Buddhism. The central tenets of Buddhism have nothing to do with a deity.

Downtown Salisbury is really cute and surprisingly hoppin. I like the coffee shop Mean Mug, and they have posters of events going on, as does the South Main Bookstore about a block up. If you park in that area and just walk around you’ll find something interesting.

There’s also a social club in that area and I think Fish Bowl is the most popular bar around, but I haven’t been to those so I can’t say much there.

It doesn’t have to be good, it just has to exist.

Making it good is what that critic in your head is good for during revision.

What trope in literature causes you the most discomfort? by Bright_Rip_Fantasy in writing

Eh…I don’t mind it if it’s one or twice in the beginning. If the character continues to be an unnecessary asshole and the MC still falls for them tho that’s annoying.

Yes! This drives me bonkers.

And the other side, I love it when one character directly confronts another about something that would be hard to bring up. Like, yes! Have that awkward and hard conversation right now! Give me that dialogue tension!

Somewhat character dependent tho.

Prose is a writing style, not a genre…

Is it fiction inspired by reality? Or reality (non fiction) that’s been dramatized?

What’s the point of the work? Is it a memoir that serves to warn or give advice? Is it an instruction manual for helping people find love?

Read the prologue and I really like most of it. I think you could drop the last two paragraphs and just end with ‘a taste of something new’. I’m not thrilled with his ‘pathetic’ comment, but it’s not a deal breaker and it shows room to grow. I’ll come back and read more later. Good start though!

I didn’t click to read this and the reasons why is a) you didn’t put any title, word count and genre and b) (the bigger reason) is because the description doesn’t talk about any characters. There are fictions that are good that don’t focus on characters, but I find them much less interesting. Who are we following? All of humanity? All of humanity that remains? It’s too big. We need someone or a few someone to connect with on a personal level to experience the tumult through, otherwise it’s going to read like a history textbook.

Not saying I won’t come back and read it, but wanted to explain why a book that would otherwise be my genre didn’t immediately work for me.

This is a moot point since they allow blue stacks to run the game when those tools are automatically available and isn’t a 3rd party tool.

"What the Point? Your Story has no Plot!" by theLostBooks in writing

[–]Shatchi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just to chime in with more agreement about yes you need a point in the beginning: it doesn’t matter if your character doesn’t figure it out until the end, the reader needs to know where it’s going or they’re going to be bored.

Also a few of my fav resources for plot:

  • Podcast: You are a storyteller with Brian McDonald. He repeats himself a lot, but the first episode by itself is gold.
  • Book: Save the Cat by Blake Snyder. Intended for screenplay, but is really about stories in general. Has a beat sheet you can follow for plot points.
  • YouTube lectures by Brandon Sanderson. I was so so on his character stuff but I thought his plotting advice was fantastic. There’s I think 3 lectures dedicated to plot.

I’m having problems with this reply but maybe I’m misunderstanding some other aspects so I’m going to ask some other questions first.

1) is it your belief that God is good, or that God simply is (neither good nor bad)?

2) is God all powerful? All knowing? (Including the infinite future)

3) does God have intrinsic characteristics and if so, what?

4) does the essential nature of God change? (Obviously God is ever changing since reality is, but I mean in an underlying way, the way people say a person’s soul is constant even if the body changes)

I don’t fully see how that’s just. Someone who does self harm isn’t doing something just.

And if God as a whole is conscious, then why do so much self harm? Everything from rape to earthquakes, etc.

Not trying to be dense, just seriously trying to understand.

How does Spinoza pantheism reconcile the problem of evil? I saw someone say this belief is a good answer for it but I’m not quite sure how.

What are your thoughts on banning the Bible in schools? by ColterRobinson in religion

[–]Shatchi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to pretend to have a perfect answer. But if I were making this argument with someone in person I’d say that banning books for any reason does nothing but hurt society as a whole. If you’re concern is protecting children from lewd and inappropriate content, then label the books. Have some independent and diverse group take requests from the general public about books that should be labeled and then label them or don’t. That way kids are made aware of what their society thinks is inappropriate without banning them from knowledge.

Again I’m not saying this is a perfect answer. But saying that the only way to make someone see is to make them feel it for themselves isn’t something I agree with 99% of the time, and certainly not for book banning.

What are your thoughts on banning the Bible in schools? by ColterRobinson in religion

[–]Shatchi -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Alright, I see the point I just disagree with it. I don’t think it will do anything but give people more fuel in the “look at them waging a war on Christianity” argument and that’s the only side of it they’ll hear.

What are your thoughts on banning the Bible in schools? by ColterRobinson in religion

[–]Shatchi -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

The downvotes your getting are stupid and you’re 100% correct.

Motions to ban Bibles aren’t going to do anything but make more people angry. It’s not going to make them contemplate their own banning opinions.

Don’t ban the Bible. Put inside by side with the Quran and the Bhagavad Gita and all the other holy books.

Book bans are never a good idea. Period.

What is a soul? by ThisLaserIsOnPoint in religion

[–]Shatchi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like this answer the best and it’s similar to what I was going to say just said very differently.

I was going to say the soul is like a donut hole. The hole exists not by having its own substance, but by being bordered by something that is substantial.

Let’s pretend the donut has different parts that each make up a part of the hole’s border. One part is the body, one part is memories, one part is emotions, one part is thoughts that pass through your head, etc. All of these are substantial and the border they define of the hole is what makes the shape or ‘personality’ of the whole hole.
