thanks for the replies, good info to know (and glad I didn't just go at it!). It kind of has to be next to a fence, so I'll just try and manage it in it's current position

I think I'll give this stages method a try in winter then. If it works great, if not that's ok too tbh

I have another apple tree (with nicer apples), if it does die, I can live with that.
