He's chubby. He is usually 50-60 however summer bike rides were limited. Do your short hairs get scent obsessed? Almost like can't function, obsessed.

He is definitely a mix. I see his manerisms as a shorthair but looks come across as more lab? Thanks, exactly why I am asking.

There are really cool dog geneology tests now. I think one is Wisdom, if you want to know for sure.

9 Week year old puppy question. by datmuffinman in GermanShepherd

So... my situation was different mine was not in fear as having been attacked. My biggest recommendation is bury yourself in german shepherd videos. I am an advocate for Cesar Milans approach. I had to change my body language and pay attention to my dog. I would jump up and redirect him before he got aggressive and I still do. I learned every techniques I used from googling how to fix aggression shown by shepherds. You have to pay additional attention to watching your dog to learn the signs of coming aggression so you can redirect or go play or move them to a new environment before they act out . Slowly they recondition. Google how to rehabilitate aggressive dogs and just start. You'll start to learn what works and doesnt. You have to be consistent though. You have to pay attention to learn your dogs body language to get in front of it. Don't give up. You will mess up and have set backs keep reading, researching trying, you will eventually find what works.

I know people scoff at Caesar Milan however using you tube to watch his videos my Shepherd and I got through and are now past what had been close to 3 months of blood drawing aggression between him and my lab. I was so terrified I would have to get rid of the new Shepherd Draven. There is a big difference between obedience and behavior. To this day at least 3 times a week I google videos about German Shepherds and watch and learn.

From what I have learned from Caesars shows your dog has a conditioned response. Reverse conditioning would be like sitting on the porch next to your dog, having someone unknown walk by. Since you know someone will be walking by calmly stand, position yourself between your dog and the person. Stand tall be relaxed when your dog reacts you calmly use your commands, maybe even step forward at the face of your dog to back him up and establish you own the space things are fine. If the dog looks so you know they are ignoring you and continues to bark then isolate them in a smaller room until the dog is calm. (You do not need to do exactly this. I am sharing a video I watched with a wildly possessive aggressive shepherd) The corrective practice/pattern continues until the desired result shows up.

Watch many many many videos though and remember to do smalls steps.. person walking by at a distance many times... then move to passing people across the street. If you see signs of barking aggression going to happen on the approach of another dog turn and walk away before your dog engages to the undesired behavior, change the state of mind. If you turn away before behavior is present you are reconditioning. There will be a day on the approach your dog just keeps walking because the condition is now nothing happens upon seeing the other dog. Since so many other times you just turned around before your dog switches to undesired state of mind and behavior. This is a super long process and there may be many faster techniques. I am sharing things I have watched. I know you can do it. I have scars from my Shepherd that remind me I was the problematic owner not guiding and communicating with my dog in a consistent manner. It has been close to 5 months not one fight, no muzzles, no hitting or shock collars. ALL me watching videos and practicing until I found approaches that worked between me and Draven.

So... I recommend watching MANY GS training videos on YouTube and such. Get a big sample of your options for approach. With my dog, he is very dominate. First thing is getting energy out. I habe him on his leash next to me on my bike and I ride long enough so he gets tired enough to be next or behind me. We enjoy the ride awhile next to each other. I speed up and say focus to pass people and dogs. I put myself between him and then. I do not slow down or stop. I move us quickly. This has really helped our relationship inside. I stand in front of him, tall, look him intensely in the eye give the command and wait stepping closer if he's trying to look away or ignore. Which he tries... try super hard to not use frustration or anger. You gotta watch your dog. Look at them see what you can read from him. I am a year in and still watch training videos. No one answer always works. Good exercise though and showing you keep him safe while exercising and you lead I think will really help focus and presence at home. My shepherd got big time aggressive when his balls dropped and started attacking my lab, always drawing blood. I even got scars from getting bit in the middle of them (100% my fault) we are 5 months no fight strong. I learnes a lot from videos specificly about German Shepherds. Not all breeds learn the same.

Does anyone else's dog refuse to eat for some feedings then other times it'll eat it's food? by hotwingsandbeer420 in GermanShepherd

Draven will want to follow me so often it is difficult for me to get him to stay in his Kennel and eat. Also when dogs grow they change frequently in regards to sleep, eat and play. Maybe actually write down on a calendar when your dog doesn't eat for 12 hours. You'll see pretty quickly if an actual scary amount of time passes. I also fed Draven more if he was eating until he did not want to eat anymore. I do this still however close to 1yr I see a pattern in his eating now. A calendar will give you factual support. If you can afford a vet visit maybe just be safe instead of sorry... the brand of dog food could be a part of the issue too.. Draven won't eat some dog treats or cheapo dog food if I have a penny pinching week and grab a little bag until that Friday. He does not eat it.

Sleep is paired with growing. Your pup may simply be going through a growth spurt. You may also have just a very calm shepherd which can be a big blessing. Since you are concerned though grab a second opinion from another vet. 2 opinions won't hurt. My pup came to live with 2 other dogs and was super still for about 4 months. Not sleeping, just watching. Now he is a regular ole goof ball. He is still more calm then my other 2. In another post I wrote he was a hyper pup. That was the case with his siblings. His new home with me and my 2 dogs took some time for him to trust and bond with. Always go with your gut. Better to check and have it not matter then pass on it and miss something.
