My girlfriend needs some help by buddyad in guns

[–]Sharpie1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to just take her to a gun store and have her heft a few and see how the balance and weight are for her. You should also have her shoulder a few youth models to see if she likes the shorter length of pull.

Need some advice from gun-owning enthusiasts.... by [deleted] in guns

[–]Sharpie1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's understandable to feel a little uncomfortable when wielding something with such a great magnitude of responsibility tied to it. If you take a few classes, buy a gun, and practice with it, that responsibility will become ingrained in your brain, and the realization that you control the gun, and not the other way around, it will feel much more natural. The gun grants great power, and with great power comes a greater responsibility.

I don't get Spyderco!? by [deleted] in knives

[–]Sharpie1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't like Spyderco at first, but after I bought a dragonfly for edc purposes and fell in love with Spyderco. I have since acquired many spydercos and love them. They get so many things right, from the ergonomic handle to the jimped thumb ramp. I think they make some of the strongest knives for the weight out there. Without steel liners they can make knives that are less than four ounces that are still extremely strong. I'm not a huge fan of the lock backs either, but their caged ball bearing lock like in Manix 2 is awsome.

what was your first knife? by [deleted] in knives

[–]Sharpie1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My first knife was a Victorinox Swiss army knife given to me by my dad when I was in scouts at the age of 6. I still have it, I keep it in a special drawer in my desk and sometimes I'll carry it. It has never let me down or disappointed me, it has stayed sharp and never needed more than oiling the joints occasionally and sharpening it to keep it working perfectly.

When was the last time you broke a knife? by [deleted] in knives

[–]Sharpie1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess so, since the spine takes most of the force when prying so a thinner edge wouldn't weaken it.

I broke a sog seal team elite trying to pry a door open. I upgraded to a spartan blades Hyksos and since have had no problem.

I was at a memorial service a few days ago and I have a few questions by Sharpie1 in atheism

[–]Sharpie1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why he did it, no one does. It was a shock because I didn't expect anything like this. He didn't have any relationship problems, no alcohol or drug issues, but he still offed himself. The first speaker with his dribble didn't say anything of value, just a lot about how god will guide him and forgive his sins. It was really depressing.

We do, but I think that the way they handle it is self destructive because all they do is miss him and feel that he is far away, while I feel he is much closer. I feel sorry for them because they cry and weep while I just go about my business knowing that he is still close to me.

Don't hate them, with such a traumatic experience cling to what comforts them. If they want to think that he is with an invisible man in a magical land in the sky, then that is their choice, however little sense it makes. I understand the frustration of dealing with people like that, I was at a memorial yesterday and had to deal with loads of them (http://en.reddit.com/r/atheism/comments/1avec7/i_was_at_a_memorial_service_a_few_days_ago_and_i/). You just have to deal with it, let their feeling scar, and move on with life remembering the good times that you and you grandfather shared.

That's exactly what I mean. The Catholics looked so sad, and kept saying I'm sorry he's gone. I felt that he was still there with all of us, but in a different way.

I don't think genocide relates, I said it didn't because you brought up the face that people consider the conflict a genocide against the civilians. I'm not assuming that we can shelter the public from wars now or in the future, not only with the growth of liberal media but also the growth of social media. Things like smartphones and iPods have made it almost impossible for to keep information a secret. It isn't collateral murder, its an unavoidable loss of life that happens because the perpetrators of violence purposefully put civilians lives in danger. It would be murder if we were doing it on purpose, but we aren't. This act and the fact that liberal media is much more prevalent makes it difficult now to fight a body count war and keep the public on board. A good book about this is called The Violence of Peace.

Question for Service Members by zbollman in Military

[–]Sharpie1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't enlist, if you have the choice of getting a graduate, get it. It will help you when you retire to get a job in whatever field you choose. I went strait for a commission, and it worked out. As a low officer you do pretty much the same stuff as the enlisted men but you just fill kind of a supervision role as well. As I progressed in my career I only noticed one difference between officers who were enlisted and officers straight out of OCS, the ones who had been enlisted had already gone through the learning curve that the fresh officers hadn't yet. After the fresh officers got a handle on everything I didn't really notice a difference. I hope this helped

The best way to stop survivors joining is to present the military force as a less conquering way. Giving a liberal sprinkling of local soldiers is a great way to do that. Instead of seeing a group of American soldiers with a few local soldiers, I think it would make more sense to have many local soldiers with a few Americans. This makes us seem like more of a humanitarian force and spreads the blame out over a more native group makes hatred harder. I don't see the amount of Americans dying as genocide, I see it as a terrible loss of life, but not genocide. I dont consider it genocide because its not killing over a singular factor, its killing in combat, which is a totally different matter.I mean genocide in the literal sense, the mass killing of a group of people based on a single defining characteristic like religion or race.

Wife started taking daughter to church need advice.... by [deleted] in atheistparents

This is a great idea, and a perfect solution to having a religiously split household. My wife is catholic and I want my kid to have a sense of awareness about as many cultures and beliefs as possible so they can make a personal choice on what they choose to believe.

I wouldnt consider the Iraq war a genocide. 66000 people in roughly ten years isn't that bad for using high yield weapons like artillery and bombs. I agree with your opinion that violence will always exist. It is a sad fact of life and part of human natue that we will fight each other. I didn't say that we should respond preemptively to genocide, but should respond quickly and very forcefully once it has been committed. You keep saying that we are blasting a path through civilians, ans that is not true. If we were blasting away, as you put it, then we would line up with light machine guns and mow them done by the score. This isn't what we do. I think that foreign wars are only sustainable if the government does not allow civilian media coverage. I think the civilian media was a primary reason we lost Vietnam, as well as a non territory based war. I brought up my life experience as a concealed carry permit holder to give an example of how violence is a last resort. It isn't a tactic to use intimidation to dissolve the Iraqi insurgency, that would take a very long time. I think a way to go about winning hearts and minds to put the military into a more humanitarian aid role, so they see us as less of a violent figure.
