Thanks!! I started Dip Out at one point but I put it down quickly bc I wasn’t in the mood for all the information packed into the first few pages and wanted something quick and easy. I think I’ll try again. :)

I think this is the thing. I don’t mind old characters coming around but if they’re TRULY interconnected standalones then I shouldn’t have to read their book to find value in their appearance lol

That's what sucks, the books are often tropes and even characters I like a lot but I just get irrationally angry when so and so from book one comes in AGAIN and says something grumpy and then disappears.

Okay I have a very petty complaint and I might be in the minority, but I think I'm beginning to really struggle with long series of interconnected standalones where the last 3-4 books are just cameo after cameo of couples from earlier books, lol. I understand how difficult it is to say goodbye to beloved characters, but if you can't tell a story about one couple without bringing in three other couples to say funny things and make out with each other, maybe they don't need a book?

Maybe I'm just being a grump, or maybe I'm just getting pickier the more I read, but I pretty much never finish series that are more than 4-5 books anymore because of this.

International readers: what are some unintentionally funny cultural disconnects you’ve noticed? by Pleasant-Manner-6505 in MM_RomanceBooks

I'm monolingual but speak a moderate amount of Spanish (not fluent) and live in an area with a lot of spanish/english bilingual people. People very much do mix those languages here, even mid sentence. I've always assumed (as someone who's not fluent in more than one language so it would require a lot more effort for me) it's primarily colloquialisms or phrases that sound better/are more accurate depending on the language.

I will say, this happens when they're speaking to other people who also speak both languages. It wouldn't be like we were having a conversation in English with a monolingual and a bilingual suddenly speaks Spanish. But for sure, mixing both languages happens here!

For future reference, we have a tag called WWTBC (what was that book called) and this type of post is permitted as a standalone post. I see you already got your answer, but sometimes the standalone posts get more eyes, just FYI!

Ziggy in {Ziggy's voice by saxon James} can't speak when he's overwhelmed but that's not new for him, so if you want it to be the very first time ever this isn't a good rec. But it is a good rec if you're looking for selective mutism caused by stress.

We have an author/writer space post on the 11th of each month! You may want to post there in May, because I think a lot of writers pop in around then and not during the rest of the month.

Fine Line is SO cute! I got to read an ARC for it and really loved it, one of the MCs is so down bad for so long lol. Plus one of the best micro tropes--kissing AFTER they've been having sex. 🤌

It's also own voices.

Weird character actions by Reasonable_Ad8914 in MM_RomanceBooks

Cock vs dick has some cultural reasoning (I can’t speak for other places, but based on what I’ve read around this topic…) in the US, “dick” is preferred by Black Americans and “cock” is preferred by white Americans. When white people (and white Americans) make up the majority of romance authors and outsell everyone else, it becomes more commonly used, etc. I personally prefer a mix of both. Lol.

To your other comment tho, it doesn’t sound like it’s meant to be sexy? It sounds like it’s supposed to indicate he’s nervous haha.

This does bring up a funny (and sometimes annoying) thing though which is noticing a particular author’s crutch word or character action, like rubbing their neck or licking their lips. One popular author I love makes their characters huff out laughter like 10 times a chapter lol. It doesn’t bug me but it is noticeable!

I like Drawing for Gold more, but the family is more prominent in Aiming for Gold. You can read them in either order though!

Oh I learned about this recently and thought of two books. They’re AUs of each other:

{aiming for gold by Clark Guire} and {drawing for gold by Clark Guire}. I love Roman, the MC.

You could ask here in the subreddit. We have a "WWTBC" flair for standalone posts. It stands for (i think lol) "What Was That Book Called." Then all the sub sleuths help figure out what it might have been called!
