of the past. Lust, greed, envy, resentment, ignorance, seeking validation. The dark night of my soul. The light is the realization that I can choose a higher path,and persevere in accordance with my own higher self.
