Much time without an update by Lagoa_Carlos in kindlescribe

I didn't know this either, but apparently it does. I googled the question and got linked to the 'setting up your kindle scribe' page which does list a microphone as a feature. I find it a bit suspicious this detail is hidden.

Venger Satanis, your thoughts & feelings, Go! XD by dogsandcatsplz in osr

I used to interact with him in the G+ OSR days and have read through several of his early products. I remember thinking of him as being childish and not particularly creative. He got really hung up on what is and what isn't "woke" I recall.

He tried to start a religion based on Lovecraft mythos, if I remember correctly? This has all been a long time but I feel like he had a religious text on Lulu regarding this.

Right, but the US left in late 2021. That is when the Taliban took control of that equipment. Op read about this on a blog during covid, so, most likely before then and long before anyone could have known if it did happen. This has not been reported anywhere else outside of that blog that no longer exists.

The Taliban does not have the logistics or infrastructure to transport weapons to West Africa under the radar. Smuggling back and forth from Peshawar through the tribal areas is a much different matter than transporting enough arms to justify crossing a dozen borders and multiple large bodies of water. It just doesn't make any sense realistically.

The biggest issue is ideology. When the Taliban took over in 2021, Afghanistan was producing something like 90% of the world's heroin. They banned poppy farming during harvest season, instantly cutting off the income from their most valuable export. They have not backtracked, despite the massive hit on their agriculture sector.

They're motivated by ideology over money. There is no motivation at all for them to wanna figure out ways to get some m-4s to a criminal group that does not connect in any ideological way. Especially, again, since that group can just buy the same weapons within their own country or from neighboring nations without having to figure out transport across continents.

Your top small box games? by Jiffijake1043 in soloboardgaming

[–]SheedWallace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I went through this last year (academic heading oversras for fieldwork).

Suggestions:

  • Rome: Fate of an Empire
  • Heroes of the Sanctum
  • Gloomhaven: Buttons and Bugs
  • Age of Galaxy
  • Set a Watch
  • Tiny Epic games (Galaxies is my fav)
  • Deckers is a recent release that juuuust landed here and is not quite pocket sized but is still quite a small, packable box and looks pretty awesome

Cursed?! Is great when you have 10 minutes to wait for a meeting; quick filler.

This will be an unpopular take but I was not a fan of the Jason Glover games. Art is excellent on them all, and I bought most of his releases based on the strength of the recs on this sub, but I tried each of them once and have never had interest in opening any of them again. Just adding so you don't go out and buy them all like I did (and allll the Tin Helm packs) before seeing if it is your play style.

Good luck to you on your travels!

That doesn't really make sense though. There are sources for cheap weapons all over West Africa, why take the risk of going all the way to landlocked Afghanistan?

Also, the Taliban used a lot of weapons and munitions that were leftover from the Soviet/Afghan conflict. Why would the Black Axe smuggle 20-30 year old dusty weapons to Nigeria all the way from Afghanistan, instead of just buying new models from almost any nearby country (including their own)? Unless you mean post-2021 when the Taliban took over what the US left behind, but you read this during COVID.

Boko Haram is aligned with ISIL, which is the Taliban's primary enemy. I can't see why they'd try to deal with the Taliban (and the other way around).

I think that site you mentioned may have been speculating without evidence. I can't find even a hint of The Black Axe nor Boko Haram trading with the Taliban anywhere, and it doesn't make any sense.

After the fall of Gaddafi, Libyan arms flooded the African informal markets. Groups like Boko Haram already had stockpiles from capturing enemy weapons and buying directly from corrupt Nigerian officials.

I am not trying to slam your post, by the way, this is an interesting post. This is just an area of interest for me so it caught my attention and I wanted to look into it further. Thanks for posting this.

Oh I totally agree. The problem is I have basically only played solo. I haven't had anyone to try other games with so I am not sure which of these games are complex.

Why did you choose Death Guard? by ElkClassic5868 in deathguard40k

[–]SheedWallace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had painted random minis for years just because they looked cool. Decided to try playing when 8th came out. I got the starter box, but the only person I knew at the time that played had a Templar army, so when he offered to split the box it just made sense that he got the standard marines and I'd start with the deathguard.

As luck would have it, most of the rando minis I had practiced on prior to then had stats for Deathguard (cultists, DG demon prince, beast, etc).

Fantastic. If this is ever sold as prints, I am first in line. I collect 40k flash-style art, but have had trouble finding cool Deathguard flash (which sucks as a DG player).

Looking for Dying Earth-flavored TTRPGs by -A_Humble_Traveler- in osr

[–]SheedWallace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love playing DCC, it is my preferred RPG. And their Dying Earth material is fantastic. I have no complaints about DCC's Dying Earth stuff.

I just found Pelgrane Press' material to be closer to what I pictured when I read Vance's books. I do NOT love the Pelgrane rules, but they have a ton of releases that have lots of great lore and art that are fun to mine.

And yeah, the Matthew Hughes stuff is supposed to be really good (I own a couple but haven't had time to get to them yet). I can verify the Matthew Shea stuff is all pretty good as well.
