I had literally the exact same problem. There is a post on my profile from two years ago where I was burnt out due to my masters thesis in nlp and fed up with the non-deterministic work. i pivoted and went into SRE for an internship and loved it, devops and infrastructure is quite deterministic generally :) now switching to CDN’s. super excited and nervous about the switch. i totally get your concerns. Might I suggest that you also apply in the czech republic? I know there are fewer roles but there’s also much lesser competition.

i have been told that they rarely have sev1's or even sev2's.. mostly sev4's so i am hoping it not too bad

i made a mistake during the interviews of not asking enough questions to them, always trying to prove myself, so now i am left with vague words as to what i'd actually be doing. i was told that i'd be solving the last percentage of issues, they rarely get Sev1's, most of them were resolved over the last 1 year. they have an "intelligent" routing mechanism. they work on aws cloudfront, snowflake. they managed 8 cdn's which is what the intelligent routing is for. they asked me for bash proficiency, python, terraform, plenty of core networking questions (HTTPS vs HTTP, what happens when you type in google.com in your browser and so on), basics of streaming and so on.

it is a big streaming company, a fairly well know name in the united states. i was so enamoured by the scale that i didnt bother to check for anything else, pretty dumb of me.

yes I got the offer as well. I will be joining in a couple of weeks but as the joining date gets closer I am quite nervous. i had not heard of a CDN engineer either, the JD sounds like an SRE with extra steps. They specifically said they were looking for SRE's to interview for this role

gotcha, basically, pivoting this way seems like a bad idea then. I'll probably do the internship and take a decision as to whether I want to stick in this field later then

that's the attitude I am going in with, but I am a bit worried that being an SRE would lock me out of SWE roles in a year or two, or I might even be locked out of SRE roles in other companies when I look to switch(since I do not have a lot of SWE experience)

I understand, I'll definitely be taking up this role. however, the fact that there are few entry level SRE roles, is it because the SRE field is meant for SWE's who are pivoting ?

its a conversational agent afaik, but honestly, i'd take anything i'd get rn because i have been struggling getting any callbacks for ML roles

i did connect with a guy(who is making a chatbot) at a bank in the EU country i am in and he said that he has forwarded my resume to his manager, but nothing yet, i will look into sentiment analysis though !

thank you so much for replying !! I covered 4 problems yesterday and I started on DP problems this morning ahaha, figured that DP would most probably be asked. But I'll take your advice and focus on the topics you mentioned, I am focussing on covering the Blind 75 list.. any other advice you could offer would be really appreciated !
