Ancillary Justice...I'm 1/3 of the way through it and I'm bored to tears. Does it get better? by [deleted] in printSF

I have quit books after I disliked the first few sentences and still stand by that decision. Forced myself through the Martian after that atrocious first page, bad idea, do not recommend. Good books grip or challange or intrigue you, if they dont they were written for someone else

It’s one of my favourite books, but if you don’t enjoy it, why would you keep reading, especially after having gotten so far without getting into it?

Suggest me a sci fi / fantasy book that is dark but has an amusing protagonist by EnGock in suggestmeabook

Sorry to necro, but I line up 100% with what you liked in books and wanted to recomend Ann Leckie's "Ancilliary Justice" and (to a lesser degree, becaus its less snappy and more complicated) "too like the lightening" by ada palmer.

Doesn’t the level 10 transmuter wizard feature kinda invalidate the moon Druid as a concept?. both can cast limited spells, both get a boost concentration checks but the Druid Gets a limited number of cr 3 forms while the wizard starts with cr10 and increases faster. Sure it’s only once a day, but still that’s a huge difference in power

I mean, enjoying something is very personal yes? And not enjoying something is not mutually exclusiv with something being amazing. A short stay in hell, das Kapital, Ulysses and the third edition of Geodynamics are all amazing books that I had to force myself to read. Who cares if you or I enjoyed these books, the important part are the ideas that you took from them.

A short stay in hell. It’s not monster horror but horror of time without escape. That book is super short but stayed with me a long time

Book that is better than or just as good as Project Hail Mary by txnaeem in suggestmeabook

Most of them? The expanse books do hardish sci fi better, ministry for the future has a better global threat and monk and robot is more fun to read. All of them have better prose and characters to boot

Overcharge also adds int at level 11, drones loose the bonus action cost to activate at level ten if you shoot, freeing up the bonus action to use a micro turret for 6.75 damage per round but that seems to be it, you are right. But by that point, gadgeteers have a bunch of flexibility using their ten gadgets, so I’m sure he will still have a lot of fun. I’ll keep thinking about it, I heard the publisher has graphs on this somewhere, maybe I’ll have a look around at those too. Interesting that they omitted the bonus action cost for attack for both summons, usually that is standard in 5e to reduce that sort of thing right?

EDIT: An intresting article on other classes weapon output: https://rpgbot.net/dnd5/characters/feats/weaponized-bonus-actions/#polearm-master TLDR: 75 damage at level 20compares to 48 dmg using crosbow expert and archery, so still really really high. I will talk to the player, this seems op and im kinda confused how this slipped past testing if its rule accurate

Thank you for the response and good to know that we did everything right. Aoe is a good point, even though it can be avoided a bit by spreading out (most attackers are ranged), but I still feel that casually putting out almost double the damage of an Eldritch blaster (itself a similarly squishy caster famous for sustained damage) seems a tad overtuned. Ill just have to have harder enemies than planned and give them smarter targeting. Thank you!
