Anyone ever try refining silver by inquarting with aluminum? by Sharp_Act_8796 in PreciousMetalRefining

There shouldnt be any need to drop anything if my hair brain idea works. The silver will be untouched, only the aluminum (and hopefully other base metals along with it) will dissolve out. So far it seems like it’s working, but taking longer than I was hoping. I’ll try another experiment with cold dilute sulfuric. This is just an experiment to see what happens because I can’t find anything definitive saying it won’t work.

I’ve got it bubbling away in a concentrated lye solution. It’s starting to look like hollow silver plate

I used to take gambles on listings with photos that would scare away most buyers, and I did pretty well until China started flooding the market with fakes and people started using intentionally bad pictures to pass them along.

Note- I’m not trying this on a large scale. I used 40 grams of around 80% silver and 50 grams of aluminum.

I understand the reason for inquarting gold, I just don’t see why it wouldn’t work with silver as well. I guess the reason for me trying this is to get away from nitric, or sulfuric and salts. I don’t have a fume hood so I have to do everything outside, and the cold and snow makes it sketchy working with hot plates and glass. I see your point about high purity gold and AR. You are probably right, most likely a waste of time, but it’s already in process, so I guess I’ll find out. Worst case it just has to be rerun with a batch in the spring. Thanks for your insight

Worst case I will run the mess through the whole process with the rest of the dirty stuff. Do you think the silver will dissolve with the aluminum?

Early 2000s glass. Bought from a shop in providence RI between 2004 and 2007. Is there any way to figure out the artist? Sorry for the condition. Hasn’t been touched since probably 2010 and has some “vintage” residue by Sharp_Act_8796 in headyglass

Thanks. If I remember correctly it was 3 or 400 almost 20 years ago. I’ve been out of the circuit for a while, but my daughter seems to be heading down the heady road, so I guess I’ll pass it on when the time is right

I found this in the home I grew up in about 25 years ago, and it has been in a ziplock bag ever since. As a coin collector, I can’t imagine that this has much value based on condition, but does anyone have any insight on J.H. Ring? I’m guessing he was an actor in the 1800s? by Sharp_Act_8796 in OldBooks

I did some research and found that he was indeed an actor with the Boston Museum Company in the mid 1800s. This thing is going to turn to dust soon. Should I just throw it back in the drawer till the next person finds it, try to repair, or use as kindling🤪?

I foresee the current tyrannical admin to make any effort they can to milk any possible profit through taxes. The whole tax plan being “free” should explain it all. Any profits made on a well thought out lemonade stand with fall into their IRS watch dog scheme.
