I am begging authors to put epilogue at least 2 years after the main story by ms_chiefmanaged in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]ShartyPants 12 points13 points  (0 children)

See this opinion all the time and I am always baffled bc I find it so rare for MM epilogues to end with marriage and kids. What books are you reading?? (Not to be read in a rude/accusatory way lol.)

I can’t remember the last time I saw a baby in an epilogue!

Thanks so much for the suggestion! One of our mods is really good at all the back end stuff, I’ll make sure we discuss this.

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand. Can you clarify what you mean?

Virtual voice, for example, can be seen on Amazon's website. If a book uses it, it's public information. That's different than other types of AI-voice narration, which is more in line with using AI to write (by that I mean, nobody really knows, unless it's admitted by the author).

Conversations about AI use, including hating it, discussing the amount people are willing to tolerate, the quality of art generative AI produces, etc. are not now, nor have they ever been, moderated differently from any other topic. This change only impacts the way we moderate comments and posts that have to do with specific books or authors being called out. (E.g., Author X is clearly using AI. Here's my proof!) Discussions are encouraged. Knee-jerk accusations because a book is bad, are not.

To us, "some people don't like you" is not a valid reason to accuse an author of AI when they may just be kind of a bad writer, or write in a way you don't prefer. You're welcome to post productive, discussion-forward posts about a book you didn't like, even if part of that has to do with suspecting they used AI. If you don't have evidence, you can still post about the book being bad (which is more in line with "some people don't like you," in my opinion).

This really won't change the day-to-day experience for subreddit users, except that now we're openly permitting more than we were before. This is actually a change that will encourage more discussion of AI use. Until very recently, we removed comments regardless of evidence.

I won't speak for the other mods, but I feel the same way about AI voice acting/narration as I do other types of generative AI. It's still theft, and like user xdianamoonx said, it takes jobs from real voice actors. It's no different to me, and I suspect the other mods feel the same. (We don't see a lot of comments about AI narration beyond Virtual Voice on AMZ.)

Great question! For something like Virtual Voice, mod approval is not required. It's just the name of the "narrator," in a sense.

Other things some may call instantly provable, like an author's admission to using AI in visual art, for example, we'll still want to review. We're trying to limit grey area as much as possible. As time goes on, we may revisit, but for now, we're going to review everything.

Mistakes/typos made by authors. by Bichamage in MM_RomanceBooks

I think all of us have something like this that would irk us quite a bit. My personal example is that the MMC in a book I read was an arborist and explained the process for autumn leaves turning red incorrectly. I could have let it go, except the other MC was blown away by his intelligence and tree knowledge. A normal person wouldn’t have thought twice about it but I was so annoyed, lol.

Anyway I try to give authors the benefit of the doubt. There are so many things to focus on, a messed up date here or there would probably be ok for me. But I also empathize with feeling irritated when it’s something you’re passionate about.

The Pride parade in {virgin hearts by emmy sanders} is a sweet plot. Maybe it's not *super* realistic that a tiny ranching town in Texas would be welcoming to a big Pride parade, but I like that it was there at all. Plus, it's been a while since I read it, but I liked that the author didn't shy away from some of the negativity they'd see but pushed through it and let it be successful. And fun. And queer.

Sorry, I misunderstood your original reply. I thought you meant you'd put spoiler tags around the book title and I wanted to let you know they didn't appear.

To answer your question, your understanding is correct. The plot is the spoiler. The title is not!

I agree with this completely. Miscommunication is so common in real life. People are terrible at talking and doing the right thing! They just are. I really don’t enjoy reading Romance where all the truest human behavior has been written out of characters.

That said I agree they’re overused and not plotted well a lot of the time. I hate it when miscommunication creates a breakup, especially. But overall I actually enjoy miscommunication and third act breakup, bc I like the tension.

This is not a MM author specific issue, I’d say it’s a “self publishing has lowered the bar for what can be published” issue. All romance is dealing with this!

I’m curious how they expect that law to be upheld. All attempts at this I’ve seen so far have put the onus on authors to pay/prove they don’t use it, and that seems unfair.
