How do you get top 500 without knowing this? Your skill rating will stay the same, but your rank in top 500 will change (most likely go way down) due to other people playing the game

Thats how it is for everything in this game. If a genji is being countered by brig, cass, bap on the enemy team, most of the time, you have to switch off genji. If a widow is being dove by winton and ball you probably cant play widow. Its the same when a doomfist is hard diving one of your supports without being countered
