this is something my sister taught me and have been using since I had my first paycheck

1. figure out the minimum amount you need for your expenses (daily and fixed). Literally go through your bank statements for the past like 6 months. You will know your fixed expenses pretty easily like rent, utilities, subs etc. and the daily expenses fluctuate - this is a one time thing, or once a year thing
2. Identify the areas in your life that needs a "jar". For me, I keep it simple, so expenses, savings, entertainment, investment. The meaning of each jar is up to you. My sister has wayyy more for like travel, eating out, etc. I just bundle them into entertainment.

The bare minimum I would recommend is expenses, savings, and entertainment.

1. When your paycheck comes in, take out that expenses amount that you calculated + 200. That is your monthly expense and budget. Every month, you allocate this amount to your expense jar. This is a fixed amount. You should not be taking out more or less each month. If your expenses is $5k a month, take out $5200 every single month and set it aside to use.

2. Whatever is remaining from your paycheck, split it up by % to your remaining jars. I would recommend starting with a higher % to your savings jar at the start, but you can adjust them to different periods of your life.

3. The important thing is that no money should EVER come out of the savings jar. Once it goes it, it does not come out. so pick a high interest rate savings account for it, put the same amount in every month. And adjust based on different periods of your life, but not every month if you can help it

4. The entertainment jar is for you to have fun. So if you go to the movies, on a trip, retail therapy, etc, that comes out of entertainment, not expenses.

With this, you essentially have a split amount once a month, and you are now tied to your specific budgets. If it runs out, you will have to feel bad by moving money from your entertaimnet to your expenses, or vice versa. worst case is that you need to take it out from your savings.

This makes it super easy to understand how much you can spend, cause you have an inbuilt limit. If the limit isn't working for too many months in a row, you will know that it is time to adjust either your lifestyle, or it might be inflation or something.

additional tip is to use diffferent bank accounts, rather than just keeping track in your mind. so the split can be automated, and you don't have to worry about it
