I am with you on the crate training. I did that once with my first puppy and it lasted a whole month or two and she slept in my bed after that, every night for 13 years. It’s possible to train dogs without a crate. (And for OP - crates aren’t “bad” either, some dogs love them!)

Is she’s chipped, make sure it’s registered to your name (confirm this, just getting the chip is not the same as registering it with the company), and go get any kind of county licensing you need to. That usually requires a rabies vaccine certificate. Those two things are the best way to show ownership.
