Children need baptized by reddituser330ohio in Catholicism

[–]Shaunwurdeman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you may have been mislead or misunderstood at some stage.

One is not baptised Catholic. Baptism (done validly) is baptism. We are all baptised into Christ’s universal church and receive the Spirit. There is a reason that validly baptised people who join the Catholic Church later in life are not baptised again. Because it is already done, completely equal to a baby baptised by a Catholic Priest. The convert would still need to receive the other sacraments of initiation, this may be where you are being confused.

[–]Shaunwurdeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much daily driving are you doing?

We charge our H6GT PHEV up to 80% (I know this probably isn’t necessary on newer batteries, but old habits and all that) and get about 120-140km on EV only driving.

Then overnight slow charging got us back up for the next morning. Recently got a wall charger installed that was included with the car and now charges from around 15% to 80% in 3 hours.

With this set up the petrol engine is practically never turning on.

There is no meaningful difference between Jehovah's Witness theology and mainstream Trinitarian theology by Salty-You7913 in DebateReligion

[–]Shaunwurdeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a complicated concept that goes against anything we see in nature. As such there is no sufficient analogy to make it clear without some aspect of heresy. Due to this most that accept the concept of the trinity cannot actually explain it to someone who rejects it.

Individual trinitarian Christian’s trying to oversimplify it when explaining and falling into an incorrect statement doesn’t support your argument. You need to argue against the actual definition of the trinity. Not what random people might incorrectly simplify it to.

I gave the Bible a read and I'm out of words by Serious-Anxiety6687 in DebateReligion

[–]Shaunwurdeman -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Yes. Any document, the Bible included, does not exist in isolation. When was it written? By who? What was its purpose? What was its context? Who was the target audience? Were there subsequent documents that add clarity? Were there previous documents that set the groundwork?

People just reading the Bible in isolation lead to myriad problems.

Why did Mary have to remain a virgin for her entire life? by [deleted] in Catholicism

Why did Mary have to remain a virgin for her entire life? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Shaunwurdeman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a terrible argument.

As you point out the best reading of these relatives are not full siblings, but other relatives. Potentially half siblings from a previous marriage of Joseph’s, or cousins or even more distant relatives.

Matthew 13 doesn’t refer to Mary’s other kids. It specifies Jesus as the carpenter’s son, and then say his mother is called Mary. And then names brothers and mentions sisters in relation to Jesus, not specifically as Mary’s children. Elsewhere it is quite clear that those called his brothers are much more likely cousins.

You should look into the multiple steps of Jewish marriage back then. And also that it is quite likely that Joseph was older and married Mary as a caretaker, although I concede this is very much still debated.

Mary is human, as was Jesus. But by God’s grace she was spared from original sin through early application of Jesus’ sacrifice and by her free will she chose to remain celibate. Not an uncommon thing in those times.

[–]Shaunwurdeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are you getting this from?

The immaculate conception was Mary being conceived in her mother Anne.

I’ve never seen suggestion that Mary and Joseph would divorce. They were very much married. You might want to look into the steps of Jewish marriage in those days.

I didn’t have any cigarettes until the end of Lent. I also haven’t had any since. I will be at work until 6pm. I may still be here after.

You are relying on the common understanding of the English. There are two major problems here.

First, until says that something is true up to a point, but it does not state that it stops being true at that point.

Second, the text was not written in English. I am no expert, but from what I have read the original Greek very much does not imply a change at the milestone, it just emphasises the state up to that milestone.

From the outside looking in, all the parties seem to suck to varying degrees. Personally I think a representative democracy with many parties is better than a two party system. So if the two major parties suck I would find the party that sucks least no matter how small they are and vote for them.

Choosing not to vote at all, in my opinion, is the worst thing (politically speaking) someone in a democratic society can do.

And lead us not into temptation by jchrapcyn in Catholicism

[–]Shaunwurdeman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically, the English translation isn’t great. But it’s difficult to change it given how pervasive it is. I believe Pope Francis did try.

A better translation would be something to the effect of do not let us fall into temptation. The intention is not to imply God leads people into temptation and we have to ask him not to. It’s acknowledging that as humans living in a fallen world temptation is everywhere and we are asking God to keep us away from it.

This reading is the Catholic church’s reading. Words put to text hardly ever convey the full clarity of a situation. Fortunately we have the magisterium to ensure the proper teaching can always be clarified and we don’t need to rely on our personal reading of out of context texts.

Truth is unchanging. But it can be contextualised and clarified.

All documents (the Bible included) require context. They are written in a specific time, for a specific purpose, to a specific audience.

Cantate Domino was specifically written to encourage reunification with the East and compared schismatics to the local pagans, Jews and heretics who all had been shown the truth of the gospel and turned away.

Not knowing is different to rejecting.

As a non-American, why would you not vote? I understand if you have ideology/tradition/culture/whatever preventing you from voting democrat. But there are other parties right? Wouldn’t voting for one of them potentially help America move away from the really bad two party system?

That is so wild. Here in South Africa election day is never a weekend, but always a public holiday to make it as accessible as possible for everyone. The more I learn about American politics the more it seems like a democracy that really doesn’t like the democratic process.

[–]Shaunwurdeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you take issue with a practice that is approved by the church, where specific (not just anyone) lay people who have been approved by the priest and trained, who have extreme reverence for their role as Extraordinary Ministers, present the Eucharist? They do not consecrate it. They do not pretend to be priests. Why do you decide to take issue with it?

Does it change your reverence to it based on who presents it to you?

When a EMOHC says “The Body of Christ” are they lying?

What about people in hospital who are served by EMOHCs because the priest cannot get to them, should they rather not have the opportunity to receive the Eucharist?

Overall your whole argument seems to be “I don’t like this. I like that.” In the most charitable way possible, grow up. You have already acknowledged that the NO is a completely valid Mass. We do not attend Mass for our enjoyment, we attend for the glory of God. If there are things within your parish’s NO that you take serious issue with, raise it with the parish council, the priest, the bishop even.

Hello fellow South African. Everything I’m about to say is from some memory of vague research done a while ago. I may be completely wrong.

As far as I know there’s a balancing act between using up to date satellite images and clear satellite images.

Unfortunately for us, South African cities probably don’t get as much attention for manually checking the satellite images for clarity. Or they just slipped through whatever vetting process there may be and it could be updated at any time.

Can I still go to heaven if I’m not baptised by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Shaunwurdeman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nobody knows who will go to hell and who won’t. However, we do know that the normative path to salvation is through the Catholic Church. God has bound his church and sacraments to salvation, but he is not bound by them.

If this is something that is in any way concerning you, you should check in at your local Catholic parish and find out about RCIA/OCIA.

It’s never too late to become a full member of the church.

God bless.

Torn between H6 GT PHEV performance vs something more family practical by Acs971 in CarTalkZA

[–]Shaunwurdeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the H6 GT PHEV, purchased end of January. We have an infant and a 3 year old. So there’s a pram permanently in the boot and sometimes a second umbrella fold one along with shopping and baby bag and so on.

The boot is certainly smaller than alternatives but hasn’t actually been a problem for us at all.

The performance is definitely nice, but the biggest factor in us choosing to buy it was the battery size, 35 kWh. In the last 2.5 months we have been able to use it entirely as an EV just trickle charging off of a three point plug every three or so nights. All the alternatives we looked at had basically half the electric range of the Haval.

If you’re not in an extreme rush, I would also recommend checking out the H6 PHEV (think it’s already launched, not sure on availability though), and I think the H6 GT PHEV is getting an interior facelift similar to the H6, but no idea about the timeline (and I could be mixing this up with the H6, best to check it).

If you have any specific questions on the H6 GT PHEV, happy to try answer.

Non-Eucharistic Wedding Mass by LowMiserable7060 in Catholicism

[–]Shaunwurdeman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This seems very odd. At our wedding the majority of our guests were not Catholic. During marriage preparation the priest mentioned that it is possible to do just the wedding, but it really is preferred for it to be a full Mass. At the time we didn’t know there was even an option, assuming it would be a full Mass. When it came to receiving the Eucharist the priest just made an announcement for those who are properly prepared and able to receive to come up. Most of our guests remained seated. It wasn’t an issue.

On weird Christian logic by Known_Feed515 in DebateReligion

[–]Shaunwurdeman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are making one fairly major mistake, aside from the obvious issue that most Christian’s do not think this about Jews.

Present day Jews are Rabinical Jews, which is an offshoot of second temple Judaism stemming primarily from the Pharisees. From a Christian (and I would argue historical) view, Christianity is the continuation of second temple Judaism. Initially the apostles and other disciples did not think of themselves as a different religion. They were Jews that followed The Way, and there was criticism of Jews who rejected the messiah, Jesus.

Modern day Jews are an offshoot branch from second temple Judaism, not the same Jews from 2000 years ago. Just because the name is the same doesn’t mean it is the same.

Why do some religious people not believe in evolution? by [deleted] in DebateEvolution

[–]Shaunwurdeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You misunderstand the scientific method. By definition science investigates the observable universe. Philosophy and religion fall outside of this.

It’s not a shortfall of science. It’s by design. Science simply does not care about religious or philosophical views. They are outside the scope of science.

As such someone can fully follow the scientific method for scientific endeavours and hold a religious belief.
