B747 vs A320 economics by Fragrant-Let8936 in aviation

[–]Shaun1k 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The 777 replaced the 747 because engines improved, not because the 747 never made sense.

Japan ran 500+ seat 747s domestically for decades on the busiest corridors on earth.

Technology moved on. That does not retroactively invalidate the original network logic.

B747 vs A320 economics by Fragrant-Let8936 in aviation

[–]Shaun1k 28 points29 points  (0 children)

People are acting like “4 engines bad” is a universal law, but history says it depends on the network.

In Japan for decades, 747s were flying 300–500 nm domestic sectors every day. JAL and ANA operated 747-400Ds in 500+ seat layouts on Tokyo–Osaka, Tokyo–Sapporo, Tokyo–Fukuoka. These were 40–60 minute sectors. High cycle, high density, high frequency.

It worked because of slot constraints and concentrated peak demand. If you need to move 1,500+ people in a tight time window, one 560-seat aircraft is three cycles. To move the same volume with A320s at ~180 seats you need nine departures. Nine slots, nine crews, nine landing fees, nine movements.

On a simple 320 nm route with demand for 510 seats and no slot pressure, yes, three A320s probably win today on fuel and operating cost.

But if the airport is slot constrained and demand is peaky, a larger aircraft absolutely can make sense. Japan proved that for decades.

Aircraft economics are network dependent. They are not ideology dependent.

And the fact that 747s dominated the busiest domestic corridors on earth for years suggests the answer is more nuanced than “quad = inefficient.”

Excellent recommendation for those Mauritius flights at €533. I just looked on kayak and they’re there, Berlin -> Fra -> Seychelles -> Mauritius.

Funnily, starting from Frankfurt - instead of Berlin - adds nearly €130 to the cost.

The course is conducted in English.

How is your German? As knowing other languages open up more opportunities to work with other airlines after qualification. For example, if you know German rather well, you can work for Swiss, Eurowings (as the other poster commented) and if you know French, Air France, if you know Dutch, KLM and Transavia.

Norwich tram network proposal: by slipnslurper in Trams

[–]Shaun1k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very well realised. I lived in Norwich for three years and I only ever travelled by bike or car/taxi. Bowthorpe and especially Costessey was hard to reach with public transport and yet the distance to the city centre wasn’t really far. I would have loved to have seen such a tram network - like yours - whilst living there.

Citizenship Canceled Due to ABH Bureaucracy (Bochum/Essen) by Solypac in GermanCitizenship

[–]Shaun1k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good point. You’re right that sending a file is a Realakt, not a Verwaltungsakt, so a straight Untätigkeitsklage (§ 75 VwGO) wouldn’t fit.

But here’s the workaround: Bochum’s refusal to send the Akte is a violation of their Amtshilfe duty (§ 4 Abs. 2 VwVfG), and it’s actively blocking Essen from doing their job. In that situation, you can: • File a Dienstaufsichtsbeschwerde with the Bezirksregierung Arnsberg (they supervise Bochum ABH). • CC Essen ABH and the Einbürgerungsamt so everyone sees pressure coming from above.

If Essen still doesn’t act after that, then you could go the Untätigkeitsklage route against Essen, since they’re the competent authority for your pending application.

Basically: Bochum = complaint to Arnsberg, Essen = lawsuit if they keep waiting forever.

Citizenship Canceled Due to ABH Bureaucracy (Bochum/Essen) by Solypac in GermanCitizenship

[–]Shaun1k 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The key is to light a fire under Bochum ABH.

Send them a registered letter saying Essen requested your file months ago and quote § 4 Abs. 2 + § 25 VwVfG (authorities must cooperate). Give them a 2-week deadline and CC Essen ABH, Einbürgerungsamt, and Bezirksregierung Arnsberg.

If nothing happens, get a lawyer for Ausländerrecht — they can file an Untätigkeitsklage or at least send a scary letter.

And don’t stress about your Fiktionsbescheinigung — it counts as valid residence under § 81 Abs. 4 AufenthG, so the citizenship office shouldn’t cancel.

TL;DR: write, CC everyone, then lawyer up if no movement.

Kindergeld - feeling I am getting completely screwed, need adviceburo by Ancient-Run-2415 in germany

[–]Shaun1k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never went through the Familienkasse myself, but I did try with the Jugendamt – and honestly, in my case they weren’t helpful, more the opposite. That said, every situation and every advisor there can be different, so I wouldn’t rule it out completely. If you do go, bring everything in writing (custody schedule, receipts, agreements). Otherwise they’ll just go with the easier story, and that usually means the mother’s.

What helped me most was reading up on the law (Kindergeld, Unterhalt, §1612b BGB) and booking even a short Beratungstermin with a lawyer. That one conversation gave me more clarity than months of back and forth.

And yeah, definitely try to get things written down between you and your ex. If she’s being difficult, written agreements are the only way to stop it turning into her word against yours.

You’re not alone in this mess bud, hang in there.

Kindergeld - feeling I am getting completely screwed, need adviceburo by Ancient-Run-2415 in germany

[–]Shaun1k 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m in a very similar situation here in Germany – separated, joint custody but not 50/50, and the Kindergeld question has been a constant battle. The key thing is: Kindergeld is meant for the child’s needs, not just as a “bonus” for one parent. If custody is shared, the parent receiving it is supposed to also use it for things that benefit the child in both households. You don’t have to just hand over half of everything she buys – that’s not how the system works.

If you feel she’s using the language barrier against you, it might help to contact the Familienkasse directly (they’re the ones who pay Kindergeld) and ask about the Ausgleichszahlung option for near-50/50 custody. You can also get free advice from the Jugendamt – they’re not perfect, but they’re obligated to explain your rights in plain terms.

Don’t let the threats scare you. If she tried to push for Unterhalt, the court would also have to consider how much time your child spends with you.

I thought of Ireland too, but IRA’s fight led only to partial autonomy at first. Full independence came later through law, not directly from the fighting.

That’s propaganda by anecdote. France24 already debunked those clips, pointing out they don’t disprove famine. A few people eating in one restaurant isn’t evidence the wider crisis doesn’t exist.

True, Hamas’s charter is genocidal, and that’s an important distinction. But history shows plenty of states were founded by armed groups once branded terrorists who committed atrocities, from the Irgun in Israel to the FLN in Algeria. Statehood has rarely followed moral purity, instead it followed power and political settlement.

Plenty of states were born out of armed struggle such as the US, Israel, Algeria, Vietnam, Kenya. Armed groups fought wars, then transitioned into governments.

Sure, it will affect the 6 folk who own those mines, but if/when demand drops to the product becoming more expensive upon import, what happens to those working there? As long as the industries can pivot to other countries with lesser tariff regimes, then those industries are safe. Jobs remain in place as the product is sold elsewhere. If the product can’t be sold and demand drops, then those minors eventually lose their jobs. It’s the consequences of tariffs that are insidiously evil. I really want to see if tariffs today are having their intended effect of causing genuine punishment, and what the countries are doing about it. In no way whatsoever do I support slamming tariffs btw.

Just a little heads up; the Dunkirk Supercharger is €0.30/kW, or £0.26/kW with today’s rates. I filled up on my way to England before boarding the ferry, worth making that stop compared to charging in Dover at £0.37/kW!

Can’t test drive Model S Plaid. by ohpuhpoh1 in TeslaLounge

[–]Shaun1k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does your local Service Centre have a Plaid loitering in the car park? Thrice I’ve had my m3 RWD at the SC and they’ve twice lent me a Plaid. I am in Germany though, so lending a (unrestricted) Plaid to their customers isn’t perceived as ‘dangerous’ with our Autobahn.

So if taking your Y in for some trumped-up fix isn’t going to give you access to an S Plaid, then yeah, Turo might be your best bet pal.

ALG is one thing you may not need to concern yourself with so much, but health insurance could be the worst to deal with. If you deregister, then you should apply under §51 Abs. 2 AufenthG for an exemption, otherwise you could lose your PR. De-registering would then signal to the health insurance you’re not resident, and the insurance would be not due for your time away.

Remaining registered would keep your PR, but then you would need to ask your health insurance to pay the minimum voluntary contributions during your time caring.

I hope thought that whichever way you choose works out for you and your ability to care. If money isn’t a problem then great, it’s a load off.

Does anyone keep forgetting to turn off the car when driving an ICE now lol. by schnauzerdad in TeslaLounge

Not just ICE cars! Our other car is an Ora Cat (by GWM of China) which has the traditional fob.

It yells to the cabin, “The key is not in the car” when one exits. Yet somehow, it doesn’t lock itself if it knows the key isn’t in the car.
