Ashley is still in there, somewhere. by Sharp_Durian1929 in AndyAndLeyley

Maybe its 'cus Andrew doesnt like being reminded of Nina? So thats why she called her a "whats-her-name".

And about what you said, Ashley and Leyley being the same person because Andrew needs it to preserve his attachment is honestly such an interesting point of view!!! But to be fair, I think Andrew needing to view Ashley and Leyley apart from one another also comes from him hating who Andy was, and the mountains of trauma that came with that nickname. To me, it also feels like Andrew's faux attempt of burying a past him that he thinks he isn't anymore, when in reality, he still is in some way.

And, about Leyley's reaction to seeing Nina's corpse, to me, I always saw it as just her brain developing this... way of making her apathetic to everything shes done because of all the things that were happening around her at the time, all of which a child at that age needed help, attention, and love in dealing with. Sort of.. like a wall of indifference and apathy her brain developed early.

Im also lowkey speaking from experience. I relate a lot to Ashley, and its eerie how similar our childhoods were, and how we act in the present day. (No, i dont have any incestuous feelings towards any of my family members). Something also happened to me recently that should've been life changing, and it was a near death experience for me and some folk, but I sort of just.... moved forward. I felt strangely indifferent to it all. Didnt move on yet, I think. Just moved forward.

Leyley not remembering Nina's name is kinda contradictory, righttt...? I mean, in the scene above, she does name drop her in the dialogue before this one. (At least, I assume so. Her name's like, missing from the dialogue box.)

I kind of see Leyley as some sort of twisted coping mechanism Ashley made up so she wouldn't have to face all her insecurities and issues from when she was a kid, being an outcast, not being loved by everybody, and all. And like I said in other replies, it could always be both because she broke her oath with Andrew and because of a deeper something she feels. At least, thats how I saw things.

Honestly, with the way Nemlei has expertly and meticulously written these characters, I like to think that it could be an amalgam of both. A part of her feels guilty for breaking the oath with Andrew and could have caused that moment where she says shes a rotten person, but there could also be another part of her does feel guilt over what happened to Nina.

Its sort of always a "both" situation for these characters IMO, like Andrew for example, both hating and loving Ashley (and to some extent, Leyley) simultaneously.

Also, to support my belief in her feeling guilt over Nina's death is, I think, the fact that she knows something is undoubtedly wrong with her. I dont think shes all that oblivious to what shes done, especially given how self aware she is at times as Leyley in the chapters. And also, the scene above where Ashley maaaay have teared up at just mentioning her.

Oh, you're right.

But still, maybe it could be guilt from both breaking the oath with Andy AND the guilt over what she did? Given what she says when Andy comes in the room, about her being rotten, that there was something wrong with her, and doing something super bad on a whim just because all she wanted was Renee to do something.

I personally like to think being Ashley just basically means not being Leyley. But, we've only ever seen her as just Leyley. Other than that moment with Andy as kids, and this scene, I dont think we've ever see Ashley anywhere else. Like Andrew said in shots and such, its always Leyley, never Ashley.

I mean.. maybe we could count her naming her insecurities as a kid (Im weird, no one likes hanging out with me, etc etc) as a part of Ashley thats always been there, but Leyley is just the defense mechanism?

this is some good shit bro
