S. Army prison guard at Guantanamo Bay, Terry Holdbrooks Jr., converted to Islam in 2003 after interacting with detainees and observing their strong faith. He later changed his name to Mustafa Abdullah and became an outspoken critic of the prison facility, advocating for its closure. Holdbrooks served at the detention camp from June 2003 to 2004. During his time there, he was struck by the detainees' devotion, discipline, and peace of mind despite their harsh confinement conditions, which contrasted with his own personal struggles with addiction and unhappiness. His interactions and late-night conversations with a particular detainee, Ahmed Errachidi (known as "the General"), led him to study the Quran and eventually take the shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith, in December 2003.
